Also scarlett johansson :> Then go watch GitS. Why would you wait for an adaption of it instead of watching the classic masterpiece of a movie and series? I watched about a few minutes of one of the movies and didn't really get into it =\ So thinking the movie will get me to like the anime.

The movie will most likely be an action flick which GitS isn't. So don't know how that will help.

The biggest difference between them is that Attenbrough doesn't really exist in the Novels. Hes been mentioned like... once as existing and is part of the Yang Fleet, and thats really it. Part 1 has some side story novels stuck into it (a lot of the Noble Court Plots and such), but otherwise nothing major is different. I feel like the anime did the capture of Iserlohn better, but the novel did Kircheis' suppression of the Kastrop Rebellion better.
Kastrop's rebellion felt a little out of place in the OVA's so that's good news. + Show Spoiler [LotGH] +It was like the only purpose of that episode was to showcase the artemis necklace, the explosive particles and Kircheis being a competent leader. The whole space romans stuff also probably feels less jarring in written form rather than animated.
I heard that Dusty was irrelevant in the novels but didn't believe it until now. He's a pretty fun side character so props to the directors considering how often anime-original characters, without diverting from the source plot, can ruin a show.
|
The biggest bonus to the Kastrop Rebellion in the novels is that no magic exploding particles are involved, its all tactics. The biggest negative about the capture of Iserlohn is that it was a hell of a lot simpler, with no future axe fighting massacres involved.
|
So in an ideal world we get Kastrop Rebellion from the novels but Iserlohn capture from the anime. Sounds good to me. Attenbrough is a really fun side character as well.
How would you feel if they did a remake but changed how the women are treated/used? Everything else left largely the same?
|
What do you mean? Given the oppressive government and "style" of the Goldenbaum Dynasty, I don't think the treatment of women there should change. They are supposed to be a backwards, oppressive dictatorship. As far as the Alliance goes, I don't really see a problem with how LOGH treats them. The only change I could see would be... more female characters? IDK, increasing the number of female characters for the sake of it seems pointless to me.
|
What do you mean? I think the woman are generally used kind of well, especially compared to the general anime fare... Fanservice would be a big no-no for me. Or are you talking about making Attenbrough a woman a la Yamato-remake?
I guess I should get into the novels someday...

LOGH+Fanservice.... Miragee, you are a genius! Imagine a mixture between LOGH and something like Keijo. It would be the greatest thing ever created
|
I'm picking up the novels when they're all out.

Rofl :D
It would probably be the greatest nightmare ever created though. Like, I would be an insane roller coaster of ups and downs, from pure brilliance to utter shit. My 6th sense tells me I wouldn't survive, my heart would just burst.

For a man who dislikes fanservice you have amazing ideas!
I mean in general the writing of the female characters were a bit loose. They tended to be merely there to facilitate more than be full characters themselves. Hilde we got more snippets of than most which was nice but even she was kind of hamstrung as a character. I don't think the societies views on women changing would impact the feeling of the oppressive government. Don't have to have strict gender roles to do that.
Were there even female soldiers outside of Yang's Wife(I forget her name )? Even if you can make a case for the Empire(a mostly strong one) having strict definitions it just seems strange that the Alliance side didn't have more full female characters. Sure we got that one college girl that was into Yang that lasted all of 3 eps until she like most female characters was merely used as a tragedy point to drive plot. I think it wasn't so much the setting of the story that influenced this but the time period it was written in. Changing it a little would only add more value if done well in my mind.

So believe in your own wonderful ideas!
edit: Oh I forgot about that pilot girl who comes right at the end and is immediately used as a love interest lol. She was fun character, pity about the use.

I watched the GiTS trailer a couple more times and every time I did I thought "they have already ruined this". Unless the trailer is deceptive to what the plot actually is going to be they have changed the central theme to "evil corporation exploits and lies to main character".

Frederika was generally portrayed as one of the most level headed, competent, and insightful people in the Yang Fleet. Cazellnu's wife, while a housewife, was also portrayed as extremely clever and competent. Jessica Edwards was an extremely strong and sympathetic female character for the time she was there. Katerose never really rose to prominence, but I hardly think being a love interest is demeaning or anything. Even amongst the side characters, one main of the High Council Representatives was a woman (she was the one who spearheaded the Council's push to invade the Empire).
Outside of including a strong, independent black woman who don't need no man. And as far as "tragedy points" go, considering how many character deaths are in the show, named women in the show have a vastly higher survival rate compared to men in the show anyway.

And as far as "tragedy points" go, considering how many character deaths are in the show, named women in the show have a vastly higher survival rate compared to men in the show anyway. I mean listing off traits given to a character doesn't make them a full character. Cazellnu's wife was mainly used as a "characters going through emotional time, need motherly figure". That's all fine and good for a story, you need characters like that at times. Issues is when there's an abundance of those kind of characters.
The reason I mentioned love interest is because traditionally(or at least in abundance) women in literature typically fall into two roles, love interests or tragedy points to drive the protagonist forward. These kind of characters sometimes get their own little stories but typically it's second fiddle to the needs of their interest. In her case I felt there was a lot more I could see with this character, wanted to spend more time knowing them as a character and not just her relationships. She was mainly used as stimulus for the young dude(What's his name?) and her father. Sure she did have her own character points and issues but they never felt like focal points of the character. Frederika was similar. She always felt like a bouncing board for Yang. An anchor if you will. Whenever he needed a pillar she was there. Which again is fine for a character in isolation. She mirrored Hilde in that way but Hilde you got to get more into her own ambitions and character.
It's unfair to just dismiss this with a meme. The biggest issue I had with LoGT was the female writing. It never sat well throughout the entire story even though I loved it. Wonder if 3-gatsu has just made this feeling grow for me lately.

So you aren't talking with how the series treats female characters, because it treats them well, with dignity and respect. You just want them more prominent, which is something entirely different. And ultimately I don't really care one way or another if they were more prominent. Characters in LOGH for the most part aren't tied to their gentials, so it doesn't matter if they are all male or all female (at least where it makes sense, aka not the Empire). The only way to make me actually care is if they were going the fanservice route, in which case I'd be 110% on-board and supportive.

Euphonium S2 EP7: + Show Spoiler +Geez. From one drama to the next one. Still a good episode though. But much focus on the drama.

All this talk about the remake & fanservice reminds me of this joke picture someone edited for a "modernized" LotGH.
