I guess it helps that ponytail guy is one of the few characters in the show I actually like. The story has major issues with tone. One moment we get fanservice and Fine/Izetta doing whatever sol stuff in the town, and the next we have Izetta slaughtering entire squadrons. It's not impossible to have both, but the way they're going about it is pretty dissonant when you consider what sort of mood they're trying to set.
It just seemed....unnecessary? + Show Spoiler +We get all this gushy stuff about how they are the good country with wonderful people then he just straight up executes a guy who overheard a conversation (his fuck up btw, talking about such a secret in the open like that). With all the people they have who already know her secret (like the entire royal guard lol) They could have just removed him from the front lines or even thrown him to work at the palace for the duration of the war. Just seemed pretty artificial.
I agree with the tone though, and that is part that separates good from bad stories. It also is related to the earlier Keijo discussion. Imo anime has a problem where they feel the need to insert it into stories that don't need it or they overdose on it. Of course not every anime has this problem (excluding the ones where part of the main selling points is fan service) but I do feel like its over saturated and too many studios feel the need to throw it in when it isn't necessary.

I did, surely. But I'm still a bit confused about what I actually saw. It seemed full of "random" stuff (for example some backgrounds) that screamed "we're having lots of laugh doing this, hope you too" even when the history was mostly grim, dark and violent. Because of that I'm not sure if that was more of a serious piece, a bloody "parody" or some sort of "danger ahead" kind of piece. Still, weird, enjoyable and wild at times (Ooba, dafuq you actually were). Actually I might be overthinking this Hm, I thought it was a pretty serious piece that got quite weird in the end. It's kind of like Masaaki Yuasa's take at Satoshi Kon's style. I think the ending was ok but a bit weak compared to the rest because it wasn't really in line from a directoral perspective. Looking at his other works, he has a very striking, eccentric and often weird direction and animation-direction style. However, it's pretty consistent throughout a show. For Kemonozume that wasn't true, it was pretty Kon-esque, hence my reference, and I don't think it worked too well. It was still a good ending it's just that it felt weak to me compared to the supreme direction earlier on. You can put those thought in words better than I can. Also felt the ending was different and not exactly coherent with previous episodes. But I had this feeling that things were only getting weirder and weirder, so the way the ending played could be exactly what was supposed to be. A bit like "hey, don't get too serious about this". I wonder what happened to + Show Spoiler +flesh eaters. Yuka was the only one left? What happened to society after Ooba's medicine killed a bunch and made monsters of others? And most important: why they could make sex before early on but not later? I know I'm nitpicking but seriously, how + Show Spoiler +I'm not really sure on the details anymore as I watched it quite a while ago. I don't really remember the whole sex thing clearly. Are you talking about sex vs actual reproduction or about the fact that she couldn't control herself later on?
About the society, I'm even less sure. I would have to rewatch it to make concrete statements instead of wild assumptions. I will rewatch the show eventually but I don't know if now is the time I want to do that.^^ Will decide that in the next few days. + Show Spoiler +In terms of reproduction then it is stated that human + flesh eater = flesh eater baby. What I was curious is that later on when they try to have sex Yuka gets too excited and transforms, making it impossible - while early on they don't have this problem at all. Tell me I'm way overthinking :D Still solid 7/10 from me. But would not watch again I guess, once you know how the story goes and who dies/lives there isn't much of re-watch-ability. Because damn me if I'd come back because of art style.
Yeah, knowing the ending obviously takes away from it. But I think it's worse for other shows. In this instance, you can focus more on details and I think the show has a lot of them. Back then, when watching it for the first time, I actually enjoyed the direction more than the actual story. This, and the animation, makes me quite confident that I would also enjoy it a second time around.
On November 12 2016 09:48 Spazer wrote: Yuri on Ice is weird. I feel like the pacing is way too fast. Half the point of a sports anime is to see a character grow and develop as the series progresses. Yuri lands the quad in the short program no problem when he's historically had issues with them, but we never actually see what caused the difference. Am I supposed to assume that Yuri's problems are 100% mindset or something? Because as far as sports anime developments go... that's pretty lame. Also, while I don't particularly mind the BL stuff in the show, sometimes they take it way too far. Case in point: the Swiss guy in ep 6. His behavior during the short program basically made me roll my eyes.
I agree with the pacing. I think they are trying to move all the way to the Grand Prix within 12 episodes which is impossible to do without upping the pace to 11.

I remember when you first watched it you said it was decent but didn't understand why people are gushing over it.^^ I'm 20 episodes into s2 and it's finally getting decent. I still think s2 is a lot worse than s1. I hope s3 is as good as you say it is.

Been a while since I watched the other seasons, but I'm pretty sure S3 is the best so far.
Bungou Stray Dogs S2 keeps being quite good as well. Pretty exciting episode which felt like it was over too quickly.+ Show Spoiler +Lots of strong abilities/characters battling in this episode, especially the boss of the Guild and the Q intrigue me. Dazai was pretty shocked when he heard about the later, I think he has a long past with him. I'm excited to see how the three way battle between the Guild, Agency and Port Mafia ends.

If season 3 keeps being this good it'll probably be a 9/10 for me.

I don't know man. Season 2 is incredibly predictable. They go way over-the-top with flashbacks for unimportant characters. Like, I don't want to watch 5 minutes of a random character eating pudding in his room before he recieves an important serve. They are also still rehashing a lot of animation from s1. It's fine doing that a season long when they are still adding new stuff. But seeing the same animation, just with a different character model, for the 100s time is getting boring. Also, nobody is bringing up how the other teams are dealing with the new freak quick so easily. It was a huge deal in s1. They spent 10 episodes or so on refining it to make it a lot better and now suddenly it's like they are doing it a single time and the opponents are figuring an easy way out to conter it. And don't mention the insane amount of serves both teams keep messing up to close the gap in scores without having the author coming up with a new strategy to do so instead. The current match is better and it's probably lasting for the rest of s2.

I mean i disagree with most of your points The flashbacks didn't bother me, sure animation rehash is meh but it overall didn't take much from my enjoyment of the show as the animation atleast looks good, they're also playing against some of the best teams in the country for most of season 2 like at the training camp and they're especially playing against very adaptive teams like Nekoma which is why their quick is not quite as impactful but it's still without a doubt one of their ace moves that scores a lot of points, and i don't remember being annoyed at all by teams messing up serves. I mean i remember the dude who tried learning a floating serve messing up a lot but that's about it.
To me season 2 was far more enjoyable, and i already loved season 1. You're free to feel differently about it.

Sure those people do exist and I also have those tendencies for certain things (doesn't stop it from being stupid in the real world) but seeing that all the time is something that annoys me quite a bit in anime.
I can look at her and believe that there's tons of people like that out there, for better or worse. Especially if you want to make it as an entertainer on TV/Radio/whatever you probably need a good portion of narcissism.
Unrelated, I really liked this weeks 3-gatsu no Lion. I was a bit spoilered earlier when I read someone elses spoiler that + Show Spoiler [apparently actual spoiler] + but I can certainly see that now. Good episode through and through and after watching Fune wo Amu's most recent episode yesterday the contrast in OPs is just so extreme. I really like the one from 3-gatsu no Lion, both from a visual and musical pov whereas fune wo amu's OP just seems so immensely unfitting. I like the show otherwise but please, who thought that was a good intro for the show

Sure, I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy s2 more than s1, lol.
During the training camp they were still trying to figure out how to do the quick. It wasn't polished so they kept messing up etc. so I think this is perfectly fine. However, as soon as the prelims started I thought they would make a huge deal of showing how the different teams tried to deal with it. That was rather disappointing for me since they used up 10 episodes on practicing that move, among a few other things. Messing up serves happened a lot during the prelims, especially by star servers like Kageyama, Oikawa, Asahi and basically everyone who did jump serves. The floating serve guy was well handled. He probably made the most believable progress in s2 and I liked that a lot.

I have an exam on monday but my internet went out so I randomly started watching SnK again to procrastinate. Forget how utterly boring most of the show is. Really a masterclass of how to make your high moments as high as possible. That combination of the glorious soundtrack with great visuals really does so much. I think if most people that loved SnK go watch it again now they'll think way less of it. Reminds me a lot of Halo 3 in a way. Rather mediocre game but my god was that soundtrack so amazing. It just makes even the most dull moments feel incredible. It's a shame that the writing is so bad since the setting does contain interesting stuff.
To any manga readers out there I have a question+ Show Spoiler +So Eren sees the future in the very first episode. Is that part of the story or just some screenwriter trick?
edit: dam watching 3-gatsu after this is just... Ep 5 was so depressing. Feel so shit for everyone involved, well except his aunt. This kind of shit is why I hate the logic that "blood" is important. If you're an asshole then you're lower than a stranger. Don't deserve anything just because share blood.
Also once again parents in anime being shit.
edit2: 3-gatsu ep 6. Man this show is just so depressingly beautiful.
|
Yeah Numy, I never got the whole notion that "blood"/being related is somehow important. Either people are nice and deserve to be loved or they are assholes and can eat shit (drastically speaking, obviously it's not as black and white...).
I will probably rewatch SnK next year when the second season is close to the finish line. Will see how your statement holds true then.
+ Show Spoiler [3-gatsu ep6] +Did I miss something or when did Rei start losing? Are they talking about the past? Or did they make a time-skip from last episode? I'm a little confused right now...

After all, surely the princess would've wanted his life to be spared and so would Izetta.
Latest episode was somewhat silly. Nothing can top her lifting tanks and firing guns while riding on them so this whole dodging fire and taking down a carrier wasn't as impressive. Also, wish they focus on making the anime a darker one than it currently is.

The story just didn't show the matches. Some time has passed since he played his fat buddy and now most likely. He's been stagnating for awhile now as well. If he didn't have Akari, her family and his fat buddy then there'd be no impetus for him anyway. We've seen him as a person but now I guess the story is showing that it's not just his emotions/person that is suffering, his Shogi is as well.
Earlier in I think ep 2 he spoke about how he drowned himself in Shogi just so he could survive and now we see more into that reason. He's survived so what is Shogi to him now?
