And then when it came down to it, the only part towards the end that really delivered for me was the final episode. + Show Spoiler + Additionally I thought the Chou Ginga Gurren Lagann and the Arc Gurren Lagann were both criminally underused in the last part. You know there's an issue when the Space King Kittan gets to do cooler things than both those two robots combined. I mean i agree that + Show Spoiler + Chou ginga gurren lagann should've been used more as its design was fucking awesome, but ultimately it just pales before how fucking awesome TTGL and everything leading up to it was. It's not that the last 5 episodes were flawless but they entertained me the most and were by far the most hype. Also you're thinking of the 40% meme, and i'm still not sure if it was true.

My recent watch of Twintails for example. You could see it's a full-on parody but the scenes were often the same because other anime are doing this shit on the same level of ridiculousness while being serious. Anime is just like that nowadays. Extremely self-referential to the point where the parody becomes the precise thing that it is parodying. Some of it is okay in small doses, but I'm not a fan of the whole "hey we're making fun of the industry" or "hey this is basically some overdone trope done in a different/subversive way" stories.

Hmm I remember not liking much from eps 1-6 because it feels just like rando filler for most of it same with eps 7-12 (though there's a bit more to like. But also, DEPRESSION) then 13-18 is kinda where things start picking up and getting hype? Then 18-24 being hype-tastic?

Its possible the 40% meme wasn't true, but the hype at the time was still there about the last 4 episodes, when it turned out it was really only the last 1 + Show Spoiler + The TTGL itself was cool and all (I can't say the same thing about STTGL, but TTGL was legit), but when they reached the size they did, it also felt they lost their sense of scale and weight, with the exception of one scene (where Earth is seeing the battle in the sky). It tried to make things seem real big with celestial bodies around, and while the battle was cool, it didn't sell me on being a galactic-scale fight, for the most part. But on the other hand, the lack of a lot of things to give you a proper sense of scale in the end helps make things like this feel right at home: + Show Spoiler + In case the hilarity of this is lost, the Scopedog is from VOTOMs, and its like 4 meters tall The first part of the show felt like a really great combination between cool super robot stuff, and put in a gritty way. Not to mention Kamina's charisma was something I couldn't deny. Then the war against the Beastmen in the 2nd part was cool, and episode 15 was probably the single highest moment of the series for me. The part when the reinforcements came, Gurren Lagann standing atop the Daigurren in the Gunbuster Pose while that insert played, going off into the sky for the final battle was just so cool. Part 3 almost went out of its way to try and make the viewer mad, with how much of an ass Rossiu was being. Part 4 had a lot of promise, but I've already talked about my thoughts there.

Rossiu apparently learned nothing from his childhood and the mob randomly turning on Simon in a big 180. I know the mob is always fickle but not that fickle and dumb. The problem is that rossiu works on real world logic while the series clearly operated on very little logic at all. In a real life scenario his actions might possibly have made sense, but in-universe he just comes off as an absolute idiot.

Sounds like it's worth the watch? Its really fun. Did you like KLK? I think most of the same group did Gurren Lagann. It seems like its a glorious celebration of certain elements of anime with over the top fun and epic stuff.

It's not really anything new or revolutionary on its own and it draws heavily on past works both for plot, premise and whatnot. But it manages to be incredibly fun and entertaining and the glorious animation definitely helps.

If I were Kittan when I saw Kinon coming out of that cock pit and Simon flying away for execution I would have put a gun to Rossiu's head and pulled the trigger. Also what is it with anime that when someone says "you know nothing about X" that always puts a person in their place and stops an argument? Kittan should have continued kicking up a fuss.

Actually, it's rather hard for me to call girlish number a parody. It's not really subverting anything or playing around with the viewer's expectation. It just focuses on one aspect of the industry (seiyuu and light novel-based anime) then pretty much plays it straight. It's like shirobako but replace the optimistic atmosphere with an eccentric one and the happy go lucky MC with a snarky one. I don't think the show is fully cynical either. The main point the writer of the show wants to stress in the first 3 episodes was simply that the industry was weird but neither bad or good.
