Don't play the pronoun game dammit!
Kanbaru is an interesting case. She kind of embodies the feelings of a teenage girl in an unrequited love situation. She's idolized Hitagi for many years. I don't doubt that she's spent countless nights imagining their lives together, their wedding day, their little children running around the house, growing old together, having the grandchildren visit etc. Then she got so deeply hurt when she was unable to help this person she loves so dearly and gets pushed further away from him. Que in Koyomi. This guys comes out of nowhere, manages to do what Kanbaru could never do and now this cold hitagi is in love with him while slowly starting to become a more whole person. At first Kanbaru thinks how wonderful this all is and now maybe her dreams will come to be but as time goes on there's that festering that it'll never happen. That small dark thought that this Koyomi guy has stolen the love of her life from her. Now she's in turmoil. She wants to be happy for Hitagi but at the same time this thought keeps building. It turns to envy then to anger at Koyomi but she's conflicted because he did help save Hitagi. This conflict inside herself keeps eating away. Normally a girl/guy will just sit with these feelings until they learn to deal with them but in Kanbaru's case she has the devils paw which makes her avoid dealing with her own feelings and instead use it to lash out. At this point she isn't rational, her emotions have taken over and she doesn't think how her actions will hurt Hitagi. All she thinks about is removing this object of her envy/anger/wrath.
I'm not sure if you finished the arc so I won't say more. You have to understand where she's coming from. I'm sure there's guys in this thread or that you know that have had to deal with this kind of situation before. It's perfectly normal reaction. You don't want to hate that guy but you can't help yourself. Don't be too harsh on the poor girl.
If you talking about Hitagi then I have no idea what is going on and you have to explain your post

He wasn't talking about Hitagi, but is that implying she does not hurt Araragi at times?

Yes, I was talking about Kanbaru. Sorry for that, looking back, my statement is one hell of a mess.
+ Show Spoiler +I think you put it together quite perfectly and I realised almost all of that. The only thing I didn't realise, which I thought is an interesting aspect, is the fact that she didn't learn to deal with her feelings because of her paw. That's something I didn't consider and I might forgive her because of that. What "disgusted" me was that she didn't only use her paw in the fight against Araragi. She used her other appendages as well, much to the surprise of Araragi. This was a part she could have controlled if she had the willpower to do so.
I agree that you can't control your emotions in that particular situation. However, I think you can control them passively, at least partly, by deliberating on your own actions/situation beforehand. I was in kind of a similar situation at least once before, where the girl I loved and turned me down confessed to one of my best friends a week later and they ended up together. That was ~9 years ago. It was hard, especially in the beginning, I'm not going to deny that. It was to the point, where I asked them whether I acted unfair/mean towards him because I envied him so much and wasn't able to analyse my actions rationally at that point. The answer was a definitive "no". Our friendship never broke or declined since then.
I also expect me to be in a similar, but much harder compared to my first one, situation in a not so distant future so I'm preparing myself for that already. I might fail though and maybe that will change my view of Kanbaru. Or it will make me hating myself. Or both. I don't know.
In the end, these are just the thoughts of an idealistic fool who tries to talk himself into believing that love is a non-egoistacal emotion while it's obviously not.

more of a joke than anything else since in their case it's more banter but stabbing people with pencils, or threatening to do so and such isn't nice either.

Koyomi is a bit of a masochist so he enjoys a bit of rough play she gives every now and then ;D. The nice thing about Hitagi is that she's very open and true to herself even in the moments that terrify her. That's a big part of why I like her so much.
As for Kanbaru
+ Show Spoiler +She obviously acted wrong but I do think a lot of it had to do with the paw kind of cheating her out of the situation. Most people like you mention just deal with the situation eventually. Either they break the friendship or they learn to live with it. What would happen if we had this mythical wish granting device at arms length? That's what Kanbaru faces. Her whole body was fighting him because at the core of their being she both hated him and liked him. In that moment her hatred for him was too much to handle and it took over.
Look I'm not saying what she did was right, merely that I can understand where she's coming from and why she did what she did. A lot of Monogatari is about people dealing with the extreme feelings a lot of us feel in a world where there are these magical manifestations.
Personally I've had moments where I wanted to kill someone with all of my being but then it passes. What would happen if I had a devils paw next to me in that moment? It honestly scares me to think about that. What we are capable of doing in our moments of emotional distress is terrifying.
I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite defending Kanbaru's actions while loathing Hanekawa for doing the same things. Sigh. I need to rewatch it now. DAMMIT Miragee.

I'm kind of with miragee on this one. I don't like monkey much and i dislike cat even more. The way both of them decided to try and handle their problems is just way too extreme for me to be able to defend it despite kind of understanding where they're coming from.

So i just watched Future Diary and it was quite fun. Does anyone know where one might look to find something similar? Not really the biggest anime buff myself.

What pieces of it did you enjoy? That may help get a more accurate recommendation.

Hmm, i guess the things i liked were idea of knowing how many opponents there were, but not knowing who they were. Good for suspense. Also i liked that Gasai seemed at first very strange, but turned out to be batshit crazy, and then getting to find out why and how that came to be. I like it when lots of questions are raised early, and then the answers are hinted throughout and then revealed at some point or other. A little love is also always nice Was also fun how the protagonist was a pussy and an idiot. You sort of expect him to grow and evolve like main chars tend to do in animes, but he was still a pussy and and idiot almost untill the end, and a homocidal one at that.

If you liked the 'survival game' part of it, you might enjoy Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works and Fate/Zero (both are good, recommended order by most here is F/SN:UBW then F/Z). In F/Z all opponents are basically known, but their Servants' powers aren't known from the start.

Are there any Gintama fans in here?
|
I've seen Shigurui anime some years ago, and enjoyed it. Re-discovered that serie, and decided to see how the story ends with the manga (The Anime stops without a proper conclusion, if I remember correction).
So far, so good, very brutal.
How good of a portrait is the serie on the samurai's era?

They left today's episode on a huge cliffhanger (as a manga reader, I suspected that they would choose there to stop). The OP/ED changes are really cool, and this arc is probably my favourite shounen arc so I'm pretty hyped for it to progress (next week involves a certain sadist and idiot brother).

An Anime that is kind of similar is "Deadman Wonderland." I think it failed in a lot of areas so I'm a bit hesitant to recommend it. You might want to feel this one out for a few episodes. It's another Anime about killing others and surviving that has a pansy protagonist.
If you want to watch something that is about people going psycho crazy like Gasai Yuno then you might like "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni." It's a dark Anime about kids that go psycho and kill people.
The Anime movie "Akira" also has elements of people going psycho and killing others. The movie is old but a true classic. You should watch it regardless.
All 3 of the above that I mentioned also have some mystery and mild love elements as well.

Well Monkey is a lewd lesbian Tomboy. It'll take a lot to make me dislike that ;(. Really though I think all the girls in monogatari are pretty solid. Even the ones I don't like too much are still good characters. Maybe because there's no doormat-chan in this. Think those are the only characters I truly despise.

Kanbaru is 100000x better after her arc is over. If you only saw her 1st appearance you might still have a bad impression. But continue watching and she is just so much better than everyone not named Shinobu and Hitagi and then by Owari she is leaving Hitagi in the dust and is only a bit behind Shinobu.

While I agree with your initial point I can't agree with the latter. The valentines chocolate scene in tsuki made me erect for a month. Still need to watch Owari, just sad how Nisio ignores her so much . Also Bird/Bee are still awesome. Can't just ignore them.
