If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

Wow, that was quite the plot "switch" in Charlotte. Some others saw it coming, I didn't.

I am only halfway through the Charlotte ep and....wow did not see that coming lol. It is all pretty interesting though. It explains what all those little hints were they had sprinkled in the early eps.

That's fine but it doesn't explain why the form of a human is superior to a simple plane or tank design. I think another mecha anime justifies land based mechs as being able to traverse tough terrain faster, but a lot of the fights in Gundam are aerial or space. So you would think they would change into a vehicle better suited, but in the Gundam series mobile suits can do everything from underwater fights, to aerial fights to space and planetary reentry.

well the human body has evolved over hundreds of years to be extremely suited to a wide range of tasks including feats of combat, maneuverability and utility. a flying tank is not going to be very mobile, whereas a mecha squirrel might be agile but lacks other human designs. you might argue that other animals or forms outclass the human body in some ways and then you get gorilla gundam that was just posted (not to mention playable animals in video games like donkey kong).

I think you need to establish which Gundam you are talking about. They all don't have the same technology and rules in each of their universe.

For example, at least in most UC Gundams, Mobile Suits can't fly. Most can't do planetary reentry. Unless its specifically designed to do so, they can't operate well underwater. Operating in space and on land is where most of them are designed for. Space is probably the best environment for mecha, anyway. Especially when said magic particle makes everything have to be fought up close. UC Gundam also does have fighter planes and tanks, anyway. Any setting with a plausible excuse for mecha will make use of combined arms, where you won't have just 1 type of weapon do everything.

The human body is actually pretty bad at specialized tasks. It's good at being ok at doing a lot of stuff which is fine as we just make stuff to do specialized tasks. If you can have magic physics and transforming weapons then there's no real reason for them to be modeled after the human body. You'd merely have enough specialized forms to cover each instance or have enough different models for the differing requirements.

Only long distance running is something we are good at :D

Really it's just about having mechas fight in a cool setting. Modern day combat sucks ass for cool action stories. That's why so much of fantasy is set in medieval setting with modern values/livestyles. It's just more interesting. Having big giant robots with swords hit each other is cool.

It's true that no mobile suit can do everything well, the Gundam of the original series, RX-78-2 Gundam, did do everything, but not well for example it was terrible at underwater fights though still won. Though in every form of combat a mobile suit with a humanoid design was acceptable or cutting edge with one mobile suit or another. The justification for arms is the ability to change weapons and use a wide variety of tools, but then you have to make large guns with triggers. The same could be done with different attachable weapons to a vehicle, a slot to affix a rocket launcher or laser. The legs seem harder to justify in non land settings. In space don't mobile suits fly mostly with their back pack jets? Do the legs help control flight or add boost?

Legs are just for show?

Strike witches is awesome. Also check out Vividred operation. I know Sent thinks it's way better but I like both of them. It's really a question of Panties vs Spats which isn't something that you can answer in merely one lifetime.

I didn't expect that, at all lol
Funny how Yuu's brother is named Shun and he forgot about him. Seems like a reference to SSY.
So they're taking the route of time travel, can be very interesting.
Yuu's power is OP too, he can take over a body for 5s, by also copy the power of other, and more than one at the time. Probably get a time limit I guess but still freaking OP lol.

It was certainly expected that the Imouto was going to be saved, but I didn't expect the story to change like this. It's pretty much a completely new Anime now. It definitely is the most interesting episode so far for me; everything you thought was going on just got thrown out the window. Yuu's power is considered the strongest for good reason, it's a short hop away from omnipotence. Seems like his whole family is OP in various ways though. They must be the Alpha family when it comes to powers.

Charlotte's twist isn't that surprising tbh. + Show Spoiler +
We've seen a lot of hints about another brother in the family and we've had talks of scientists testing on them since the first day when he was caught cheating. Still, it's kinda amazing in a way how it shifted so much due to the song. One minute, they are in a concert and it seems that the most important thing is to tell others with powers to stop using them unless they want to get caught and the next, we are in a hospital room with it being revealed that big brother is real and alive, his little sister is still alive etc...
. I'm a bit excited to see what they have in store for us in upcoming episodes.
Akagami: nice to see that we still have a strong unwavering female MC.
God Eater: last episode wasn't too bad. Hopefully, we get some more fights and we get more information about the characters because frankly, the anime is doing a shitty job of making me sympathize with any of them. Also, the art is starting to become a bit annoying now lol.
Kuusen: surprisingly, I've been enjoying this more and more recently. MC is a bit OP, but, I like how he has everything planned and is quite laid back. That and it's interesting to see the team's progression since the first episode.
Rokka: One of the best running anime atm. + Show Spoiler +
The mystery keeps deepening and you can technically suspect anyone atm, except for main MCs.
. I'm waiting to see what episode 9 brings to the table, should be good

RX-78-2 didn't fly, but did go underwater to fight a few times. It was definitely hindered down there. The main reason it was able to come out on top was because the RX-78-2 was the only mobile suit at the time with Beam Weapons, and Lunar Titaninum was much more durable than the Steel most other mobile suits were made out of.

In Space, legs are for kicking:

Or for going inside of Space Colonies. The Zeong was actually incomplete. The complete version (the Perfect Zeong, if you want to look up pictures) would have had legs.

It's not so much that arms and legs can't be used at all (though I didn't remember the space kicks), but just there are more practical alternatives that make the machines easier to make and mass produce if they were real. I'm sure most Zeon pilots did not do space kicks it's just Char is a badass. I agree with Zeong engineer that the Zeong is essentially complete, I don't think Char would have done better with a 100% Zeong vs an 80% no leg Zeong. Specialized vehicles seem more practical, without arms and legs a fighter plane in space or in the atmosphere should have more maneuverability and in the Gundam series with similar fire power like the core fighter. Put a beam weapon on core fighters and then mobile suits should be obsolete.

The whole thing is just the romance of mechas. A fighter plane design is sleeker and should be able to do the same things mechs can do, but you don't get that manly duel feel like Amuro vs Char here as you would if they were in fighter planes.

+ Show Spoiler [Charlotte] +

I'm glad I stopped on the first post, ignored the spoilers, minimized my window, and watched Charlotte. Throwing that twist in and suddenly some things make sense. I wonder if that family secret recipe pizza sauce had a little something extra in it to slow down Ayumi's development. The next episode, when Shun starts the 'splaining, might be really interesting.

Also, Zhiend's music was pretty good, although it seems like the English lyrics got better the longer she sang. Time-travel though - I can guess how Yu is going to save Ayumi but I do have to wonder about why Shun and Sala are both blind. What did he/they do to change the world? And where did the money come from? What will saving Ayumi do to Yu and Nao's almost not really maybe it could have been relationship? Will Yu pull an Araragi and try to fix things only to end the world?

Such plot twist, much mindfuck; despite the little hints.
Yes, I email sponsors... to thank them. Don't post drunk, kids. My king, what has become of you?
