Is this series good for that purpose or not? Also, is it good in general? I can see such a series starting out strong and devolving into magic bullshit towards the end (which is one of my biggest worries).

Simply put, it's one of the best animated series out there, period. The only series I can think of that compares in scope is Legend of the Galactic Heroes, given how many characters and it shows all their motivations and reasons behind their actions.

Monster is amazing, one of the best animes I have watched so far. The pacing is quite slow at times, especially in the beginning but the concept, characters and writing is great. It's quite dark and touches a lot of touchy subjects in great detail. On your other question: it depends. I would say there is a character that generally outclasses everyone but he acts more in the backround most of the time. Generally it's not really like that but there are mindgames involved. You should watch it regardless. It's a show nobody should miss.

This has nothing to do with mindgames like Akagi or One Outs. Watch Kaiji. It is a lot slower paced and the appreciation of the show is in the story, the characters and the discovery. Its a completely different vibe to what you might think.
