Its hard to call any character "pretty solid" in IS when the entire cast is a harem of girls who obsess over one of the most intolerable MCs ever. Everything they do revolves around Ichika. If you made an IS anime without Ichika, you would essentially be making difference characters of everyone else as well, in which case it stops being IS and becomes just another mecha musume anime.
