If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

Maybe we wouldn't have to go so far as completely overhauling the rec list, but i think like a 2-3 sentence description for each would go a long way. Sort of like the season list has.

To be fair, how one rates a show might not be indicative of how much they enjoyed it. You could argue that "enjoyment/feel good" is the most important quality factor, but it's not crazy for someone to rate a show lowly based on other factors (e.g., music, animation, story, general production), Then, there are so many approaches to rating that it would be infeasible to universalize a standard (e.g., starting at a 10 and deducting points for flaws, starting with a 5 and moving from there, curving scores based on seen anime versus all anime, etc.). You don't have to be a masochist to have a low mean.

I'm pretty sure ZNF is just a masochist, though.

It's difficult enough to get people happy about what's even on the list. Now you want people to agree on what's important enough to be mentioned in synopses and how much information should even be listed? GLHF :3

As blahz will tell you himself, he just has strong feelings on most shows. Particularly Kampfer and Fault I guess :S

I think the idea that everyone here hates everything comes from the fact that nobody all likes the same thing, so there's always someone to shit on any given show, and we all know each other well enough to know how arguing amongst ourselves is gonna end up. And the rest just don't care to argue.

My average is pretty low too, (at least I think it is) but I guess I rate things differently than most

I really don't get a lot of you guys. My average ratings are high. After a couple episodes I can tell if I'm gonna enjoy the show or not, so of the ones I complete the lowest i'll rate is probably around 5 or 6 out of 10 (if it's any lower, i'm not gonna bother watching it). Then, I rate based on enjoyment...Did i enjoy the show? could things have been done better? Maybe they could have, but if I enjoyed the time I spent watching it I'm gonna give it a good rating even if things like story or character development/interaction didn't go the way I wanted.

well I've always wondered, if you rated something really low, why did you bother finishing (to rate) it in the first place?

unless it was one of those series that started out fantastic and then the author took a massive shit all over it, but those are few and far between

Some people's tastes change and they reevaluate a show after they've seen it, I guess.

Boredom? To find more material to shit on the show? Or some people just like to finish what they start even if it sucks. I rarely drop shows so my dropped list is pretty small. And some that I have completed I don't even bother to put on my completed list because I don't want to shit up my list (looking at you school days). It really just goes into your philosophy on watching anime.

People with higher average scores are probably more likely to be ones who only add shows decent and up because they don't watch/finish/rate anything they think is terrible. Plus the vastly different ways people score. What I think a score of 8 means entirely something different then someone else.

pretty much this though I haven't dropped much shows that I've started watching. If I like something a couple of episodes in, most likely I'll continue enjoying it. I do include all animes I've watched on my list though though I heavily rate based on enjoyment and in some cases, guts of the author to pull off what they did I can go into more details but not a good idea lol.

That's true...and to be honest, I actually haven't dropped a show yet so my earlier statement about only rating things i like is somewhat misleading. But then again, every show I've seen I've liked to some extent or at the very least found something enjoyable about it.

yeah. How are we supposed to make people acknowledge esports as a sport if we can't even agree that warfare is a sport too.

Clearly zerg needs "FUN"

Pretty sure i have never rated stuff lesser than 5.

I am pretty diligent when it comes to rating. For example like SAO i really hate the show but i rate it 7. And even if i don't enjoy the show if the show has good production stuff then i still rate it 6 or 7.

8 for me means i somehow enjoyed then show. 9 for me is that i enjoyed the show. I think i never rated 10 in my life since i am reserving it for the closest to perfect anime.

Actually anime that i really really loved i still rated it 9 like fate zero and haruhi. And if the animehas a really really good quality, it doesn't matter if i don't enjoy it as much i'd still rate it 9.

Basically my 9 and 10 are rated as 9. Anything that is good is 9. Anything that i enjoy is 9.

I just found Terra e... (scrolling around myanimelist.net)

Watched the first 2 episodes. Nice nice! I hope the kid's emo state won't last too long ; I'd love to learn more about that crazy future! (Although, I have a strange feeling that it will turn into a rebellion soon enough..)

think it's worth a watch? Read the summary, seems like it'll be interesting to watch.

Well, so far, 2 episodes in, I'm liking it. I'll definitely keep watching. My main concern is that the anime takes the rebellion route too quickly. I enjoy SCI-FI because they portray crazy future. I dislike action stories 'featuring sci-fi elements'. (not sure if that makes any sense...)

I'll try to make an analogy : I love the Zombie genre (AKA : survival and horror). I DISLIKE action-zombie movies (like Resident Evil movies, except maybe for first one) because Zombies become an EXCUSE for action. I don't dislike action, but I prefer a focus over the survival part which, IMO, is the essence of the zombie genre.

I love Sci-Fi. I do enjoy action-sci-fi, but I'd rather get to know more about the universe first before seeing spaceships shooting at each other! Right now, my main fear is that Terra e... will turn into an action anime too fast.

Let me know what you think of the anime when you get to watch a few episodes Bigfan!

hmm so basically, you want the central plot of the story to be about sci-fi and not just a small portion. I guess you mean everything is engulfed in those elements, right? I get what you mean though if you had some anime example, it would help me make sure I got your point lol.

I plan to watch some tommorrow so will definitely let you know what I think of it then

I think Steins;Gate fits this description perfectly. I dont really know of a lot of animes that are good Sci-fi worlds but books I'm very proficient in. Asimov wrote a lot of stuff like that, Ben Bova has a lot too.

Anyways, I watched Tales of Vesperia: First Strike movie today, I really enjoyed it. I loooved the game and its storyline and characters so it was cool to see this. It's a prequel with it's own good standalone story if you haven't played the game. I was surprised it was so good being an "adaptation" from a video game, but what I think they did really well was not try to just tell the same story from the game and come up with a different story that worked. The dog Repede was adorable in this, one of my favorite parts was when they're in a tavern and he finds a spoon and sniffs it, and in the next scene he swapped out the stick he was carrying for the spoon. I also loved how they played the opening scene/music video from the game at the end of the movie/during the credits which makes it feel so connected with the games story.

+ Show Spoiler +
I do love this song..just hearing it that once from watching the movie, and now it'll be in my head for like a week

Unsure if Steins;Gate fit that description haha. It felt like the typical time-travelling story to me.
Say Psycho-Pass for example : Yea you get your usual action scenes, but you still get some scenes explaining their world. Something like that would make me happy (but of course, some of the best sci-fi are in books).

On the other hand, Knights of Sidonia is more action-oriented. You get to see very few aspects of their world which is sad because it seems that it holds alot of potential. (the reactor that is used to burn the elderly, deads and useless? The political system, the cloning system?)

I'm 4 episodes into the serie. Still good, but definitely lacking on the world. More focused on character development.

Yo Goody, don't be hatin' on Ahh! My Goddess. Its average at its worst and slightly above average at times.

Xen, Read the manga for Knights of Sidonia: It explains more. Also I think the reactor that burns corpses doesn't burn all those you mentioned I think it was a joke when that was said.
