Sometimes the evaluations people give these anime in question confuses me. Like since this topic started with Death Note, lets go with that. People will say that Death Note is really good (other than the second half). But doesn't that mean that Death Note is 50% shit, then? Its like people really liked one part (because the first half was good), but then they just pretend like the second half doesn't actually exist when evaluating the anime. | ||

Take Berserk. The Golden Age stuff was pretty well done, and is classic/iconic enough that it's been adapted multiple times. But the stuff after that is rather lackluster in comparison. It loses a lot of the elements that made Berserk memorable in the first place. So is Berserk iconic or not? | ||

Computing an average doesnt cut it when quality varies, you lose too much information. Compare it with paintings, i'd rather look at 1 van Gogh and 1 of my own, then 2 mediocre paintings, because the van Gogh is way more interesting than any of the mediocre paintings. So yeah, disregarding parts is silly, but i can understand highlighting the good parts, cause they're the potentially interesting ones. In the case of Death Note, i'd recommend watching it, but note that the second half is worse than the first. | ||

Not sure how its relevant here. And I'm not sure if you are intentionally misrepresenting what I said or not. I didn't say "Because one part is shit, the whole thing is shit". I never even implied in the least that the quality of a series has to be uniform throughout, so I'm not sure why you are even going in that direction. I'm saying is half of the work is shit, then when evaluating how good the overall series is, then its 50% shit. Its like if someone was evaluating how good Bleach is, and then judge it based only on everything up to the Soul Society arc. If they do that, they are kind of ignoring large portions of the anime/manga, and not judging it as a whole. Its perfectly okay to say "this part was good", but "this part is good" doesn't mean the entire thing is. | ||

This goes beyond manga too. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but the iconic Ghost in the Shell movie was an adaptation of a manga series that is quite different from what the movie turned out to be. Not to mention there are a lot of adaptations in anime that people don't know is an adaptation. | ||
