More pilots, Rei and Asuka with totally different personalities and all the different angels, some with pretty interesting designs were a good addition and then the fourth being added was great as well since I felt the plot was moving forward and how will Shinji react to it and such but I feel it started to lose potential at that point or shortly after. Shinji being such a closed individual, running like a gazillion times and such was ok at first but got tiresome when it kept on happening. Asuka was great in her role but then once she got depressed, it would've made for a great team building episode but that never came to be. Rei's past and the fact that there are other vessels so the soul gets moved from one part to another was ok I guess and was also unexpected but her personality didn't change much aside from telling Shinji that she's glad he's good when he was in the hospital and crying at one point but not knowing the reason for it.

Then the dead sea scrolls and the whole angel idea. We were never told/shown etc... what was in the scrolls. There was only talk about this human instrumentality project and how it's unification of the soul but angels, their origin, reasoning for their attacks etc... were never explained which is something I was looking forward to. Are we supposed to assume they are being sent from God? I mean, the name angels and other religious references were because they were "interesting and exotic". Same with that last angel. I mean wtf, angels were killing them then the last one just gives up and asks Shinji to kill him to have humanity evolve and save it? what? what's with the change and why is the council or rather how is the council even contacting angels since they recruited him (maybe they didn't know? >.>)? The second impact didn't get much significance either. We were told it was a lie and that it was contact with Adam (blows up yet they still have corpse?). I feel they should've explored it more.

Then the last two episodes. What seemed to be a show building up the characters and show their fight for survival against the angels became so individualistic and the last two episodes were so painful to watch. It's like they went, hey, we don't know how to end, let's just say that after the last angel is killed, all our souls are unified then we can just ignore everything else and focus on 3-4 characters and say the main character's problems are fixed in the end. Came out of left field and I was not expecting to see characters being asked questions, almost like they were interrogated. Most of the questions/answers were stuff we already knew. While I understand the ending to some degree, I feel that it destroyed a chunk of the show for me. There never seemed to a link between the angels and human instrumentality project from what I watched. Seemed like they were separate from each other. Heck, we were never even told much about Eva aside from the fact that it was made from Adam or so. What about it working on it's own or when it sucked up Shinji? What about when it saved Shinji? What was the purpose of that? I guess I have some reading to do on this stuff. I kinda wish they worked out the other character's problems unless they did and I missed it because it was putting me to sleep ...
