Log Horizon and SAO aren't really similar at all in terms of what they cover. But I guess it is also the easiest comparison to make.

You say that but I remember more than once people here justifying or saying they watch X or Y because it's the best looking show of X season etc, so for a lot of people graphics alone seem to be enough to watch a show. Tari Tari does look very nice graphics wise but if the story isn't very good then I wouldn't say it's good, I want to give it a shot though so let's see what happens. I wouldn't watch a show based on just good music alone either, but except for maybe Titan, good music is usually coupled with a decent show like Beck, Nodame or Sakamichi.
I really liked SAO as well, I thought it was a good romcom type of show but besides that it was kind of bad. I specially disliked how the "game" in the show was nothing really like an MMO, Log Horizon sticks a lot more to how MMO's are in comparison to SAO which makes it trivial by making Kirito the hero that can solo entire raids <.< when at the beginning they needed a whole group for 1 boss.

I think music is a pretty important part of any show (otherwise, you could just read manga or LNs). I'm usually willing to sacrifice a better narrative for much better music; particularly, if I know there's source material with better execution of story/portrayal of characters, then I'm primarily looking for good aesthetics and music. If you just want to rate a show alone, I agree that music can't carry by itself although I still value it above near-worthless.

To me, if the story can't pull its weight, then the music is wasted on the story and I might as well as just listen to the OST. There are definitely cases where a really good soundtrack made something mediocre more bearable and possible to power through. But my tolerance of those just dropped lower and lower over time.

That argument tends to be more a comparison of watching nothing vs watching something that looks pretty. Rather than picking two shows and selecting only the pretty one.
SAO's point was that it wasn't a game, unless you count a death game as a 'game'. None of potentials and interesting parts of the Aincrad portions involved that aspect. Obviously as the series got dragged on it started pandering more and more toward the audience and tried to introduce more game-like stuff. But for the most part being a game has nothing to do with the series. Log Horizon is very different in that respect.

Music is great and I definitely give a lot of preference to shows where I enjoy the music but it's definitely not as big an influence as it used to be.

Log horizon, imo, surpasses SAO. Both takes place in a similar universe (MMO and for some reasons, players are unable to log off). The way Log Horizon is presented, it feels like a real game. Whereas SAO was more about an OP player beating people; the game elements were close to none.
I feel like most of the time, good songs/ost will be in a good anime. I don't recall the last bad anime with good music I've watched, or vice versa, the good anime with bad music...

No shit Log Horizon surpasses SAO.
SAO sucked big motherfucking donkey balls. First 2 eps were good, after that it just stopped being interesting and took itself WAY too seriously.

Music can either be a really good complement to the story or a distraction if its bad. I couldn't help but constantly think that the music just wasn't right all through Claymore and is pretty much the only major complaint besides that crime they call an ending.
