I don't even understand this, unless Touma somehow became terrible during season 2 (didn't see it). Dude was standard main character to the max. I can understand not liking him, but hating him doesn't really make any sense.

yeah this. And it's not like anything is changing except for the worse in S2 imo. It's the same with EVERY "boss" fight. Guy shows up, streetfight, touma get's his ass kicked bloody, Touma has a speech about how wrong "Boss" is with his actions, "Boss" starts crying/explaining how his/her childhood was horrible, Touma explains that he completly understands how "Boss" feels and he's deeply sorry for him but he still has to punch him because killing newborn babies is bad no matter how much you got bullied. He then proceeds to punch "Boss" in the face despite being kicked in the Ass all the time and gg no re.
It's worse than watching Dragonball Z and Goku having speeches and you're just sitting there thinking holy crap I've got it, you're the nicest guy on earth who wouldn't harm a fly if he didn't have to, now could you please shut up and just punch her/him already
Index was fine whenever it had nothing to do with the story. The Borcelerator action and mini-Misaka or even clone-Misaka action in general was really nice to watch. But as soon as it got to storymode it was just so horrible to watch Touma do his thing

Duuude, you should definetly try Mirai Nikki instead. The first 10 or so episodes are so action packed you won't be able to stop watching it.
I try to be as objective as I can be, so I won't say you should give up on Elfen Lied, but Mirai Nikki is almost the same, but with an actual story, characters, story, and ending (though with almost any anime, opinions on the ending is mixed, but the anime's ending is actually better than the manga's there), with less gore, which you don't seem to like. MN is brutal, but not as much as EL.
Also, MN is beautiful, if you watch it in 720p or better. I didn't hold it againts Elfen Lied, because it's a much older anime, but Mira Nikki is very colourful and well-detailed.
Any other animes (recent ones preferred with 720p+) that are just like Elfen Lied? Took a really long hiatus from anime, and only watched the standard duo + a few others like Death Note, Geass, etc., but the dark/tragic/horror/violence really grasped my attention. I really enjoyed Fate Night Stay (?), Claymore, Proxy something (?).. basically pretty much anything that has a complex plot with action and dark undertones. Any suggestions is appreciated!

The claymore manga is still pretty good. I first watched the anime till episode 22 and then started reading the manga from chapter 59 it just continues the story.

I still didn't finish anime, but if thats the case, I'll probably pick up the manga as well after that. How much longer does the manga go on?

Its older than Soul eater and still ongoing, its started meandering a bit now. Atleast Soul Eater ended reasonably well and didnt drag on. Claymore is starting to get like that.
Claymore anime was incredible in the middle portion, around 6-13 or so. Weak ending though, it'd have had potential for much more. I don't understand why animes like this they cut short but animes like Naruto they make 500 episodes of.
Oh and Grisaia no Kajitsu is hilarious thus far, love the characters.
