If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

Since I'm already talking about this, my favorite animated arc so far is library girl (first season) and teacher girl (second season - this one especially stands out). Kanon's was good, too.
Just wanted to say that the story is linear and that there's even *gasp* character development

True thing. I loved that one as well, probably my overall favorite if you ignore Haqua for being Haqua, which obviously is out of everyone elses league.

About the character development... well kind of but not really. He does care for the girls and always has just not in that sense, so that's not a change in the first place. There have been other examples for that. + Show Spoiler [yet to come] +
the chihiro-one stands out as something where you clearly see him suffer under the conditions. Yeah he carries through but it's not like he's "lol who cares, here's my goal and nothing else matters". It does get to him.

Now that I think about it, the first chihiro encouter could be mentioned here as well, couldn't it? He completly hates her for being that unreasonable sidegirl and completly refuses to conquer her (btw ignoring the collar, argueing that one or two missed spirits apparently don't matter, as seen in haqua "arc", so I wouldn't bring that up at all). Until he starts to feel sorry for her.

TL;dr: He probably cares for them like someone cares for a loved animal. You get mad when they're hurt and want to help but you don't consider them your equal or a potential partner. If anything you could argue that they got upgraded from being treated like loved animals you care for to being treated alike friends from time to time.

Character development? not really.

Pretty sure Keima actually caring about people other than himself in the real world counts as character development.

Unless it turns out in the end he had some ulterior motive to all this, but so far it seems like he's doing it simply because he wants to help them.

He also wants to not die because if he fails, he joins the decapitated club.

Where are you getting that from? To my knowledge that only applies to conquering the girls when they have the spirit things inside of them, which has nothing to do with this case.

The fact that he's still wearing the head decapitating collar.

Um. That's not a reason to support your assumption at all lol.

He's wearing the collar because he's still collecting the souls he was contracted to, so he won't be released until he collects them all. I asked why is he specifically helping these girls, when it has nothing to do with collecting souls. Him not helping them would not result in the neckbrace activating, as it was not a part of his contract with Elsie.

In other words, he's doing it because he wants to help them, not because he has to or die. The same guy who basically wanted nothing to do with the real world at the start of the series, is actively choosing to help others. AKA - Character Development.

Was Tenri's stuff introduced? If so, then it sort of shows that there hasn't been any character development. If he starts something, he tries to finish it. Whatever he takes as his responsibility, he'll take responsibility for it and see it through to the end. And now spoiler because I'm not sure how far the anime is
+ Show Spoiler +
Pretty sure Keima wants to help the goddesses because they could get rid of all the evil spirits. Not really because he likes them or wants to be involved with them.

Pretty much this.

If he continues collecting the runaway spirits, he has to capture something like 10,000 girls because that's how many spirits were released. + Show Spoiler [Goddess Arc] +
The goddesses are a shortcut introduced by the author to speed this up, because once the goddesses are revived, they will capture the 10,000 spirits for him, and end in the most anticlimatic possible way.

Unless this was introduced sometime in-between the second and third season (that we didn't see), he hasn't been doing it because of this, since he hasn't been made aware of it yet.

+ Show Spoiler +
Not that I'm shocked the author would make such a cop-out. 10,000 is an insane number to catch.

Pretty sure he was made aware of the number in s2 without being told that it could work again. That should have been the Haqua episode if I'm not mistaken, at least that's when he asks how many spirits get caught per month and realizes that the usual way isn't feasable.
+ Show Spoiler +
Tenri told him later on that they could do the same thing again if the 6 of them are combined again. Should have happened (as in: it did not) in ep02 this season if I'm not mistaken. She DID tell him that they sealed them but did not point out that they could do it again. It was a big thing in the manga though.
Again haven't looked it up but I think it happened before Kanon got stabbed and Keima agreed or at least thought about finding the sisters even before Kanon happened.

I thought they were super similar.

In fact when I finally watched Tatami Galaxy I was surprised that I've never heard of it mentioned when talking about NHK.

Really? Those two went like...hand in hand with every conversation I had about one or the other.

Edit: Then again, I didn't watch it until like....my 200th anime or something and I watched Welcome to the NHK as like....#20 or something so maybe you're right.

I wouldn't call it 'as realistic as possible,' and you're not gonna find an anime without any 'typical anime cliche stuff' (NHK included), but Chobits is kind of similar iirc.

Just finished rewatching Texhnolyze, loved it but I still can't make much sense of that anime. Still a good watch and I strongly recommend it to any cyberpunk fan, just be warned that the first few episodes are quite slow.

I didn't cry at the end iirc, just felt empty inside.

Finished Saya no Uta yesterday (babby's first VN). It was an interesting experience to say the least.

Seems like Gen could go all out on this one compared to most of his other stuff.
It's a beautiful love story and an insight into human psyche. No matter how fucked up it was, their emotions were just all too human.
As for the storytelling, I enjoyed the foreshadowing and different perspectives (though it was somewhat predictable at times I guess).
Song of Saya I & II from the OST are great and contributed a lot to the atmosphere.

Time to move on to Kara no Shoujo, which is more powerful imo because how Saya no Uta seems unreal, in the sense that it is foreign.

Are you referring to the crazy condition of the MC and Saya being a Lovecraftian monster? Just a matter of immersion I guess. I liked the contrast of unrealness/craziness and "real", human emotion. Unless you meant something else?

Kara no Shoujo is on my list, but I don't know when I'll get to read it. Don't have too much time nowadays. I thought about playing some shorter ones first (e.g. Planetarian).

If you want more fucked up Gen you could read Kikokugai. It's linear and pretty short.
