what is this monogatari everyone's talking about and what do I need to watch if I want to watch it?
tried to MAL it but got like a metric shitton of indexes when I searched for "Monogatari". Yes I could probably figure it out with a bunch of research but asking here seems a lot easier if someone knows it by heart. Sounds a lot more asshole-ish when I actually type it instead of thinking it 
All I found out so far is that it has a prequel. which apparently is Nisemonogatari, which has a prequel which is bakemonogatari. Anything else I'm missing? The order correct? Don't want to pull another railgun and end up thinking the mainstory's the sidestory and the sidestory's the mainstory.

Bakemonogatari --> Nisemonogatari --> Nekomonogatari --> Monogatari S2.
This was the aired order. Though Neko happens before Bake. But I suggest sticking with aired order.

Genshiken S2 silver spoon and S x S are great, dangan ronpa monogatari inuhami is good, uchouten kazoku should be good, I have to agree this season better than last, probably best season in about 3 or 4 seasons at least. I haven't watched this many shows in a long ass time...

Lets be honest, the Monogatari series is garbage, but at least the Monogatari series doesn't go out of its way to insult your intelligence at every opportunity.

Like I said earlier, its radically different from Gatchaman, but the name of the anime doesn't change how good it is or isn't.

Valvrave was actually utter shit. But it was so bad that it was actually good if you know what I mean. Monogatari is a quality show in every sense of it but I can understand how someone would find it boring. Anyways, anyone that find this season better than the last one has no clue lol.

Symphogeah is really good, I'm still hyped for it. Also, Symphogeah Best Girl Tier List, from left to right:

Neptunia anime, in one sense is surprising since I kinda feared it would suck, but also has been pretty good at capturing the feel of the games. Will have to see if it can maintain that when stuff actually starts happening. + Show Spoiler +Plot seems to be going in a Victoryish way, which increases Hanakana's odds for existing. Also, apparently CFW Trick might be showing up soon, and if he does, that might mean GaoGaiGar will show up!

Valvrave was not "so bad its good". It was so bad that it was terrible and should be despised. Gargantia was painfully average, SnK was a huge letdown, MJP was really good (but is also continuing this season), and everything else was either garbage or really niche. I don't think the clueless one here is me.

Hibiki is the best, she's been growing on me. Chris is still great, of course. Hibiki should have realized before this episode that "befriend" only works if you weaken the enemy first, though! But seriously, it's the second episode and we already get a triple swan song rainbow-punch-into-the-heavens. Can't wait to see what we'll get later on!
The new symphos... I like how Maria's cloak was actually useful and not just there for show. I can't help but feel like saw girl's weapons are a bit wonky though, lol.

I hope I'm being trolled here with the MJP being a AOTY contender. As for everything beside gargantia/SnK being garbage that just goes to show how little you watched last season. Yahari could easily be considered AOTY if it had a follow up but sadly we all know that brain base never bother with second's season. And Hataraku was easily the second most consistent show this season.
