It's shit. I thought it was pretty good. Though Im still confused as to how the orange haired dude managed to develop a lisp through the course of the movie. In the beginning you barely notice it, but near the end my god

Not saying that the show got bad near the end, but they started introducing all these characters and relationships that never went anywhere in the few episodes left. I feel like it needs another 13 episodes or so to flesh things out. Even if there is a second season planned, you can't just end things like that if you're not pre-scheduled for 26 episodes to begin with... Maybe the source material had something to do with it? That wasnt an "ending". You can expect a direct sequel if/when they do a season 2.

I guess my complaint is that even as an adaptation you sort of have to have some ground to stand on as a standalone. I feel like having story beats paced like that and sort of waving it off to say 'concluded in the manga'/'maybe if we get another season' just detracts from the show way too much... edit: On May 10 2013 09:03 Carnivorous Sheep wrote: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was actually the biggest piece of shit ever and anyone who deceives themselves into thinking they were given a real ending or any semblance of a coherent plot is delusional. Summer Wars gets the edge because it didn't try to be something it's not IMO. A solid average anime without anything too special, but nothing too deplorable either.

Well, I'm not saying that they have to go the whole 'animal original' route, but if they were slightly deviating from the source material to begin with, I think they should have done so in a way that didn't end the season so awkwardly. For example, why did they introduce Yuu? She had practically zero significant value in the few minutes of airtime she got. The whole Natsume-Misawa thing went nowhere, too. Granted, Shizuku-Haru also went nowhere, but that was more because they couldn't make up their goddamn minds, as opposed to the situation being presented and never being brought up again. These are things that could be expanded upon in an additional season, yes, but if that was the plan why didn't they just introduce them early on in the new season? Were they just throwing in these 'cliffhangers' in hopes of getting viewers wanting for an additional season so they could actually justify funding it? Again, it wouldn't be (and won't be..?) an issue if the second season aired and it started as Tonari no Kaibutusu episode 14 or whatever, but as it stands, Tonari no Kaibutusu sits on my MAL, completed, at 13/13, and with an iffy taste in my mouth. edit: On May 10 2013 09:33 Carnivorous Sheep wrote: Summer Wars gets the edge because it didn't try to be something it's not IMO. I actually enjoyed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (shit-for-brains-conclusion though, I agree) and had high hopes for Summer Wars, so I think I was just let down hard when I got something that I wasn't expecting... whatever the fuck that was...

I thought the pacing was fine. What I liked a lot about Tonari was that it was done in its own unique way. They didnt adhere to how most other romcoms would give you a "start, middle, and end". People expecting the usual might not like it, and I can see why. But I personally loved learning about each characters story, no matter how minimal it was.

How awesome is that, god damn. One of the few times I laughed out loud during the show. The show could've used her character sprinkled in here and there earlier on and it would've been so much greater on the comedy front. Missed opportunities! edit: warawara

And The Girl Who Leapt Through Time wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The main character was fairly likeable and there was some alright humor. The plot was just "meh" because any anime/movie/show that tries to do a time-travel-related plot always fail at it. Only a good sci-fi writer (Stephen Baxter for example) can and should do time-travel plots. [Incoming Steins; Gayte Rage] But romantic comedies are always going to suck because they have been drained of anything good in them. Now if they are comedies about romance, they might be okay (Seto no Hanayome). Tonari might be a bit different but it's still bad romantic comedy... Have you really seen anything that you haven't seen before in a romcom nowadays?
