This is through nostalgia glasses but I think it's 1 = 2 > 3 for me. 3 was still really cool though. I dare not rewatch any pokemon content, honestly. I'm afraid it'll be bad without nostalgia. Pretty much why I'm watching it lol. I remember playing the card game competitively as I was a kid and went to go see it. Good times :B Lol in contrast to your childhood, when I was in elementary school everyone played pokemon but no one actually knew how to play. Also, I realized how awesome the Shingeki no Kyojin OP is because of that video with the Indian people.
It's a lot better than with the normal OP video lol.

I'm on episode 23 of Akagi and it's basically YuGiOh: Mahjong edition. Except I have absolutely no idea how to play and they stretch out a single game for about 5 episodes.

Mushishi Natsume Yuujinchou Kaiji Planetes Kara no Kyoukai movies
Think most people should enjoy at least 4 out of those 5.

If you don't have much time to watch 26 episodes, it will waste your time. The first three episodes are very good.

Don't you feel the manliness, the darkness and all that?

In fairness, One Outs is a lot better than that because it doesn't drag out like Washizu arc does.
I think I mentioned that like just a few pages ago.
Besides, Ten manga >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Akagi. Should just go read that for mahjong, manliness, mild amounts of darkness, and an infinite amount of feels at the last few volumes.

I feel you man, Ten is so good. The Washizu arc was what made me give Akagi only a 9 :/
Still, not really comparable to the YuGiOh anime imo.
Edit: And I would kill for a Ten anime.

What do you guys mean exactly when you say Akagi = YuGiOh :o

On April 15 2013 10:13 brumzy wrote: What do you guys mean exactly when you say Akagi = YuGiOh :o Personally, I think its nothing like Yu-Gi-Oh!. Especially not when you actually understand how mahjong and the psychological aspect of the series work out. I think the guy just didn't have anything to compare it to.

On April 15 2013 10:13 brumzy wrote: What do you guys mean exactly when you say Akagi = YuGiOh :o Five minutes of psychology, philosophy, and smacktalk for every move. Akagi tries to mysticize gambling and luck, but there's also strategy and traps that you'd find in Deathnote.

Mahjong is too complicated, probably another reason I didn't try to watch Akagi for too long.

The basics are pretty easy. http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html playing this game could help you out, it has a decent basic introduction. I can't find the other pages on demand, sadly.
The only problem would really be "how much does this hand actually give me in points" but it's pretty easy to work out after a few games.
Edit: They do give an okay introduction to the game in the first few episodes, since at the start Akagi knows fuck all about mahjong. Triad subs are really nice at explaining commonly used terms in mahjong too. But if it isn't enough, as repeated many a time, One Outs is pretty much Akagi playing baseball instead of Mahjong (same VA and actual voice, studio, character type, music composer etc)

Fukumoto -Akagi's mangaka- is pretty knowledgeable about mahjong, so all his mahjong mangas are rather realistic as to what happens in the game (unlike stuff like Saki). What Akagi does is actually always smart gameplay-wise, albeit on the risky end of the spectrum. Plays aren't statistically over the top (again, nothing to do with Saki's systematic rinshan or haitei, or Koizumi's "at least yakuman" requirements), merely strongly coincidental and mahjong players don't have any magical special powers per say. In YuGiOh, I always feel like the main characters are saved by some random card out of the blue, even cards who sometimes don't exist in the core game. It has too much of "deus ex machina" moments to be compared to Akagi, sometimes quite literally (Egyptian God cards).
But yeah, it takes quite a bit to really appreciate Akagi. You kinda have to at least read the rules of Mahjong. I rewatched Akagi several times later on after having played a fair bit of mahjong, and the plays are always more awesome each time. I guess you have to appreciate mahjong to give Akagi more than a 6-7.
Also, Akagi's narrator is god-tier as far as anime narrators are concerned, imo.

It's actually pretty simple, as far as the basics are concerned. I think the only thing that's really throwing me off is the scoring system, but other than that, it doesn't seem much harder to grasp than some competitive card games or something.
