If I have to watch one more episode dedicated to the reverse-blade sword I'll source a reverse-blade sword with which to poke own eyes out, and, possibly, make a 24 episode anime series about the experience. Here's the rub, I get bored easily and totally zone out if the story moves too slowly, or worse: there are episodes quite obviously just there to fill time. I'm basically looking for a series to watch that avoids these pitfalls, and I figured I'd ask the experts! I'm open to genres, though I guess more adult stuff would be preferred! Any recommendations? Many thanks in advance. What did he recommend you? Also, mod note at the top. They are not current releases. A lot of them are old and are considered some of the best that anime has to offer in their respective genres. If you say that plot blurbs don't do anything for you, I hardly can believe why you'd take the advice of random strangers, all of which may have distinctive tastes different from you.

Many thanks in advance. You really cannot go wrong with Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Its action type series. Another suggestion would be Cross Game. More on the slice of life/sports genre. These are probably the best recommendations I can give someone who is completely new to anime. In my own experience, I found myself watching 5 episodes back to back, when I told myself I would only watch 1 ep at a time before bed.

If you need listening practice radio works ok too. How good is your Japanese anyway? I know you mention a teacher but I know people who've studied for 3 years and still only know like 5 kanji. As for actual recommendations though, Ika Musume, Haruhi, Nichijou, etc. The language in those is probably going to be more useful than your "reverse-blade sword" haha. + Show Spoiler + If anyone implies my suggestions are not for adults I swear I will wreck you I swear on my mums life

Anime will help you a ton when it comes to pronaunciation and just general sentence structure/small vocab. Besides, if it's fun for you anyways ( and helps your japanese on top) why not watch it? How good is your Japanese anyway? I know you mention a teacher but I know people who've studied for 3 years and still only know like 5 kanji. This is not studying.

I don't know how they managed to learn so little kanji but this is the state of some of the language teachers in this country. Obviously some are really good but some are so terrible. I'm not saying don't watch anime, just don't let it be the primary source of your learning material. Come to think of it, has anyone taken the JLPT here and at what level?

Now explain a 4 for Horizon! (even though I understand how people who never read the source would be confused, it still makes me MAD!)

These are the main things that I had a problem with: 1. They take cow tits to a whole new level lol. It was seriously too distracting. 2. The pacing is way too fast, as in I have no idea what is going on fast, did they just skip a bunch of stuff that I'm supposed to know fast. Pacing issues usually makes me give something a lot lower score than I would've given them without the pacing issues. 3. I also found the mood too distracting to focus on the story. They quickly switch between serious and comedic stuff. I think it would be a lot better if they focus a bit more on the serious stuff or just go full out comedy, going somewhere in between is just too distracting, or at least make a transition between scenes. Having them joking around while fighting a war kind of kills the mood for me. 4. Related to the pacing issues, dozens of side characters just kind of get thrown at you with little info about them.

They basically stuffed 2x the content of all of F/Z (and that's only vol 1, the shortest Horizon Vol so far) into 13 eps, so the pacing is no surprise pretty terrible. Same with character, the novel focus on 1 main chara and a couple minor ones per vol, so anime from only Vol 1 will not cover most of the side chara. The mood is one of the best part of the novel though, and it's inherited from Owari no Chronicle. Last part... well it's same way in the novel, but there isn't much illu in the novel, so... + Show Spoiler + ![]()

Much obliged. My japanese is... functional. I've been studying since the end of last year, and I passed JLPT Level 5 recently. I work with a teacher 2 hours a week, mainly using the Genki textbook series, and a bunch of other stuff my teacher cooks up. I asked for advice on how to improve my listening skills, and this was his suggestion; certainly i won't understand a lot of what is being said, but even understanding just a little is good exposure! Thanks everyone, I'll get back to you when I've watched a few episodes.

I like that the cast is pretty big, lots of fun characters, so more episodes for the same vols would've been golden. I really don't mind the switches between serious and comedy, and for some reason I really really like Toori. I do prefer him with his clothes on though... Letting tits/bodysuits ruin a show for you is a shame, by the way. As for Nate's mom... yeah. That's taking it too far, lol. Horizon sold very well, didn't it? I do want season 3... appearantly vol 3 is even more massive though, how many episodes do you think would be needed for it to be decently paced? Would 2-cour be enough? As for him rating it a 4, get on Elem's level, he gave it a 2.

I'd definitely recommend doing some extra studying to those 2 hours a week though, Use something like kanjidamage to learn some of the most commonly used kanji and finish off that Genki textbook (I didn't use that, but I've heard good things about it) and you'll be in an alright position. I'm hoping to go work over there when I finish university too. This is just from what I've been doing, but I struggled to learn much from anime really. Generally, I found that I'd learn a word from a book or something, and only then start picking it up in anime. It could be different for you, but if you're finding it hard to learn much then definitely go back to learning from books and then going back to the anime. Good luck
