If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

Has anyone a good Sci-Fi / Space Opera recommendation for me? If possible without mechs.

Seconding Spazer's recs and adding Galaxy Express 999 and Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

I recently finished GE999 and started Harlock.

100% agree with this recommendation and Spazer's aswell.

I'm nothing like an expert on their biographies but I'm pretty sure there's a lot of uh artistic license with their life stories (not talking about the idiosyncracies or the obviously made-up stuff) I guess to make the story more interesting lol

Watched Logh + Crest/Banner of Stars, and am watching Yamato 2199, Crest/Banner of Stars was very good and Logh is the best Anime I have ever seen (after some books maybe the best piece of art i have ever consumed). I espacially am looking for something which is similar to one of these.

Zetsuen no Tempest:
Even better atmosphere, perfect soundtrack, has many quotation of Shakespear and characters who DO something (probably the biggest problem of most story centered animes).

Too lazy to quote whoever it is from last page properly but...quoting from Shakespeare? If you like Shakespeare you should avoid it because it butchers whatever bullshit connection it was supposed to have with the Tempest. If you don't like Shakespeare you should avoid it because characters throw out meaningless quotes. Even Madoka's invocation of Faust was better than this, and that went literally nowhere. Characters that do something? What? Nothing happens in what can be regarded more Code Geass s2 than the actual thing.

The use of some plot device that throws logic out the window is just dumb and 'justifies' the author's use of having dumb plot twists. But doesn't make it less stupid to watch. The random Shakespeare quotes are just that, random. Although, I've never read Hamlet or The Tempest, so it's kind of hard to compare. Aika however, <3

Same studio, somewhat more technology based magical girls, and mysterious aliens sounds kinda like strike witches to me. Then again, it also sounds like power rangers. So basically yes, I do think they are similiar, but its also similiar to a lot of other shows. Strike witches is just most commonly brought up. Because no pants.

Vividred is about magical-science weapon wielding magical girls who don't wear pants, fighting against Alones (Aliens?), with flying devices strapped to their feet, and occasionally having yuri moments with each other.

1.) Except they do wear pants. And skirts. And garments on top of their underwear. I don't want to go through and take screenshots of every single episode showing this, since that idea sounds really pathetic and perverted, but its plain to see. Just look at the promo image for it. Skirt: check. Pants: check. Underwear: check (See henshin scenes). In Strike Witches they actually ran around with just a shirt and nothing but underwear. Clothing/people wearing clothing in Vividred is almost completely normal for anime, aside from their new uniforms have shorts rather than a skirt.

2.) It is not the same studio at all. Gonzo made Strike Witches, Vividred is Aniplex/A-1 Pictures, not sure which is the primary for it. Regardless, completely different studios.

3.) Mysterious aliens/monsters/etc is a common trope for practically all magical girl shows.

4.) As far as Technology is concerned, is far closer to Nanoha than Strike Witches. The magic in Strike Witches wasn't even "technology" for the most part, it was actually magic.

So, like I said, their only similarity is that they are magical girl anime. Which doesn't warrant everyone constantly comparing the two shows.

TY, and what you just describe doesn't sound like Strike Witches. It sounds like Nanoha. See above for the "no pants" point.

My post was meant as somewhat of a joke, but it's hard to deny that they sound similar. That said, it has similarities with many other shows, and I'm sure some of it is meant as a sort of homage to these shows.
Also, they don't wear pants normally (not talking about their transformation form).

By the way, Aniplex is not an animation studio, they are producers and distributors and own A-1 Pictures.

My bad, I meant its the same director. And yes, I agree it is like nanoha, its like a lot of magical girl series, strike witches just comes up for most people in recent memory, and that happens to be the one used as a way to describe the series by comparison.
