TV Anime in Japan is pretty screwy in the first place, tbh.
Unless you live in the Kanto region, some parts of Kansai region (near Osaka or Kyoto), or Aichi prefecture, you aren't getting most shows on TV.
Also, just because no one's going after you for it doesn't make it legal. :/

Grandparents/uncle live in Aichi, so go figure, lol. I'm still surprised they paid for TV considering how strict they were. The things you find out :3

Mm~... I think it's not as cut-and-dry as you might think, because of licensing stuff. Then again I watch raw, so there's another gray zone before licensing stuff. The way I see it is that most (Asian) countries don't enforce any sort of legal ground against pirating outside of the country, because that way they don't have to be expected to uphold anything when someone DOES license it. Unless they provide precedent I feel like it's essentially defacto acceptance of the act. That's why Japanese media on Youtube actually does get shut down pretty quick, but fansubbers tend not to hear anything (although granted YT goes into Japan itself, so even in that case it might just be them policing their own country).
And back when I scanslated (which was like 10+ years ago) there was also some international copyright thing that said the translations were owned by the translator, so then you get two separate entities in play for anything.
1) The raw media -> which I think is being accepted via inaction by Japanese companies and 2) The translations for the subs themselves -> which are owned by the translators but are privy to C&D by English licensing companies due to it being a free distribution of their content
I think the grounds that Japanese media companies could and should take if they gave a damn is that it's illegal because fansubbing reduces the value of licensing, but instead of stopping what's out there, they've gone the proactive route and started licensing content and releases at near-instant-release speed (CR)... so then at that point it becomes clear-cut illegal.
... if you get what I mean.
That said evidently my assumption that those channels were the same as UK/BBC was off the mark, so pirating~ :3 Hurr.
By acceptance via inaction I mean the same thing as the Aaron Swartz JSTOR thing, where the latter accepted that it was going on and ultimate even created specific language to prevent legal action to emphasize their acceptance of it.
All that said, I pirate (BR-releases and shit don't fall under any of that wishy-washyness) and don't harbor any delusions about it, lol.

Its entirely possible they don't. I think people not paying is/has been a major issue.
Also, if they live in Aichi, they don't get Fuji anyway huhuhu (they get Tokai)~

Even in US there is public television broadcast that you can pick up on your TV with an antennae. We used that shit to watch dope shows like Barney and Sesame Street and motherfucking Power Rangers before we had any of this newfangled cable shit.

US OTA is free yes.
Japanese OTA is encrypted and requires a B-CAS card to decrypt, which you're theoretically supposed to get by paying the licensing fees.

We do have "free" "over the air" channels -- mostly news stations and crap. The only cost is you getting the antenna and setting it up. I had a friend who only had OTA TV channels available because their parents refused to purchase cable cause it was a waste of money. Basic / Expanded basic cable is something like 60 bucks a month. I convinced my parents to drop it and get amazon prime instead (which all of us can mooch off of). + netflix + potentially hulu plus
and you are still spending far, far less than 700-800 bucks a year on TV and getting almost the same level of content.

OTA converted to digital like 5 years ago or something no?

On March 11 2013 11:52 ragz_gt wrote: There was public broadcast that you can pick up with antenna, but it's all converted digital from like 8 years ago. It's still the same, you just need a digital receiver / antenna instead of the old analog ones. This is what caused the whole "set top box" for old analog antennas controversy that kept delaying the switch to digital.

NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox are all free OTA and available in ~97% of the country.
This has been true for decades.
The US's switchover was in 2009, fwiw.

Even stuff on public TV (that you may or may not have to pay for) has commercials, right?

guys i have a confesson to make. i like to watch random clips of girls und panzer on youtube just to look at the comments. out of all the animes ive ever watched ive never seen so much nerdrage over this one. there are world of tanks and armchair historians deriding this anime constantly over how a short barrelled 75mm l/24 can penetrate the 3.1i inch frontal armour of a matila II X 100 for every tank fight combination (which apparently is unrealistic but what do i know).
girls und panzer one of the best animes of 2012. highly encourage you all to watch this gem. its just so fun and happy

Ever. As long as you avoid the autistic people who feel the need to argue over ridiculous stuff, it's pretty amusing.

I can only see demographic numbers for videos I've uploaded myself. Or are you talking about for specific videos and looking at their statistics?
