Looking at these lists, Mushishi is rated extremely highly overall. I dropped it after 2 episodes, but maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance.
+ Show Spoiler +It seemed destined to be very episodic. I figured it would be one vaguely dramatic and paranormal event after another and that the calm, competent, boring stranger would waltz in, solve the problem, and leave. I didn't see significant progress toward an overarching plot or much room for character development in the first two episodes, which is a shame because the art and production quality were quite high overall.
Anyone want to try to convince me to pick it back up again?
Sweet, a link with more lists hidden in it. Which one's yours? I don't see a "Southlight" in there. I'm eager to forgive you for inadvertently making me watch Fate/Stay Night by saying that anime should be watched in order of production. While I agree with you in general, my life would be better if I had skipped SN forever and just watched Zero.
Actually, I think F/Z would have been better if its creators hadn't watched F/SN.

Mushishi is indeed episodic. There is no overarching plot, purely episodic with minor ties going back and forth and very few characters aside from Ginko reappearing. There is no real character developement but as it goes one learns more of Ginko as a person and his beliefs regarding Mushi, humans and how it should be handled. In the start he is pretty much a mystery character.
And one of the bigger issues i have though is how you think that everything will just solve itself because the main character arrives. How about you actually keep watching? To me it feels like you just didnt give it enough of a try. Almost all stories are very beatutiful and interesting + Show Spoiler +and not every one is cheerful or has a good ending, which is one of the greatest appeals with it for me. It is very clear with showing that the world can be a harsh place, with or without Mushi.
Mushishi is by far my favourite anime, the only one where I wish there was a score beyond 10 reserved only for such godlike masterpieces. To have you just spit on it without actually giving it a proper try (considering your reasons for dropping it) is just an insult imo.

Sounds like he wanted something with a overall plot rather than episodic. If he didn't like the first two episodes at all I doubt he will like the rest. While Ill agree with you Mu shi shi is awesome it really isnt for everyone.

Haha indeed. You dont even rate anything!
Also people rating Bakemonagatari and Nisenmonagatari confuse me. That show seemed like alot of things were lost in translation unless you spoke Japanese lol.

After a while though I noticed I was watching something and thinking about what I should rate it the whole time, instead of just trying to enjoy the anime. On top of that I was also kind of in disagreement with myself on if I should rate based on my personal enjoyment or based on objective quality. Eventually I just said screw it and stopped rating :/
Some anime I had rated 10:
Cowboy bebop Clannad : AS Suzumiya Haruhi no shoushitsu FMA:B

Seeing some of the longer MAL lists makes me sad. :[
Ah well, I have a decently high amount of anime watched.

No interest in marathoning stuff at the moment and I'd call the PTW list a joke at this point. Also a pair of 79% compats in those posted, but ferrose still #1 at 84%.edit: finally filled in some blank numbers maxie at 82.3% ferrose at 82.5% to add another bit to the nonsense, 1990 #1 for me http://mal.oko.im/evantrees

Alot of my longer / older series (Dragonball, Saint Seiya, and unfortunately, lots and lots Sailor Moon) are evening anime before I came to US, without those I prob lose 3000 eps or more.

I asked because my initial impression was so vastly different from peoples' ratings. I wanted to see if I missed the point and should give it another try with a different outlook. A lot of factors can affect my enjoyment or understanding of a thing, and another person's insight is the most powerful of these factors.
Mushishi did not, by itself, spark my interest and pull me into another world, but that doesn't mean it's a bad anime or even that I won't end up enjoying it as much as you did. I'm actually a bit interested in maybe giving it another go now.

What actually happened: I was going to watch FZ based on recommendations, Southlight recommends watching stuff in order of production (unrelated conversation), I end up discovering that FSN is produced before FZ. Pretty much your typical tragedy, it wasn't his fault, but I'm blaming him anyway because reasons.
Was the FSN visual novel much (much) better then? I've never actually read a VN, though I'm not opposed to the idea...

FSN VN is an all time classic while anime is an abomination. Basically the anime picked the worst route from the game and totally butchered it with a chainsaw
But if someone never played a VN before it's a bit hard to get into. FSN actually require you to choose stuff somewhat. In addition, it's an (very light) eroge, though there is an all age ver.

This is the complete Fate Stay Night game, Let's Read style. I've both played the VN and the LR, and this LR is quite possibly the best way for someone who doesn't want to muck around with torrents and patches to learn about Fate Stay Night.
These are some of the video clips embedded into the LR:

Seorin has also done Tsukihime. His censorship style is hilarious.
