If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

Yeah... I used to read manga on my computer back when I don't have access to anime. But now, only my favorite, favorite, favorite series motivate me to read the manga version of them.

On a side note, I find manga tends to have better story. But still, very tedious to read.

My favorite manga/anime/series:

Full Moon wo Sagashite was one of the very first anime I ever watched. Didn't actually finish it the first time around since it was still going and my friend only transferred so many episodes. Got around to finishing it years later, saw the plot unfold, and appreciated it even more.

full moon sagashite is drawn out (fillers in the anime I think?) and a bit childish. But my god, it's sad. I cry like a little bitch every time i hear the 'sore demo utatai' song from the soundtrack.

the anime was a bit drawn out, but it was made as the manga was still going iirc, so past a few of the early episodes is where it diverged. personally, i really enjoyed the manga and felt it had more impact than the anime because it had a more serious tone, but the anime was still really good, especially having the songs to listen to.

Testie, season 2 ended at like no more than chapter 130, chapter 261 showed up today. There is more than enough material.

Hopefully they'll dump Nagi and focus on Hina and Aa-tan and Maria-san.

EDIT - Missed this.

Ah, Ecael,

New chapters of Bungaku Shoujo just got scanlated. I stand corrected about Konoha's disposition. By this point, he has shown his irrational fear for being on rooftop. The post traumatic syndrome part of him is quite overt, now. Though, him saying that his death would be just deserts for not understanding Miu (and making a parallel with the current case) is still kind of... angsty, for the lack of a better term to describe it.

Also, since I don't really want to research up Ningen Shikaku, but there are so many references to him, would watching Aoi Bungaku suffice in understanding those references?

You are better off asking like Shauni on his opinion on Aoi Bungaku, I didn't follow it in particular since all that did was make me want to read the original, it didn't inspire me too much as an anime on its own. That said, I did watch the No Longer Human part, although not very carefully. I recall that the events are pretty accurate in terms of how it reflects the book, so you should probably be fine watching it.

Most of the references to books in the novels are in quotations (possibly twisted to fit the plot's needs) or in Touko's explanations of the situation (even though as a Japanese student you almost had to have at least passing knowledge of No Longer Human, it doesn't do too well to assume). So if they don't do the former, they'll probably have the latter beefed up, you should do fine even if you don't have good knowledge of the work.

About Konoha in vol 1, he is pretty bad then, and honestly his outlook doesn't really improve for a while. He has some pretty immediate redemption by the end of vol 1, but in general, when things involve Miu in any way, he turns really bad...well, the rest I'll wait to discuss with you when at least vol 1 wraps up, you'll be missing a lot of things until then. On a completely unrelated note, did they do the 4koma specials? I had a good laugh at how even there, they make fun of Touko for how flat she is. It is almost a rule in the novels that every few lines of descriptions of Touko will have a mandatory reminder to the readers that she is flat. Why, she is in a play in men's clothing? Amazing, that chest doesn't make anyone think twice even though it is a female playing a male role. Maki-senpai wants Touko to pose nude? Nah, no need to watch, she is flat, etc etc.

I am currently stopped at the beginning of vol 4 to pace myself a little, since vol 3 ended with some dark and terrible secrets revealed. Too bad it looks like the theatrical release is only going to cover vol 1 at this rate. Oh, and I rather dislike Nanase's character design for anime, thought the light novel illustration was much better. A shame that no one subbed that 15min promo ova though, just dugged that up over the weekend. Touko-senpai is amazing, watch a revival of her popularity in the kono light novel ga sugoi poll this year.

Bungaku shoujo? Is it similar No Longer Human? By the way, I read the book of the latter one too, and while it was good I can honestly say I preferred the anime (If I have to compare =P). The book was very short and flat, it didn't describe things in detail or leave things to interpretation, but I suppose it was meant to be that way because of the biographical structure. Most of it is covered in the anime, and pretty well done at that. The voice actor for the main role didn't fit in the other chapters of Aoi Bungaku but it was perfect for No Longer Human. It displayed the raw and unsettling hopelessness in the book well.

Whose translation did you read, Shauni? I'd recommend Donald Keene's translation, man produce brilliant translations, too bad I never had a chance to take a class under him.

EDIT - Now that I think about it, I don't think there were other translators, in English anyway.

Bungaku Shoujo is a light novel series (w/ manga, now turning anime) that has a major selling point in incorporating old classics into each vol in some way, vol 1 used No Longer Human as a base.

Manga is pretty cheap if you can read some japanese - if you buy a lot it's around $10 per volume shipped from amazon.co.jp. Hayate is especially easy, like a lot of them it's completely furigana (sound characters beside all kanji). Obviously you need to know some Japanese, but it's really worth it.

On the topic of Hayate, another season would be awesome. S2 was really good plot-wise and there's more coming up!

If we ignore how shipping is $20 and like additional $5 per vol? Amazon.jp is still fixed on using international express only no, exchange rate has also been hurt lately.

I tanked the whole of Hajime no Ippo in the last week (both seasons). While the story line was a bit bleak, I loved the character dynamics and the humour. Takamura is the man ! Love these kind of animes. Reminded me of Great Teacher Onizuka a lot. Any other animes like that out there?

Prince of Tennis, its pretty humourus and the character development is pretty good.
Hunter x Hunter - funny, great story, great char development

yahhh i really liked this anime. It was pleasing to see that a non-gay anime came out that season. The story line is fun, its kinda like LOTR and the fighting is really well-animated. I second your recommendation~

Kinokuniya is good for Japanese books (manga included), if you live in supported countries.

I actually liked 2nd GIG a bit more than Season 1 because it seemed tied together a bit better.

Yeah, I try to drop by its Manhattan store every so often, still so bloody expensive. You know if their book request function will charge extra for shipping?

Well the actual manga is $5 or so, shipping is $3.50, so it does end up at around $10 each if you buy heaps. Sure, the shipping charge is a lot of it, but it beats the hell out of $15-$20 1 year late translations ...

Huh, where are you shipping to? Far as shipping to US/NYC goes, it has always been $20 for international express, which has additional charges about $5 per additional article.
