for me it feels like accel world is trying to push as many cliches into a story as possible. Episode 5 is the prime example so far.

+ Show Spoiler +you should read it all cause the anime goes way other directions than the manga. after i watched the anime i just thought this couldn´t be the ending so i searched the manga for the end of the anime and well yeah i ended up with reading the whole manga from the beginning and it wasn´t a waste of time at all :D happy reading

I started at chapter 33 which was almost identical to the anime, and happens right before where the anime does it's own thing. I'm sure there are a lot of smaller things that may make it worth reading the manga from the start but I'm at chapter 48 at the moment and I just want to read the rest of it now. So no backtracking for me, full speed ahead towards awesomeness.

May I ask for an answer based on personal preference then? I now know that I don't have to, which is good, but I'd still like to know what people think.

Like Elem said, if you've already seen EVOL and want some more, you can look into the prequel. EVOL takes place 12000 years after the first series. If you haven't seen EVOL yet, you don't have to unless you have a lot of time on your hands to 1. find somewhere to download the first season, and 2. spend the time to watch all 26 episodes of it. If you have time, then by all means go and watch the prequel before EVOL.
There are some references to the first series, but nothing big until the last few episodes of EVOL. None of it requires you to have watched the first one. You'll just get more enjoyment out of the references, whereas those that didn't, won't think anything of it.

Should you watch Genesis before EVOL? Yes. Production order is the intended watching order. The makers of the show intended for you to watch Genesis first, and then EVOL. Not to mention, EVOL is a sequel, and events in Genesis directly affect EVOL's plot. Now, do you need to watch Genesis before EVOL? No, not really. EVOL can be enjoyed fine without having watched Genesis. In fact, other than me, only maybe 1 or 2 other people in this entire thread has legitimately watched Genesis, yet plenty of people here have been watching EVOL just fine. The connection is there, but due to the time frame between them, the events of the first series are more or less treated as a legend/myth, with more direct connections surfacing later.
EVOL is alot better than Genesis, but I still enjoyed it. Its up to you.

I think I'll give Genesis a shot. In case it's too boring or whatever I could still try out EVOL afterwards

I have to agree with you. I was so into the original series and going into Brotherhood I had high hopes. It was a bit of a let down for me. I love getting more story, but it just slowly killed what I loved so much about the original.

I urge you to reconsider once enough time has passed. As I said before, I found Brotherhood to be better.
To each his own, I guess. You won't know if you don't try it though.

IMO Brotherhood is definitely better than the original. Someone quoted my post about it earlier, but basically, the first half of the Original is better than the first 10~ episodes of Brotherhood (the part where they share plot), but the next 50-60 episodes of Brotherhood is better than the last half of the Original (the part where they split).
Both go in really different directions, so its not like one is a replacement for the other. I say that if you liked the original, and just recently watched it, take a break for a while, and then watch Brotherhood in like half a year or something. Treat them independently and form your own conclusion.

depends... first is "grimdarker" lol, but the ending was not satisfying for me, second series is less of a mindfuck, but epic as hell (big fights, more badass characters) i like the second one more, because its the series the original author had in mind, very much like hellsing ultimate vs hellsing <.<
