How is it non-standard? I call it shoujo because it is labeled as such on every scan site out there, and is published in LaLa, a shoujo magazine in Japan.

If you don't go off the literal label, what would you consider shoujo and shounen then?

@Requizen: If its published in a Shoujo magazine, then its Shoujo, you are right. But slice of Life=shoujo? Unfortunately, not necessarily... While I would like to agree with you about how you classify genres, unfortunately all that matters is where it is published, and who its targeted at. For example, K-On! is apparently listed as Seinen because of what magazine it airs in, and that mostly men follow it.

Well, that's fair. SoL can mean a lot of things though. However, experience usually shows that the comedy ones are generally all-audience or male oriented, while the drama ones are generally female oriented. It can vary from series to series, but I'm talking on a general, overall scale.

I wasn't talking about Kaichou wa Maid-sama anymore, though you're right when you label it as shoujo because it is labeled as such. It is, however, non-standard to label romance as "usually shoujo" and "sometimes shounen" or SoL as shoujo or badass charas as shounen (Suzuka would be shoujo, so would Aria, but if I think that Akari is badass then it would be shounen). So the importance of detailed context comes up, but not everyone is willing to explicit every piece of context (and I will fully admit to this). At that point, because it becomes incredibly vague people use the labels as the end all, which makes for really dead discussion.

Which is fair, labels are hard. I could say more on the matter, but you're right, it's pretty much impossible to have a definition. Easier to go on a series by series basis, I guess.

Considering that both K-On and Berserk are both Seinens, I'm pretty sure that labels like such are mostly pointless for discussion. Better to classify anime/manga based on how they are told/presented (action, comedy, romance, etc), rather than what magazine/demographic they may be aimed at.

Also, the targeted demographic is not necessarily what ends up following that show. For example, K-ON! was meant for older men but it has almost gone mainstream. There is an equal distribution of men and women. And the age groups that it appeals to are as young as 10 years old to as old as 40.

The amount of ¥¥ that kyoani raked in from the movie reflects this reality.

That's why you should just classify anime very generally by their genre and evaluate then by their own merits. What magazine carries the original work is becoming more and more irrelevant.

I'm not a K-On! fan but I'm pretty sure we can suppose that there are plenty of older men in Japan who like cute high school girls enough to buy products exclusively about them and their attractiveness. Why do you think phenomena like enjo kousai exist?

Anyways I must agree with Sent and Necro in that demographic labels are some of the least informative as to an anime or manga's actual content.

Anyone else think that the pacing for Guilty Crown was too fast? I think it would of been better if they pace it out more and let character developed more imo.
