Oda has stated one time that he really regrets Shanks losing an arm. So it is probably the one thing that you can't really explain in-universe. Except maybe that Shanks is a bit of an airhead. | ||

Except maybe that Shanks is a bit of an airhead. it's a rumor, oda never stated that. still in the timeline, it seems like a mistake, seeing as shanks was already well known (therefor strong) in that time and shouldn't have been caught off guard. | ||

A lot of manga go for the big guns in their first chapter to draw readers in. Also, Oda could have used this as a "pilot" chapter for the actual story. He demonstrates the full range of OP: jokes, battles, adventure and drama. If shanks never lost his arm then maybe this manga could have never even made it this far. | ||

So if other strong people have done it would not be unusual for Roger to have done so as well. | ||
