For his own motivation it also makes sense, since he aims to get multiple strong fruits. Burgess defeating Luffy is at least possible and would show us that the straw hats are not yet the strongest people in the world.
Bronze Kyros being picked up by Gol D. Roger is a nice find, didn't even think that far. It does sound likely. Luffy getting beaten by one of blackbeards flunkies (and not even his strongest one) would be dumb Luffy should be stronger then one of blackbeards underlings

Luffy getting beaten would make Blackbeard a credible threat. So far nothing has been shown to really challenge the straw hats after timeskip.

Calling him a flunkie/underling is underestimating his power.
Burgess vs luffy would be a long hard victory for luffy, if he does win.

if Luffy loses to some underling of blackbeard it invalidates the 2 year time skip since that means hes still weak as fuck and cant do jack shit

Well considering BB will be the final boss (most likely), then luffy losing to his first division commander is expected given that straw hats shouldn't be at that level yet with the amount of time One Piece has left.

Blackbeard vs Luffy needs to build up more tension. That's why I don't think that Burgess will be completely defeated. Not even Moria-like. If It wasn't Oda I'd say that someone steps in when Burgess has the upper hand. There are lots of players on Dressrosa.

It's very possible, Oda uses this storytelling technique as well. Build up tension between two powerful parties beyond point of no return until an unseen 3rd party saves the day. Ex: Shanks after Marineford, Kuzan after Punk Hazard, Dragon after Loguetown.
Personally I am not too fan of this, it always feels like a letdown.
Actually I am very intrigued because I don't think Oda will do this right after Punk Hazard. Moreover, there is no way that Burgess will get defeated at this point of the story and since Oda put so much emphasis on how BB crew is looking for powerful fruits, he will not back down for a silly reason.
I see only two outcomes: Burgess get the fruit so we can all hate BB even more, or someone like Cavendish manage to steal / eat the fruit and then we have one more significant player to consider in the story.

Burgess will definitely not get defeated, and I don't see Luffy losing a big battle so soon after the timeskip either so yeah probably someone will intervene and prevent the fight, like maybe fujitora ( if it's him or if he/she comes later) steps in and burgess runs.

just wondering - how would you guys rate Skypiea?

Compared to the other arcs ofc. The final battle was really drawn out, but I actually loved the concept... an elemental-class logia user, who possibly could be almost as strong as the admirals (unlikely but hey), but found a single natural enemy in an under-leveled Luffy. Also the idea that the sky folks didn't understand Rubber was really, really clever, which made for an epic Enel-face upon realization.
Honestly loved the arc, especially because it was such a clever idea with the Columbus concept, and with the light concepts of God. Left a lot of memorable moments too (flying upstream, octopus balloon, enormous snake, clouds). Also really introduced the power of elemental-class fruits.

Regarding Skypiea, one aspect of the arc many times overlooked is that the journey, drawn out though it may be, allows time for Robin to become part of the crew. Considering she joins pretty much right beforehand and then leaves for a while after Water 7, the time spent in Skypiea is incredibly meaningful for her. Without that arc, there would not have been such a level of tension (or as justifiable of a reason) for the rest of the Strawhat gang to foray into Enies Lobby.

Yea I still liked it but it was the end of my like 200 ep marathon so I was pretty tired and it being drawn out made me kinda mad. It did progress a lot of things though.

Epic villain, great backstory - Montblanc Norland and Calgara story is the best "flashback" story in One Piece imo. Plenty of cool stuff introduced (dials, Nami's waver). Some of the funniest moments in One Piece (just watch some youtube clips...). Very interesting characters like Gan Forr, Wiper, and that crazy giant snake.
I agree it was longer than it needed to be. Still one of the best arcs in One Piece.
