I wouldn't underestimate Blackbeard since he did manage to give shanks his scar before he even got his first Devil Fruit. Also, keep in mind, this is when Shanks was already an adult and not some no-name apprentice. BB also fought Ace at a severe disadvantage and won. Ultimately, the only people that managed to "dumpster" on him are Sengoku, Whitebeard, and Magellan, and these are some of the strongest characters in the series. | ||

If anything he had a major element of surprise with being able to negate Ace's powers and Ace didn't seem to know how to properly deal with it. | ||

While it's not officially confirmed, it's heavily implied that the true power of the Yami Yami no mi exerts itself in darkness. This is why Blackbeard couldn't just let Ace's flame attacks pass through him. Daylight shining on him is the equivalent of throwing water on Crocodile, making him corporeal. This is why Blackbeard needed a blanket around himself and Whitebeard to block out the light to steal his fruit. Thematically, this is also why Blackbeard as a character never sleeps. His true powers only activate at night, hence his disadvantage when fighting Ace during the day. | ||

He doesn't have the ability to let things pass through because he sucks them in but he still takes damage. | ||

Blackbeard did mention that he has to absorb the pain from attacks, but he didn't explicitly specify whether that's only the case during the day or also at night. It could be wrong but to me it ties everything about Blackbeard, like the tangibility, the blanket, and the insomnia together nicely. Also, it leaves room for a truly epic awakening, where he can use his darkness to turn the day to night and gain a massive powerup. | ||

This feeds into the theory that the final battle will take place at night since the Minks are obviously on Luffy's side and need a full moon. Blackbeard turns the battle into night with his awakening and then realizes he just brought out a full moon and also gives Luffy's side a power-up. | ||
