On the Sky Island arc you'd see each "boss" right during the battles, without previous introductions. Well, I guess on CP9 arc he did this introductions too, but he never showed the powers before the battles. Also, incoming power up for Hordy. Called it. Hordy is now the badassest of all badass. Hooooooooooooooooooly crap. And Luffy decided not to go or what...? No way Jinbei could actually beat Luffy. Could he...?

edit: + Show Spoiler + Wow wtf, now Luffy can kill Hody and come out just fine, making the fishmen love humans right? .-. Also, Van der Dekken did the most awesome thing possible. That boat is going head-on on Shirahoshi, and Luffy is TOTALLY crushing it. Or Zoro, since he has the ability to cut boats now. I'm loving this.

I think Oda's trying to slow down the power-ups so it doesn't become like Bleach. You know, show that there's still a lot of strong people out there, and Luffy still has a ways to go.

Afterwards, luffy trained on his own and got stronger. Reasonably you could say Luffy has now surpassed Dark King Raleigh, someone who fights evenly with kizaru. Oda is very good at making powerups reasonable and in time, but luffy is REALLY strong right now. Zoro is probably shichibukai level now himself after training with mihawk. them fighting anything less than a shichibukai pirate is kind of weak imo. I mean, what if blackbeard started taking pills? its just a lame way to create enemy imo

You know, show that there's still a lot of strong people out there, and Luffy still has a ways to go. Well this is a problem with all super hero type deals, i mean at one point superman could blow out a sun, this is why marvel universe has been restructured what 4 5 times now? I don't think oda is going to allow something like a time and space altering mutant or anything quite like that to debuff luffy so he has to be careful in presenting new power. And i mean he did a good job in structuring the world having the most powerful be away from luffy for the most part in the early chapters ie higher ups in the world government and other more powerful pirates. He even made sure to stress that whitebeard was in a severely weakened state from his prime and was still able to take on heads of the world government quite well. And so he's near the peak of what is allowed by giving luffy haki so now he has to come up with reasons for why he isn't at the top and slowly build him to that as he still has the whole grand line to go though.
