Dad is an ex-Shinigami captain, Mom is a pure-blood Quincy from a very traditional and high-standing family.
Mom protects Dad from a Hollow created by Aizen and co. during their experiments, Mom gets injured and may die because it seems the Hollow is tearing at her. Urahara has a solution and lets Dad sacrifice his powers in order for the shinigami powers to balance out the hollow inside Mom.
Dad and Mom fall in love, Ichigo happens, inherits Quincy, Shinigami and Hollow powers from his parents. When Mom dies (because the Quincy big boss drained people's powers from afar to strengthen himself, and she lost them as she was fighting Grand Fisher, leading to her death, tough luck), there's no more Hollow to suppress so Dad gets his powers back.
Ichigo learns that at the same as the fact that Zangetsu was his Quincy powers and not his Shinigami powers, as "they" (Quincy powers) feared that Ichigo would put himself in danger if he awakened and drew upon the Shinigami powers. Turns out he's doing well, so there's no need to suppress anymore, and now Ichigo has a new dual-wielding Zanpakuto to symbolise his dual nature. And of course his inner Hollow is still in there somewhere.

Thanks for that explanation Alaric. The one thing that is still bothering me... where does the event of Ichigo's dad stepping down from captainhood fall into the chronology of what we learned about the past? It seems like retcon that he didn't show up in any of the flashback stories but now suddenly we are told he was ostensibly there... unless this happened a really long time ago.

More or less a few years before Ichigo is born (eg. right after he saves Mom's life with Urahara's help), he had to resign anyway since losing his powers meant he couldn't carry out a captain's duties anymore. Hitsugaya took his place at that point.
Oh, the missing tidbit is that Mom was Uryuu's dad's fiancee, until shit hit the fan obviously, and that both guys met each other as Mom collapsed and they wondered how to save her (right before Urahara pops in and gives them (and readers) explanations).

You can theorize all you want, go ahead. Just make sure to not use rational justifications too much, else it won't be close to what Kubo will unveil later.
Joking aside, Komamura's human design is indeed, badass as fuck, haha. That's the one redeeming feature of Bleach, drawings are cool :D

It's easy for your characters to look good when you don't draw backgrounds.
Yotsuba&! is a million times prettier in my eyes. Such intricate detail of scenery. That's where it's at.
Reading Bleach is like reading a collection of character posters that's tied together by the occasional nonsense dialogue and sometimes smaller panels.

Shin Angyo Onshi, Berserk, and Vagabond would probably fit the bill then. Those ones are gorgeous art. Too bad one's over and the other two get updated like, twice a year.
Bleach is "clean" art in terms of the characters and their design. I always appreciated that from Kubo, since drawing movement and perspective is incredibly hard to perfect. Of course, the story went to shit after the Aizen reveal.
I really get sad when I imagine how Bleach could've turned out, even if it followed the basic parameters of the story after the Aizen plot twist. Like, the Vaizards were initially very interesting but the subplot of their interest in Ichigo was very weak. The flashback of their creation was cool, but then the characters became a bit corny (ooh former captains ooh). Hueco Mundo was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make a fantastic arc, but Kubo botched it so badly. Orihime subplot went nowhere... Chad powers subplot vanished after one fight... Comedic and noble hollows, badly designed world (which was a strong point of the Soul Society Arc because you had this undercurrent of "too little freedom" or "too elitist rules" going on). Only real decent part of that was Grimmjaw and his Ichigo obsession. Even the Espada sucked balls.
Ah well. Life goes on. Kubo continues to disappoint. Bleach story sucks but fights are cool and all.
