The Dragonball z live action movie was so bad it caused Akira toriyama to go back to work out of shamehate of what his work became. Anime is not going to become blockbuster fare.

The old republic is rich ground for non jedi/sith character related stories. That being said you could do the 501st legion Band of brothers style and it would be great.

Maybe video game movies will finally come out of the stone age. There's so many great stories and worlds to use but I guess it's hard to take something built around interactive gameplay and turn it into pure narrative. I'm going to keep dreaming that someone makes a good planescape torment adaptation some day.

What about the Sanderson books? There's a load of potential right there :D I heard there was some talks about a Mistborn tv series. The Stormlight universe is also so rich.

Novels should never become movies. They should always become at least a 10 season series that follow the source material.

Books are rich and deep and movies cannot capture so many beloved intricacies in their short time frame.
Anime is not going to become blockbuster fare.

Edge of Tomorrow was one of the better movies released in the last ten years or so and it was based off a manga. It probably would have been even better had it followed the source material a little more closely. But Hollywood always has to Hollywood shit up in the last 30-15 minutes of a movie sadly.
Social Justice is a fools errand. May all the adherents at its church be thwarted. Of all the religions I have come across, it is by far the most detestable.

I found this very funny.

In any case, No Country for Old Men, Gone Girl and Edge of Tomorrow are examples of recent movies that are both good films and book adaptations.

e: They're also different enough from each other that it's not really a genre specific thing either.

A lot of great movies have some source material, i don't understand people who think this is a bad thing. If you already know the source material, sure i guess it is nothing new for you. But you won't know every soure material anyway.
The worst case the movie is shit but people learn about the novel and read that and enjoy it, best case the film is great and now you have two interpretations of the same story.

"Argo" was quite good. It had almost nothing to do with what happened ... but it was entertaining. I think part of the reason the 1980 Lake Placid gold medal in ice hockey was so celebrated was due to how embarrassing it was to put up with the Iran hostage thing for 444 days. "Miracle" was reasonably close to reality.

Interestingly, a few years after the Iran Hostage Caper.. .there was a big 4 game series of baseball games that drew 200,000 people to Yankee Stadium in New York. The Canadian national anthem was boo-ed mercilessly. So its not like Americans "forgot" what a group of Canadians did for their country in Iran some 20+ years earlier. They never knew in the first place.

That's spreading the material far too thin. I think the best method is a miniseries. Full on tv series have a tendency to just spin their wheels forever. Monster of the week, or kidnap the heroes yet again. Too many timeslots and no definite ending leads to lazy story writing. Having a defined number of episodes to tell your story so that you can actually plan a beginning, middle, and end is a far superior method to adapting novels for film.

Mortal Engines could have been told in a tight 12x 1 hour episode series, one season per book, and it would have been amazing. Also hideously expensive but that’s just how it goes.

I just watched Detective Pikachu. Its not going to change the world and its aimed for kids but its good I think. It has the soul of the show but with a lot of reimagining for a movie that can actually be made.

Solid 7/10 on a scale of 5 being average.

Jesus christ though the sonic trailer is an abomination on the big screen. Theres also this other movie called "the sun is also a star" which pissed me off unreasonably on name alone. I don't judge a book by its cover. but i'll judge the author based on the books name and judge the book from there.

Who wouldn’t want to see a live action DBZ movie?
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

I think the big problem with book adaptions is expectation. Fans of the book will expect things to go according to their imagination and that hardly ever works. The movies based on books that get good reviews are mostly ones that the movie audience didn't know. But if you put money on the table for a license might as well use the license for marketing, right?
Also agreed that time is a major constrict.

Watched "The Wandering Earth" on Netflix the other day. Biggest piece of chinese propaganda but entertaining. Visuals were good when not CGI heavy. Acting was spotty but bearable. None of thr characters are memorable. I'd probably give it 5/10 just for being different enough and holding most of my attention.

Next Star Wars movies will be written by Benioff and Weiss. No mention of Rian Johnson. Interesting that Bob Iger is handing out this info and not Kathleen Kennedy. Apparently, Kathleen Kennedy was never announced when she entered the stage of Star Wars Celebration.. she just appeared. LOLOLOL. Kennedy needs to take lessons from Vince Mcmahon on how to be a "Heel Promoter".

https://www.superherohype.com/news/448395-next-star-wars-movies-confirmed-to-be-from-game-of-thrones-creators

Speaking at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the next batch of Star Wars movies the company will be released will be from the series penned by Game of Thrones creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Regarding the break between the next Star Wars film and the planned 2022 movie, Iger said: “We’re hard at work already, but we felt three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to gear up for the next film’s release."

It was revealed last year that the pair would write and produce a new series of Star Wars films, separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the previously announced trilogy that is in development from Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, previously said. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

No word has been revealed about when Rian Johnson’s trilogy will arrive, but Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on December 20 of this year.

I am not a big fan of their work on the current GoT season (or the recent ones in particular, to varying degrees ofc), but i still think that they at least have the capabilities to create something worthwhile here. If anything i think the SW project and their new HBO series (confederate) are big reasons why they kinda failed with GoT now.
Still funny to read that Kennedy quote when most of these qualities come from the source material, not D&D. (even though adapting it also takes skill in these fields for sure)

Their work on GoT is technically impressive, but they shouldn't be left to come up with their own material.

Haha so they confirm the meme, Beinoff and Weiss take the reigns of the next trilogy, ouch. They need to hit the ground running because if the first one is bad that is it for me i'll be not watching them in the cinema at least. Plus for them personally, the hate they must receive online and such for how bad GoT season 8 is being dubbed online must be hard to take lol. Then from that universe they jump into the Star Wars universe another globally toxic fanbase if you mess things up xD
