Yeah, you can take a raft around, there are hidden paths, etc. Climbing is possible too, but extremely hard as you would imagine. Even though there are 19 castles, when a castle is deserted its gate is completely sealed off and is no easier to get through than any other section of hte wall (if not harder).
He could have simply come back from the scouting as normal, and then left the castle afterwards.
Don't know, if this has been posted yet, but as it is pure awesome:
At the curret discussion: I was under the impression that the Nightwatch learnt about the deserter only after he was caught and beheaded by the Starks.
Fantastic little video that existed long ago, and don't know if it's been posted here before.
I thought it was brilliant, and wish to share. I'm not a person who watches movies, or even youtube videos more than once, but I really had to watch this at least twice (not including the 3rd time just now).
Taking the advantage of the downtime to look up recommended GoT videos on youtube. When your gold runs out, what the fuck you gonna do? Damn it feels good to be a Lannister.

So I just recently finished the third book... People are always wearing cloaks of their house colours, or dublets with their sigils painted on them, or wearing armor of their house colours... I dunno, I guess its not really big, just realized that it wasn't really incorperated into the show much. Maybe cloaks don't look as cool as I imagine they would.

I think you should make a difference between cloaks worn for festivals and the like and cloaks worn for travel.

Either way, there was cloaks all the time. Does the City Watch have gold cloaks? I don't remember anymore. and why don't people wear cloaks anymore? They're fucking badass. I want a cloak.
I just finished 1st book after watching whole season, and i gotta say that once again it is better to read books, than watch the film/series based on it. I would enjoy first season much more if i knew all the background info, stories of characters included in book/books.

City watch had golden cloaks
people dont wear cloaks because they get in the way of most work and look fairly stupid on untrained bodies
