Fact is shows like this sell pretty well on DVD, while sitcoms tend to be sold into syndication better.
Will this show go 7 seasons? Nah most likely not. Will it get to tell the story up till the end ASOS(the third book), god i hope so. Getting through that book would make the most sense, as it ends the least cliffhangerish and offers ample conclusions to some story arcs.
At the end of the day, as an avid fan of the book series, I'm glad for every season of this show that gets made.
I have never seen that HBO regretted canceling Rome. I'd like to see a source or something? Was it from Bruno Heller or Chris Albrecht? Expensive is expensive is expensive. I also pointed at Deadwood, which, excuse the heresy, is a much better program than Rome or A Game of Thrones - it's easier for programmers to make money on Entourage even if shows like Game of Thrones are great.
Edit: JUST saw the warning at the top, sorry I'll edit this, I thought this was where we could post stuff with spoilers versus the other thread which is spoiler free.
Yeah, nothing can be salvaged from my post, my bad.
I can see this working, but would love for HBO to make some torrent/download thing for people outside the US as I would love to pay for the entertainment they're giving me, and also help support the shows that I'm watching. We know that on TV, they make around 5-6 million viewers, in downloads they make 20-30 times that....if they found a way to make money from downloading like embedding ads that can't be skipped, or charge like $10 a season/month for downloads, I think many of us would PAY it to see our favorite shows actually continue to the end!
HBO make media viewer for HBO only files? would be EPIC!
I feel bad that I've been downloading the episodes now. What can I do, though? I don't have HBO. :x
The people cast so far look surprisingly good. As someone said, Brienne doesnt look as ugly as she's supposed to be, but if she's that tall, I'm sure they'll make her work.
I really hope their budget is increased, though. There's a few battles in both ACOK and ASOS that I'd really like to see. Especially that one big battle near the end of ACOK. The big one, that has fire. And swords. And arrows. And people dying. I'm sure you know which one I mean. + Show Spoiler +
Theres no way that can be considered a spoiler -.-

just....stop mentioning the books. God, why would you even risk it just go to the OTHER THREAD which was set up for this exact purpose

So they cancelled due to the partnership with BBC ending and then in August 2006 they released S1 DVD. So, despite me not finding an article you can kinda see how they mighty regret cancelling Rome.

Because the OTHER THREAD assumes I have read all of the books, when I havnt even read half of them. And since the show is based off of books, its impossible to not mention them at all. Especially when talking about casting. "Oh, yeah, she'll be great with Brienne. No, I don't know who Brienne is because I havnt read the books, but I can tell she'll just fit the role perfectly . . ."

They won't do that because they're afraid it will cannibalize their earnings from their core business.
The guy they got to play Davos looks just like the guy I pictured in my head as Stannis and the guy they casted as Stannis looks just like Davos to me lol. Brienne I always pictured as Aveline from Dragons age 2. I think they nailed that.

BBC gave about $800,000 an episode, definitely not marbles. But, if I recall my numbers right, Rome was $6 million dollars an episode and was supposed to be a miniseries. Rome was definitely profitable, you'd never run a program that wasn't, but was it so profitable as to be regrettable? I've never heard an announcement saying that. I'm not saying you're wrong but my comparison of Game of Thrones production costs and potential longevity to Rome's and Deadwood's was fine.
Wasn't Rome cancelled because basically there was nothing left to film? Rome was based on historical facts with a slight twist, but by the end of the 2nd season Octavian was Emperor and he proceded to rule for 30+years without major problems. Hard to continue a factual story on that

No, while you might be right, Bruno Heller wanted the show to continue. He had lofty goals for the show: source.
EDIT: The same source says that HBO executives thought cancelling the show was a mistake. So there's our source, Abysus!

The 2nd season was written the way it was because the series was being cancelled, the originally planned for things to play out MUCH slower.
Back to the topic, TY for the gamescon panel link, glad all that stuff got uploaded, couldn't figure out how to watch live in Canada >.> Can you tell me how far into book 3 it spoils something? I'm on like page 60 of the third book so maybe I'll wait haha....
