I'm lost, who or what is the "waif"?
Waif is the other girl with the Faceless Men, the one Arya is training with.

Thanks, I missed her name ![]() I don't think it's her name o.0 Waif literally means a poor orphan/homeless/whatever kid who's had a tough life. It's not what she's called, it's the english word for what she presumably is :p On June 05 2016 10:05 Talaris wrote: I think the Waif basically is Arya wearing the Waifs face to act as a mentor to her younger self, teaching her lessons about forgetting the cool-emo-girl-attitude of being "Noone" and standing up to her own beliefs to start her own legend of Arya Wolfborne. Ignoring the her being Arya bit, that could actually be an interesting theory. She's spent long enough with them to see them for what they (seem) to actually be. Just a cult of hired assassins with some face magic. She's way too far in to get out, and wouldn't have anywhere to go anyway, but she saw Arya about to make the same mistakes she did and is trying to save her.

Then this season, we still have both of them "alive". So what is the "true" identity of a faceless man? Is Jaqen talking, or the man carrying Jaqen's face, or does the character change with the face? To be a faceless man is to be no one . They are no one untill they are made to be someone else. So when they put on a face they also take on a personality that goes with it. So when Jaqen dies the waif puts on the Jaqen face and takes on his persona while another faceless man later puts on the face of the waif and takes on her persona. Um,, i think..

So when Jaqen dies the waif puts on the Jaqen face and takes on his persona while another faceless man later puts on the face of the waif and takes on her persona. Um,, i think.. Is it even correct to say the waif put on jaqens face, more like the one currently playing as the waif reassigned to play as jaqen for the rest of that conversation :p It feels kind of like an ant hive, just a collection of beings who have zero self-will or character, except when needed they can don a face and personality and use that until their role is complete, then drop it again and take on a new face as needed. If you somehow saw one without a face on there'd just be nothing there, and the process of inducting new members, is completely destroying any trace of who they are, then cutting their face off and adding it to the shared collection. Although that then asks the question who is actually controlling them and why, I guess some manifestation of the many-faced god? Also I still don't understand how jaqen got caught in the first place. Unless he intentionally planted himself there to contact arya, how does someone like this ever get caught, and why didn't he just run away? I dunno, the whole thing seems bizarre, I guess part of it might be the shows desire to overuse sexy-man-jesus as much as possible which is making the supposed hivemind nature seem overly focussed on one individual? On June 05 2016 20:38 cSc.Dav1oN wrote: possibly there can be something special with their god? I mean, we do have some lord of light representatives, we got old gods with Bran, we got High Sparrow with 7 gods, all they speak differently as well as faceless god. Isn't it the "many faced god" rather than the faceless god? Seems like an important difference because it's the difference between the faceless men actually being faceless beings who don faces when needed, and them just being the amalgamation of all the faces they control, with no existence outside of that hive-mind collective.
