Don`t read the books. I read the books as soon as this season was over, and now I just know where the whole series is going, by just spotting the differences between the books and the TV show.
Depends on your mentality. I've read and I enjoy seeing the story come to life right in front of me on television.
I'm more interested in the political intrigue, cultures, and character interactions. If surprises like Ned's beheading or the Red Wedding are more of your thing, then you might want to avoid the books. I think the luxury of not reading is that you get to enjoy the ride with other viewers, whether it be in this TL thread or with your friends in the living room. Readers kinda have to keep a straight face when they watch with their friends.

if you like a good story, start from book 1. if you enjoy the sensation more, then best not read at all because of stuff mentioned already, surprises like red wedding etc. if you wish to start reading only from book 3, this season ended at about 75-80% into book3, so i think somewhere page 650 or so (atleast in my version).
Game of Thrones season four is welcoming a new castmember when it returns, and we're sure pop culture buffs will nerd out over this one: Sherlock co-creator and star Mark Gatiss has been cast on the HBO fantasy hit as...
We don't know! Yes, Gatiss' role is being kept top-secret, much like Iwan Rheon's role prior to season three. (He was later revealed to be Ramsey Bolton).
This is kind of related to the show: Does anyone know how to find out the schedule of the shooting of season 4? Reason is I plan to go on Vacation in Kings Landing (Dubrovnik) this summer and I am kind of flexible time wise. Would be awesome to check out the capital when they are shooting season 4 there :D

Not sure if it's still up to date, but winteriscoming.net says August 13th to some time in October.

Hmm, a later post on that site mentions they will start some time in August too. Very vague but maybe I'll be lucky!
