But isn't that backstory that's going to be explained in the show eventually? It's like telling people all about Robert's Rebellion before the first episode. I'd rather find out about these things while watching the show, I guess, unless HBO specifically tries to let us know that we better should know all about this before watching the new season. I think all that is explained in HBO videos about what happened in the past.

Just caught up with the show. I swear, every fucking time I get attached to a character, he/she dies. Makes me so angry and sad. The wedding part was just shocking. Did not expect that. Plus, theon is a bitch. edit: Does the show follow the books closely? If so, is there a point where I can start reading from the end of season 3?

start from book 1 mate, you have like 9 months to finish all of them..easy

best start from book one. the series tries to stay as close as possible but there are still some differences.

The show tries to stay faithful to the books, but it has its limitations. The books go much deeper and have more of everything, basically.

I started with the books like 1 month ago, and now I'm way past the shows.. I'm a pretty fast reader tho but still.
Read all the books, they are awesome, and the show skips a lot of cool and funny stuff.

That's a part of its charm though. You'll never know the destiny of anyone on the show! Good/bad, man/woman, young/old, low/highborn - makes no difference I remember watching the end of first season with Ned about to be executed, but having some of his men and Arya in the crowd. I had no doubt he was going to be a main character on the show and that they would make some kind of heroic last second rescue......*chop*.....closing credits. So...uhm........huh?? After that I didn't know what to expect. When Tyreon was struck down in the attack on Kings Landing I felt the same way. Can they really kill off one of the most legendary characters any show has seen in a long time?? Nah!.....or can they? I really wasn't sure, and in a way that's a part of what makes it so awesome I think.
Having just finished season 3, I can tell that was just the beginning :D Unfortunately I had already heard rumors about the wedding (haven't read the books) so I knew something big was going down this time.
Anyway, I think you'll just have to embrace that uncertainty to truly enjoy the show and not become frustrated with it. After all: Valar morghulis

Read all the books. Book 1 is VERY close to the series, but 2 and forward has a lot of extra great stuff and some deviations.

Finally this series is now legit, it just became Simpsonized:

God damn.. can't belive we have to wait 3 years even for Dance. Wonder if Winds of Winter will be out by then. Hell, Stormlight Archive might be on book 4 by then.
