Carnival Row

A human detective and a fairy rekindle a dangerous affair in a Victorian fantasy world, where the city's uneasy peace collapses when a string of murders reveals an unimaginable monster.

Holy cow! First The Boys and now this?! Bright done right.

Pretty much everything about this show is amazing. The sets, actors, atmosphere, plot, characters... Writing is top notch, dialogue is amazing and it all works so well together. This show is nothing short of stellar.

10/10

It looks like Amazon is really stepping up its game and is now producing shows to rival HBO.

Oshin - This is one of the best shows I've ever watched. It follows a young girl living in poverty throughout her whole life to a successful supermarket owner. There's such a huge number of people she meets along the way and they're all so interesting, well acted and sincere. Been watching it since early this year, going to be sad when it's over.

Six Feet Under - After I finished The Wire I thought I'd check out other old HBO series and heard good things about this. Watched about six episodes but don't think I'll continue. Despite some sharp and funny writing, the people in it just creep me out too much. Everyone is so emotionally stunted it seems like. Reminds me too much of my extended family.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Think I would have LOVED this show during horny emo teenage years. Really captures the feel of being a depressed teenager and has good amount of gratuitous fan service. Not getting much out of it though, no real interest to find out what happens next. It's visually gorgeous and I like how it dwells slowly on scenes rather than having tons of quick cuts like you see nowadays.

Watching the Sopranos now and enjoying it quite a bit.

What do you think of Carnival Row?

+ Show Spoiler +

I just watched the whole season 1: I have to say it got me intrigued and I quite liked it. There are some aspects that do not convince me completely, the family and political intrigues I think are a bit far fetched and not so plausible, but if you suspend some of the logical critic to some moves, it's an enjoyable story. I found the world building quite convincing and the characters well rounded.
I do think some of the actors are not the best, especially with the natural comparison with Game of Thrones (I don't want to compare the two series, which are at the end different in scope, but just the acting of some of the main characters... with actors like sean bean, lena headey, peter dinklage and conleth hill it's really hard to have a fair fight )
To be honest at the beginning I was a bit skeptical of Cara Delevigne and Orlando Bloom, though at the end I think they work out well for the story.. on the other end the scenes with sophie and jonah feel all a bit over-acted and too dramatic..)

So I started watching this series the other day...

and was surprised to see it not even mentioned here.

Now, you might think that life in a small agricultural Canadian town of 5000 people is nothing but chorin' and church, but youd's be wrong. These salt of the Earth folk tackle serious and salient issues with wit and wisdom every day, and they're also never shy of getting into a scrap. Sure, you might hear some rumours of ostrich fucking (ALLEGEDLY!) or promiscuous relations, though to be fair (to be fair, to be Fair...) haven't we all done some degen thing in our lives?

Not a trailer

i love the Columbo series. They are now releasing little vignettes on youtube. The lieutenant is about as subtle as an anvil.

Watching this show it sort of makes sense how the 2 biggest game consoles of the day both featured wood paneling. LOL.

Jack Ryan

Just finished season 2. Much better than previous season and I was really impressed by the action scenes. Even some bigger budget full length movies don't get action sequences this good.

Huh, maybe I give it a look. I am just worried it is too "American" for my taste.

I'm really surprised as I thought season 2 of jack ryan was much worse than season 1. There was no real suspense for me, Jack really wasn't interesting to be and didn't really do anything to make him stand out then just another joe.

+ Show Spoiler +
the twists were super duper lame and didn't make any sense, fight me irl if you think geer being dead and buried there wasn't the right move and the twist you thought you saw, the fact that the former interior minister was at the prison camp was so predictable and the fact that it wasn't about nuclear weapons but mining rare earth metals was just poorly executed, Would it have really killed them to make the local spy chief know about the mining deal but not that the senator was being assassinated for discovering it truly believing that it was part of the bigger plan to do yet another coup in South America to deliver this time a popular democratic leader who magically finds yet another resource miracle in her country? That last conversation was Justice league "just save one" levels of a missed opportunity for a frustratingly shitty predictable outcome. A powerful scene of Jack not knowing what to do with his recorder while the senator delivers bangers of lines like "you think Martinez didn't know? The whole thing was his idea. One last coup for his country that had suffered so many. We were going to deliver Venezuela the leader they legitimately elected and a new Massive source of income, Those mercs took the cash to desert their post and follow you pretty fast didn't they? That guy in charge of the "special projects group" didn't even try to find out what was in another container did he? A whole boat with tens of millions of equipment and you run into the one guy in charge of the entire thing and are saved by a german agent that just happened to be on the boat as well." fill in the rest with references from the books.

The villain in season one was extremely competent and smart. The villain in season two was just another dictator.

and Jesus I was rolling my eyes so hard at the end when they just looked at each other and were like "we're going to take the presidential palace in Blackhawks without a scratch. The way they just exited the embassy when it fell was also super lame and was predictable that they would be betrayed.

I didn't really expect any tense suspense or cleverness in it to be honest. I viewed it more as a spy/action movie in the line of JB and MI. On that front it delivers.

Just wanted to let you all know that the first episode of the Mandalorian is pretty good.

It seems that contrary to popular belief Disney can actually make Star Wars... I only hope it keeps being good.

Real. fantastic meshing of practical and CGI effects with a lot of understatement. You might be a bit lost at times if you've never seen or heard of star wars before but I also suspect that even those people would enjoy the basic good sci fi parts of it.

A disappointment is that the old Simpsons seasons are all apparently cut into widescreen so parts of the video is cut off on top and bottom of the screen.

I have to say, I wasn't really impressed with the first episode of The Mandalorian. Yes, the visuals were great, the settings, costumes, camera work, all done very well (though this was to be expected, it's Disney after all), but the story left me feeling kinda...meh. The script for "Chapter One" seemed to be focused heavily on nostalgia, which I don't mind that much, though hopefully they can move away a bit in the next episodes. Having a handful of recognizable actors in these 40 short minutes also didn't help. And what was the point of that riding scene?

Will continue watching for a while, though I'm not sure for how long.

What about The Morning Show? Anyone following that? It's got a pretty nice cast.

Season 2 of The End of the F***ing World was recently released. Any fans?

Not everyone at Disney can, but Dave Filoni can. He's the main dude behind the Clone Wars series and the Star Wars Rebels show. He's a veteran of the George Lucas days.

Those series aren't perfect by any means, but they are quality lore expansions filled with tons of great moments and characters.

The Mandalorian has Filoni at the helm. It was always going to be better than the trash that is the sequel trilogy. The only question is, how good? And more importantly, if successful, what does Dave do next?

Mandalorian, probably, deserves it's own topic, at least I expect it to be, it looks good. Love such smart mix of practical effects and cgi, and combined it looks great!

The Mandalorian has a lot of people involved from a lot of star wars television. People were right to bash rebels first season but they got better over time and the clone wars had some of the best episodes in animation in those years, not to mention they have "the greater man of Hollywood" John "I have caused more losses in Hollywood by people trying to replicate me then Bernie Madoff at this point" Favreau making sure they have the support of the marvel/star wars effects machine while not fucking with the vision.

There are two majors flaws : star wars is now retrofuturism and the story was non existent. The rest was good (although too gloomy) but it's not enough imo.
