That being said, being born with sharingan doesn't mean you are already an op ninja. Itachi and Sasuke were supposed to be significantly more skilled than the rest of their clan. They did this by working hard to master their skills. They don't have to work as hard as Rock Lee, but Sasuke can't just sit on his ass all day and hope that one day he'll be able to use Susano.

The same argument applies to Naruto. The demon fox is supposed to be this unruly beast who despises living inside Naruto and wants to break free. When Naruto is exhibiting demon fox powers, he's also in a contest of wills with the demon fox. If Naruto didn't fight the demon fox in willpower each time he starts leaking red chakra, then the fox would be free now and probably tentacle raping kages left and right.

Did Naruto and Sasuke work as hard as Rock Lee to attain the same level? No. Did Naruto and Sasuke work harder than say Chouji, Ino and the other largely unimportant minor characters? Yes! If Ino and Chouji and the rest were to work as hard as Sasuke and Naruto would they be equal in power? No. Naruto and Sasuke have the benefit of both working hard and being naturally strong (through eyes, demon foxes and high amounts of chakra from parents).

A professional athlete is someone who is both genetically gifted and a hard worker. If Naruto and Sasuke were to sit around and eat ramen all day, they wouldn't be two of the most powerful ninja in the manga right now.

Edit: Things like mangekyo sharingan, sage mode, rasengan etc. are not "given" to the characters. Just because you have a teacher helping you to learn it, doesn't mean you acquire the skill/ability without putting forth any effort. I can't take a class in physics, give a half ass effort and then claim that i'm now a master physicist. Yes Naruto and Sasuke were given advantages in learning those skills, but they still had to put forth the time and effort into learning it.

If the manga stayed in the area of "less epic", more mature part1 and didnt try to give us "WORLD WILL BE MINE" villain (Tobi), would be much more enjoyable. Orochimaru was far better than any other villain he added later.

Shounens are just not good for depicting a great rivalry ; , something like Vagabond on the other hand...

IIRC the only reason he relied on the toads to get into sage mode is because to absorb "nature chakra" and get into sage mode you have to be perfectly still . Which naruto overcame by his kagebunshins while jiraiya relied on the toads.

However you do have a point with the jiraiya having more of a toad like appearance.
