A bit disappointed to see that the only nomination for Gone Girl is Rosamund Pike (it's well deserved, I hope she wins), I really loved that movie. Most of the movies are not released in France yet so I'll have to wait to have an opinion. I loved Whiplash and GBH though
|
Gyllenhaal got snubbed so hard.
|
Meh, I couldn't care less about all those movies and most of the actors. Some awards are also quite beyond my interest (makeup and hairstyling for example).
|
Only seen three of the movies in the OP so far, all are located in best visuals. I haven't watched an awards show since the early 90s, but there doesn't seem to be much diversity of films between the categories. Is that common for this kind of show-ceremony-thing, or was 2014 a bad year?
|
Surprised to see Nightcrawler get almost nothing.
Birdman better win best picture though. And Whiplash better win best editing!

Is that common for this kind of show-ceremony-thing, or was 2014 a bad year? It's a trend in the recent years. I think it's mostly the result of the big studios shifting their focus to franchise and sequels which limits the amount of good movies they produce. And since the Oscars are made by and for the big studios, you get less diversity.
I'm surprised Gone girl has not been nominated in best film but Sniper and GBH were, not that it's going to matter since Boyhood is super favorite to win. Also incredibly surprised that Gyllenhaal didn't get nominated.
I think Boyhood and Julian Moore are super favorite, maybe Keaton in best actor.

The LEGO movie got fucking robbed.
Big Hero 6 was a pile of crap. bleh~

Yeah i was going to say how come Blue is the Warmest Colour didn't get in the FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM category.

American Sniper is nominated?! For what, to balance grand hotel budapest ?
|

Because it has "American" in it. It's a good movie, but no way it deserves a nomination.
I agree that Jake Gyllenhaal got snubbed. The man is a great actor, and his performance in Nightcrawler is a testament to that. The guy was a completely different man in that film from losing a lot of weight, awkward mannerisms, having that creepy wide eyed stare, and just straight up being a sociopath. And oh look, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore being nominated just cuz. No surprise there.
|
Yeah, what a fucking joke. Nightcrawler didn't get nominated but American Sniper did and Jake Gyllenhaal not nominated either... WTF?!
Although Boyhood was a pretty good movie and one of a kind in its own right but i feel like it's going to win the best picture just because it took 12+ years to make and people will feel like they have some sort of obligation to vote for it.
|
I am disappointed with the nominations this year for sure. I am also shocked like most, that Jake got snubbed. He acted WAY better then Steve Carrel. Also, no best supporting actor for Brolin in Inherent Vice? His character literally is the best thing about that movie.
Oh well, I enjoyed Birdman a lot so I hope it takes this years Oscars for pretty much everything. It's such a good movie.
|
Go Grand Budapest! =] (Though sadly I'm sure boyhood will get best picture, which isn't a travesty or anything, just didn't enjoy it as much)
|
I hope Birdman wins best picture but I doubt it will.

Has anyone seen Stephen Hawking film yet? Really looks gripping from trailers but i haven't come round to see it yet? I really am interesting in him and watch all his documentaries. Just wonder if it is a bit to holywood or not.
|
holy shit, Gyllenhaal got snub so hard. He was fucking amazing in Nightcrawler. He also had an amazing performance in Enemy. To bad the academy is pretty stupid most of the time.
|

I expect The Imitation Game to take Best Picture and Best Actor, it was superbly done.

That said, Felicity Jones is extremely good and Eddie Redmayne is utterly outstanding. I don't think anyone can complain if he wins best actor, simply given who he was playing and what it required.
The nominations suck this year but they always suck. Last year's nominations were far worse.

Enemy and Under the Skin were 2014 right? And they got nothing?

Yeah, I saw that and Under Your Skin should have at least gotten a nod.

Watched Big Hero 6 the weekend, was funny in places and felt a bit of an Anime vibe to it in the direction of the film so i was pretty happy with it. I'd recommend it but still surprised Lego Movie didn't get on the list i think that was much better.

You are wrong by the way.

American Sniper is nominated .... must be because 'Murica! and not because it's actually a good movie
|
yeah... American Sniper but no Nightcrawler.
/ignore
|
Wow, I am so out of the loop. I've heard of 0 of the films nominated for best film.
I've seen HTTYD2 though. Pulling for it to win, since I still think it was a travesty HTTYD lost to TS3 ... but looking at the other entrees in that category, looks like it'll be another competitive year for the animated films.

Surprised to see Birdman winning so many of these categories. I loved the film and saw it twice, but I don't think it was the best original screenplay or best directing.
Big Hero 6 was dumb compared to Seas, Kaguya and obviously the LEGO movie. I think it's just become the Disney/Pixar award, even though they're slipping a lot on their game.
Rest of the wins seem pretty fair. Leviathan was a lot more watchable than Ida, but really Two Day, One Night should've won it.

Quite happy with the results in the major categories.
Birdman was a great movie and worthy of the award. Boyhood winning it would have been a travesty.
Wanted Keaton to win best actor but Redmayne absolutely blew that role away so I'm cool with that.
While I thought Still Alice was a little overrated (didn't like the directing/editing), Moore was awesome. Great choice.
JK Simmons is a boss. Nothing more to say.
Arquette was the best part of Boyhood so that is a good call too imo.
|
I'd rather have Michael Keaton win best actor than Birdman winning those awards. That said, it's the best, most sophisticated of the bunch in my opinion (havent seen Selma though) so, well-deserved I guess
One of the rare year that the Oscars do not disappoint me much except for the joke animation category

See, this is pretty subjective and given the love for Birdman is more universal than Boyhood, I can see it getting best picture. But best directing? What Linklater did was ridiculous.
Nightcrawler should've been best original screenplay.

What Linklater did, imo, was merely a test in endurance.
Boyhood exhibited true skill when it came to directing. Something (the style of this movie) you very rarely see, and almost never done better.

He put together a compelling, coherent, well-acted movie over the course of 12 years. It ran too long for some people and it didn't have the A -> B plot some people require, but it's one of the most ambitious things ever done in film and had a million chances to fail, but didn't.
Calling it a test of endurance... have you ever seen a successful 12 year project in business or movies or music or anything? It just doesn't happen.
Birdman was fantastic, but I don't think it was the directorial achievement that Boyhood was.

Not a fair comparison. The entire point is that there is absolutely nothing special about the way that movie is directed. It's plain, verging on mediocre. The fact it took 12 years in no way makes the DIRECTING better is my point. The 96 Bulls didn't just show up, they were great. Showing up for 12 years isn't enough to make it amazing directing automatically.
I could be wrong, but I'd wager that if we learned that Boyhood was filmed over a normal film time, using actors/makeup instead of actual aging (see 12 years a slave + thousands of other movies), then most of the people defending him would agree Inarritu did a better directing job.
Either way this is mostly subjective and merely my opinion.
|
Yeah, very happy with the results too.
The Grand Hotel Budapest got a good collection of Oscars that depict well what made it exceptional while it was nominated in major categories, it's good they'll get to put some awards on their "Blueray box" (What's that?).
Also Alexandre Desplat nominated twice for best Original Score! :o.
|
Whiplash not winning best adapted screenplay is an absolute travesty...
Second only to the lack of Nightcrawler nominations
|
Well, at least J.K. Simmons won tonight, he fucking killed it in Whiplash and deserved it so much.
Much like everyone else here though I am wondering what happened to Nightcrawler, literally saw nothing for it....and it was definitely one of the best movies last year. Maybe this is why I don't pay much attention to these award shows.
|
I think we'll look back at the 2015 nominees and realize it was a pretty weak crop. Probably the worst batch since 2011 when The Artist won.

Havent seen all the films, but seems pretty odd nominations.
No mention of Edge of Tomorrow at all. Lego Movie didnt get nomiated for best animated (the fuck?)
Gone Girl and Interstellar shoulda been up for best picture.

That was the year they ignored stuff like Drive and Take Shelter, and threw in crap like War Horse. Still a weak year overall.
I don't think 2014 was a weak year for films at all though. Birdman would've won over plenty of other years' picks.

Still not seen the entire list to vote yet haha. Was the Actress' awards (supporting and best) worthy winners? Seems like another not giving it to the big names again?

Both were locks for winning. Julianne Moore is a terrific actress when she doesn't over-act, and Patricia Arquette is always top-notch. I would've given it to Cotillard but Moore winning isn't too farfetched.

God, Inarritu really ? Can we go back to the 50s, 70s or anything else really...

Stupid that interstellar was only nominated for best visual effects
|
Pretty straightforward winners here, glad American Sniper didn't get major wins based solely off the subject matter. Birdman was amazing and a cinematographic masterpiece, so I'm cool with that.
Most satisfying win for me is Redmayne for Best Actor, dude absolutely represented Hawking in that film, and that is something so stunningly gripping to watch.

Intrestingly, both oscar winning lead actor and actresses were also in very poor films the same year. Definitive proof that the Academy can judge an actor's performance for the film they are nominated rather than collectively.

Happy that Eddie Redmayne got best actor. His performance in The Theory of Everything was stunning.

It's not just that Redmayne was in a poor film.. I don't think it's unfair to say he was absolutely putrid garbage in Jupiter Ascending. It was physically upsetting to listen to his character (no hyperbole). Worst part of a bad film. Wonder what went wrong... Probably just phoning it in for a movie he knew sucked.
Julianne Moore was quite good in THG at least, unless you're talking about a different movie.
