Much like everyone else here though I am wondering what happened to Nightcrawler, literally saw nothing for it....and it was definitely one of the best movies last year. Maybe this is why I don't pay much attention to these award shows.

I think he meant the batch was low quality the year the artist won, not that the artist was bad itself necessarily

I don't think 2014 was a weak year for films at all though. Birdman would've won over plenty of other years' picks.

Most satisfying win for me is Redmayne for Best Actor, dude absolutely represented Hawking in that film, and that is something so stunningly gripping to watch.

Definitive proof that the Academy can judge an actor's performance for the film they are nominated rather than collectively. It's not just that Redmayne was in a poor film.. I don't think it's unfair to say he was absolutely putrid garbage in Jupiter Ascending. It was physically upsetting to listen to his character (no hyperbole). Worst part of a bad film. Wonder what went wrong... Probably just phoning it in for a movie he knew sucked. Julianne Moore was quite good in THG at least, unless you're talking about a different movie.
