I came up with an idea for a fanfic based around the idea of Nightmare Moon not being defeated by the Elements. Instead, the Mane 6 fail their quest and there ends up as a war between NM and Celestia's supporters. So, I decided to make this work, NM had to be smarter. Villains in a kid's show tend to be stupid. So I sketched out a prologue, involving Celestia being ambushed by NM, but I realised that unless Celestia was a complete dumbass, there's no way she'd be wandering anywhere on the night of NM's return without about two thousand royal guards within ten feet, so I had to come up with this intricate plan of Celestia's that involved that NOT happening, and a way for Nightmare Moon to then foil it, allowing Celestia to actually lose. So now I have this Death Note-esque escalating multi-layered mindfuckery between two characters, and this is set entirely within the Prologue, before the main story begins, and 90% of it happens BEFORE the beginning of the story even happens. Needless to say, it is unlikely the story will ever be written. | ||

That said, the simplest solution to this complex problem is to just abandon this idea and move on to another idea I have. Intelligence plays a large role in that fic as well, but not in the hero vs. villain sense that leads to the problems that arose above. Intelligent characters are much easier to deal with when the obstacles they're trying to overcome aren't other equally intelligent characters. | ||

A short story about the start of the war between NM and celestia sounds like a great story. | ||

Just because someone is intelligent and wise doesn't mean they don't make mistakes, or can't be caught off guard. It's not like they both have to be freaking Grand Admiral Thrawn (bonus points to anyone who gets that reference) to be intelligent and wise. Unless that's what you want, in which case, a fan fiction that's basically spy vs. spy or Code Geass set in Equestria with ponies could definitely be fun. | ||
