Watched a Bollywood movie called 3 Idiots. Highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time, so it's probably well known for anyone who usually pays attention to Indian films, but anyone else...

Anyway, reading a synopsis of it will probably make you think it's a bad frat house movie, but it's really a solid comedy, narrative, and emotional story, with a side of social commentary. Plus part musical.
Average means I'm better than half of you.

Four Lions. One of very few movies that can make terrorism into a comedy without offending (too much....)

It was hillarious and serious at the same time. Not sure how hidden it is. (Only 34 000 voters on IMDB)

Exit through the gift shop http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587707/

I had never heard of it and didn't expect anything of it. I was on a documentary watching spree and it was just one of around 20 random documentary movies I watched recently and it was easily the best of those 20.

So, I don't know if anyone has seen it yet BUT the entry in the Evil Dead franchise is totally hardcore. I am literally obsessed with the old films and expected pretty much nothing. What I got was frigging cringe worth nail biting experience... I haven't been in that state for years watching a horror movie. LOVED IT.

haha oh man thanks for bumping this thread and reminding me of Exit Through The Gift Shop. What an amazing, hilarious and infuriating documentary all rolled up in one. Highly recommended. If you watch it for the first time and get a little ways into it and start to wonder what exactly the point is, just stick with it D:

been watching Tim Burtons Batman movies (there are 2) recently.
The one with the Joker (Jack Nickolson) was allright but "Batman returns" with the Penguin and Catwoman was so amazing that I couldnt believe it. So many great ideas, so much emotion (feeling sorry for the deformed Penguin). Its one of my favorite movies now. Of course its not a serious movie, its a big crazy fantasymovie; one that makes your deeper parts in the brain rotate (those that try to stabalize your reality). crotesque and funny!
I especially love the part, when the Penguin remotecontrolls the Batmobile, while sitting in a kids toy version of the Batmobile himself!

other better than expected movies:
the Hobbit
Gamer
Thank you for smoking (why do so few know this one? its so amazingly good)
Deep Rising

btw: does anybody know good but unknown Anime-Movies? like "spirited away"

Wow, Moon and City of God (plus lost in translation) in a thread called hidden gems, this is definitely r/movies lol
Edit : May I suggest Fight Club Pulp Fiction ?

Never heard about Moon.
City of god is known only because it has been so highly rated but it is definitely something the mass hasn't seen.
It is even more importantly a movie that people should really see even though they might have been turned off by the pitch.

Yeah but these are movies released in international distribution, with DVD and BluRay releases and what-not all over the place. When I came to this thread I expected to see independent, or amateur staff, some relic from the past which can be only found on private trackers, or a neat documentary with limited circulations - not godfucking Lost In Overappraisal.

Couldn't agree more..99% of what I've seen in this thread I am pretty sure is very well known/acclaimed on some level, not saying it's a bad thing they're all great movies but there is a movie thread for that..

yes but this is a starcraft site. many movies cited here are/were shown in art cinemas (ok not the ones I cited).
its a great thread for people who dont only want to see the IMDB 200 but movies that satisfy alternative interests and arent totally braindead (braindead is an awesome movie too btw).
also the hidden gems you are talking about are probably only for art students that talk about how well cut the movie is.
all in all this thrad is a great inspiration. lets keep it going plz

Mention for Lo, an astoundingly good (if very stagey) artsy flick about a guy who summons a demon to get his girlfriend back.

Really good, especially if you've seen universal soldier 1, completely different tone in this one though. If you're new to the universal soldier movies you don't have to watch and of the previous ones to get this movie, it's probably not even meant as a direct sequel.
My advice is to skip the second and the 4th movies and watch 1 + 3, Dolph has the most amazing psychotic breakdown in this one leading up to a good old universal showdown

Have you tried reading? My patience with uneducated scum is like you is running low. To see what this thread is about read page one post one. Since I am sincere I will quote it for you.

Page 1 Post 1
Have you ever sat down to watch a film, and been surprised at how good it is? I don't mean you watch a film you thought would be good, and it was great. Rather a film you thought would be just alright, but it turned out to be a good film. Or any hidden gems you know of? Films that are good but not many people have even heard of?

I recently watched Welcome to the Jungle (The Rundown) staring the Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and a film with him just sounds lame. But it was a good film, not just good for the Rock, but a good film! Very surprised by that, and I really enjoyed it. I also watched Big Nothing staring Simon Pegg, and I had never heard of it before and it sounded a bit lame, but again it was a really good film.

The Rundown
Big Nothing

By hidden gem I mean films that are hidden from the audience that will enjoy them. The film could be hidden because it was relatively low budget, and had little to no advertising. Or because it's own advertising/promotion/actors/synopsis shrouded what the film truly was. I don't mean simply hidden from main stream.

So what about you? Any surprisingly good hidden films you know of?

EDIT: When posting a film, post it with an IMDB link if at all possible.

Edit: In case you have comprehensive fails, it basicly means that you can post movies that turned out better than you expected (regardless of how mainstream) AND movies that are less known but still were decent and might be interesting to a certain group.

If you for example thought that Fight club was a movie about boxing, than you might be surprised by it and (if) liked it, then you can post it here.
I hope you can understand now.

Go watch Chan-wook Park´s (Oldboy) new movie. There is a thread on TL but not really much going on there, although I thought exspecially all the SC fans (since it´s korean) should know and many like his works. Stoker was definitly interesting and the scenery/camera was just gorgeous.

I feel like Blood Diamond doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves. I may just be a romantic, but I absolutely fell in love with that movie. Granted, it has been a minute or two since I've seen it, so I may have just been in the afterglow when I formed my opinion of it, but from what I remember, it's one of the most underrated films that I can recall off-hand (I realize calling such a big production underrated seems weird, but seriously).
The universe created an audience for itself.
