An excellent mystery/sci-fi movie! A lot of people seem to dislike this movie because it leaves a lot of things to be figured out by yourself, and that puts a lot of people off. Personally I LOVE it.
It's from Richard Kelly who wrote Donnie Darko, and they share a lot of similarities. I'm still not sure I understand the ending, and I like it!
btw thanks for this thread! showd me some awsome movies i didnt see this one in it though the number 23
i usually see twists comeing from the start of movies and sadly know how they end, however not with this one. it totally raped my mind. i watched it on the 12.11 12+11=23 wtf? ^^ na just kidding. i say watch it you wont regret it. also this movie made me like jim carrey, god i hate all his comedy
inside job - sigh, ridiculous stuff. the art of getting by - quite liked it, good movie probably not. simple if not particularly accurate way to describe it, it's kind of a funny story with less humour and more angst.
Wing Commander I liked this one, but not as much as the others. I think I mostly really liked this era of sci fi equipment and ships. Reminds me of the gritty feel of early Star Wars and Alien.
Received an oscar for best foreign movie. Displays the life, fear and moral in the occupied eastern germany in the 70s/80s.
Evil Ondskan. Great scandinavian movie about a teenager stuck between a violent stepfather, his own problems and trying to integrate in a new school. A violent boy is being put in a private school, receiving his last chance to finish school. As a matter of fact there is a strict hierarchy between the teenagers including lots of violence and supression.
I'm probably going to get crucified and deficated on for this, but I really enjoy:
It's not half bad.
Although the story is pretty obvious (come on, it's a sequel, you can't fault them for that), it really sets a dark, somber mood and has no typical Hollywood ending.
The order 66 command and the final battle between Vader and Obi Wan are both really good and it was fun seeing Yoda fight.
For all that, it lacks the epic feel of original Star Wars and has way too much teenage angst and pathetic relationship crap in it, but I'd give it at least 7/10 and don't quite understand, why it's reception is so overwhelmingly negative.
Also props for letting go of that ridiculous medichlorian-concept, that was so retarded.

In particular - Still Walking: a beautiful and sensitive film in the tradition of Yasujiro Ozu. Every year a family gathers to commemorate the death of the eldest son, who died while rescuing another man from drowning. The surviving son has married a woman who already has a child. The father expected his children to follow in his footsteps and take up medicine. One son did, but not the living one. There are many things, I suppose, these people would like to say to each other, but this is not a "thanksgiving" movie. It is as true as it can be to the reality of unspoken tension and silent disagreements between family members, recognizing that confessions are extraordinary things, and that, very often, that which is left unsaid, remains unsaid.
Also, if you enjoy dark, quirky comedy, you must see these two movies by director Roy Andersson: Songs from the Second Floor and You, The Living.
There are plenty of clips on youtube for your enjoyment, but here's the opening of You, The Living.
Thanks for posting this. After looking him up I realized he is the director of one of my favourite movies and one that definitely belongs on this list to let people know it exists - Daremo Shiranai. It is about a mother who leaves her children at home for weeks and months at a time and the screwed up life they live because of it.
When reading OP a great masterwork came into my mind called "Una de zombis". I was going to watch a usual Zombie-movie and got an anarcho-horror-comedy with an intelligent plot. Insane!
Really liked this movie and hate almost everything else JCVD does, Its not in English but it is really good.
Also if you like historical movies this series is great Its an story of the king of Thailand who liberated Thailand from Burma, I'm staying in Thailand now and was just introduced to these movies and they really are amazing and good special effects considering its not a Hollywood block buster.
Edit: Part 1 and 2 have been relesed in the US earlier this year with the title kingdom of War, and here is the Trailer to Part 3 which I saw in theaters
Haha, I'm surprised someone on TL knows about this film. The first and second movie are pretty good, but the series went down hill from the third one. I watched the forth one with my friend when I went back to Thailand. I gotta say that it's probably the most incoherence movie I've ever seen. The romance sub plot distracted the main plot way too much and sometimes the film got needlessly too violence (there is the scene in which a cavalry ran in to cut a guy's head and the camera slowmotioned for no reason). It was so bad that we left the cinema early :/

Lol, when I saw the title of the post I was thinking: "The Number 23 for sure". 2 sec later I go to last page and see this lol ^^
The movie is so good, and it is also very interesting to see Jim Carrey in the role as a very "depressed" psycho.
I was surprised how good this movie actually was. I was expecting some sad movie about some guys wife but it totally blew my mind. Everyone needs to see this movie.

Just went through the whole thread (quickly though - I only looked at the posts that had movie posters) and made a nice long list in anticipation for the holiday break, so thanks TL.
My contributions would be in affirming the choices of Equilibrium and Children of Men even though their status as hidden gems are questionable. I would also like to recommend the following, I don't think it's been mentioned (at least not the poster) but I think it qualifies as a hidden gem:
I feel like it's a love it or hate it movie, I for one LOVED it and I'm usually not into the comedy genre, especially this type of humour. It got mixed reviews, so my disclaimer is that if you're not laughing by the end of the first scene then save yourself the trouble. A lot of people will disagree with me but there's not a lot that hasn't already been posted to this thread and I wanted to contribute after stealing many ideas. (It stars the creators of South Park, but surprisingly not written or directed by them).
Four Lions, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and Attack the Block, they aren't really hidden gems if you are a Brit but they are probably not too big outside of England

Best martial arts actor ever, one of the most consistently epic directors of all time, and a shockingly deep, complex, and beautiful story and presentation. Anyone who watches this movie all the way through and doesn't love it is absolutely insane!
Music and sound design are also incredible... AGH I have to watch it again now!
Totally agree! I have seen a lot of "similar" movies, like hidden dragon, battle of the lost city etc. but this one beats them all, easily. Maybe the best movie ever made (right behind "memento" and "thin red line").
