It's about 5 college kids who all have a saturday detention. They are all extremely different and they interact with each other very differently but they end up learning things from each other. It's also funny in a dry way (its a drama). There is the Bully, the Jock, the Nerd, the Beauty queen and the Freak. Also the teacher who plays another main character.. and thats it! Really good if you want something really light to watch and dont want to get too into it. Has anyone else seen this? Did you like it as much as I did? LOL its like.. one of the most famous movies made in the 80's - not at all unknown

Oshii's best film is the one in my post: Angel's Egg. Ghost in the Shell is an AMAZING movie, however. As is The Sky Crawlers. Anno is a tossup between Nadia and Honneamise, although for the later he was only the animation director. The End of Evangelion is good if you've seen the series. My comments on Miyazaki come not only from the immense level of hype surrounding him (which is fine by itself), but it's existence considering he has made the same movie like 27 times.

You just made me so happy... I love the way Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki MAKE their films... But I only like a select few of them. I'm a big Satoshi Khan boy after Millenium Actress blew me away, and Makoto Shinkai also rocks my socks. The Place Promised In Our Early Days is probably my favorite animated film at this point in time, if neither of you Miyazaki talkers (or anyone else who likes anime really) have seen it I highly recommend it. 5 Centimeters is obviously good, but everyone's already seen it.

An aussie film, never got much attention, randomly found it at the video store one day. Not only does it have Ben Lee (singer not an actor, but does a fantastic job), it has the beautiful Rose Byrne (also an Australian gem) and is witty and poignant. My favourite movie ever.

The Edukators: Rather than describe it, I'll just tell you to go watch the first ~3 minutes. The Brothers Bloom: Maybe less hidden, but a pretty enjoyable comedy.

Time travel is difficult to pull off in films. Very few get it right. And I never expect Bruce Willis movies to knock me down. But 12 Monkeys is a really special piece of film. One of Terry Gilliam's best, I think. I think it made something like $500,000 dollars at the box office. I remember seeing it in theaters and being blown away. Even at 13. It's been accepted into my movie hall of fame since. An amazing mood piece that thinking people can get a lot out of. Especially people with movement on the brain. I remember seeing the trailer for Fight Club when I was 8 or 9. It didn't red flag any of its social commentary. It was just Brad Pitt acting silly and a lot of dark sets. I didn't end up seeing it until middle school. Definitely in my top 5 of all time. This is actually one I expected to be good. But it's one of those gems people tend to lump into the "quirky comedy" category. It's actually a lot more than that. In its colorful comedy fluff there exists a great deal of serious existential philosophy. A truly rare find. Great writing and performances on top of it. I didn't expect this to be as good as 21 Grams (a more Hollywoody film by the same writer/director), but it far-surpassed it. I watched it while sober one night in high school and couldn't get it out of my head. The most emotionally packed film I've seen. And my favorite movie to boot. A lot of others, I'll add as I think of them!

By no means action packed, but so grounded that it's hard not to be affected by them.

This thread is about movies that are good but not well known, and movies like fight club dont really qualify for "hidden gem" status, don't you think?

"The girl with the dragon tattoo" Suprised this wasnt mentioned yet. A suprisingly good norwegian detective/mystery show, with some truly memorable/disturbing scenes. Its like #205 on imdb 8.2 if i recall just out on dvd last week, and hollywood is gonna remake it and as usual shit all over it remember what happened to the ring? lol

A LOT of people can't stand Jim Carey. This is his best performance IMO, his most serious work. This movie is a disturbing look at middle American white trash When this came out there was a huge backlash and most theaters banned it, kind of sad because few others were willing to make a movie so full of eye opening truths at the time relating to youth culture. A future where man and machine are indistinguishable
