"Nu metal" is a misnomer, since it's not actually metal. Bands like Slipknot or Tool don't contain enough metal elements (namely the style of riffage) to be considered metal. If you're arguing that "nu metal" bands should be discussed in this thread because what constitutes metal is subjective, then I could say "IMO Pink Floyd and Green Day are psychedelic progressive br00tal traditional metal *posts link to YouTube vids* and you wouldn't be able to say shit due to your own principle that "metal is diverse".
The lyrics in that Attack Attack song isn't the bad part of the song. Everything else...the instrumentation, the vocals themselves and overall songwriting is what sucks.
Metal as an overall genre has some of the shittiest lyrics around, and there are even bonehead deathmetal freaks who go so far as to say that death metal vocals are just another tone to "fill the void"... -____-;;
EDIT This thread also got boring. Post some songs, please.
For all you death metal fans I really recommend Torture Division. Awesome swedish death metal that releases all their stuff for free also! All the songs can be downloaded from http://www.torturedivision.net

I don't agree with this. When I hear slipknot or KSE I feel that I surely can headbang the shit out of myself when listening to them. That makes them (Atleast for me) metal!
And any argument saying: "Maeeaeh, I can headbang to Britney Spears, does that make her metal!?". Well... sure, I guess YOU can consider her metal, but I still won't.
Warning: Above is just an example, I am not saying that you acctually think Britney Spears is metal.

some genres of metal dont have clearly defined musical traits so im not suprised there is a big conflict of opinion here

nu-metal != heavy metal
People need to figure out these distinctions. If you listen to Slipknot and Disturbed, you are not a metal fan. You're a teenager. If you listen to Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, you're a trendy goth. If you listen to Burzum and Mayhem, you're probably a neo-nazi.
I'm very harshly opinionated about this, by the way .
Uhmmm....
<--- is fucking awesome!!!
Way more wicked than Korpiklaani, dont get me wrong - I wuw Korpiklaani and I've been at several of their concerts... But pls, dont knock on Dimmu. Craddle, alright! But not on Dimmu!

I knock on Dimmu not because of their music, but because of their aesthetic and lyrics. I actually enjoy a bunch of their songs, like Vredesbyrd and Progenies of the Great Apocalypse. However, their "HOLY SHIT WERE SO FCKING EVIL PRAISE THE LORD SATAN" marketing really, really bugs me.

That's an extremely elitist view of things. While yes, breakdowns originated in a non-metal genre of music (hardcore, which is already pushing the boundaries between punk and metal), there's no doubt that breakdowns have become an integral part of most modern death metal, which often rides a fine line between being actual death metal or deathcore. Would you argue that Beneath the Massacre or even Dying Fetus aren't metal bands? That's a tough point to prove.
And even though I dislike Beneath the Massacre (not enjoyable to listen to, nasty triggered drums and such), here's some backup to prove my point:
Death core =/= modern death metal. Metal is one of the most versatile genres in music because you can do so so so much with it. But I believe there are certain elements that just simply don't fit. It just sounds SO wrong and tainting.
