It's solid stuff, nothing mind exploding or neck breaking, but it's a good album. MA reviews are also very high (over 90%) and it's free. So get it if you need a new death metal album in your music library to enjoy ;]
As a huge Opeth fan, it saddens me greatly and makes me angry to see Mikael keep saying stuff like "Fuck metal, fuck growls, we don't do it anymore and our older stuff was boring." I can understand wanting to branch out and try new stuff, but why call your fans who liked your older stuff "close minded" ? Why discredit your older stuff, why make it seem like you hate it ? I don't get it, as a band you need to make sure your fans are happy, but when you say stuff like this I get pretty sad.

Any other Opeth fans feel the same?
Wow I hadn't read anything of that sort...
Reminds me of when Quorthon started shitting on his early Bathory works (which, for anyone who isn't aware, were seminal works in the development of Black Metal and Viking-themed metal)
I'd even call it a bit more ironic, I feel like their trademark combination of prog/death with melodies and acoustic interludes was by far one of the most creative and interesting things in metal ever, and yet he thinks it's music for close-minded people...
This is just fucking sad. I don't mind their non-metal music, far from it, I enjoyed Damnation and Heritage quite a bit, but to make such statements is ridiculous...
Anyway, I found this last night for the first time:
Thank you so much Face_1, I've been looking for that! The Ocean are great, I enjoyed their Precambrian album a lot.

Fans say that Heritage is quite a bit weaker and boring compared to their older stuff and they prefer it, and Mike in one of his interviews said "I think we accept to lose fans who are close minded that can't accept the music we do" it's not an 100% quote but pretty similar if I remember right. And I agree with you, they were pretty much the most unique band in the metal scene with their own style, but now I'm sure there are many similar bands doing what they did with Heritage. I hope they get back on their feet with next album.
Aren't most bands that are pushing 20+ years similar to Opeth though? Maybe in different extremities, and can also be seen as "selling out" too, but when you're doing a style for so long I can imagine that the average person (band) wants to change their sound and I don't blame them for it.
I agree though, Opeth shouldn't alienate their fanbase (me included!) like that and keep a tighter lid; their last album speaks louder than words on their stance.
Edit: I finished all the Coroner albums yesterday and I have to say that my favorite one was Mental Vortex. I felt that it had the perfect balance of thrash metal intensity and progressive elements, whereas their last album was pushing more towards the progressive line, which I don't mind too much but yeah. In general though all albums were solid as fuck.

Well Heritage is pretty much a tribute to 70s prog. From what some dudes have told me, if you're big into 70s prog and have heard all the classics there, it's a fairly derivative album with few interesting moments. I personally am not, so I liked some of it.

Opeth aren't selling out, if anything their prog style is even less accessible from a mainstream-audience point of view. And yeah, most bands flop by that time, although there are some (I'm going to go with Swedish examples here) like Meshuggah and Dark Tranquillity who can continuously reinvent themselves and keep sounding fresh and interesting on every release, and others like Amon Amarth whose sound evolves much more subtly, and yet still deliver excellent music on every album.

Yeah Mental Vortex is fucking amazing although I personally am more partial to No More Color. The first couple of albums are massively underrated as well, I recommend giving them a few more spins sometime later down the road. They're growers, once you get past the production. Reminds me of Destruction's early stuff in that regard, haha.

best singing ever I heard was with Blind Guardian, check this:
Saw them live two years ago, was amazing. Also, on a Subway to Sally concert, I have witnessed the whole audience singing Raeuber saufen Blut, without any instruments playing, for 5 minutes straight while there was a switchover in bands, hours before Subway was actually playing.
Heritage was phenomenal. It's not the first time Opeth stripped all death metal elements out of one of their albums either, they did so with Damnation which was also awesome. So yeah, I never really understood all the sell out claims when Heritage came out, plus it's not like they put out some crappy dumbed down music to gain mainstream acceptance or something. 70s prog isn't exactly all over radios these days if you know what I mean. On top of all that, it's a grower. When it first came out I preferred Damnation but these days I go for Heritage every time.
Also, can't wait for some new Gorguts. Obscura is a classic, anyone that doesn't know the band should start there. Extremely unique band.
Hmm about Gorguts I have to say I prefer Erosion of Sanity and Considered Dead, but all of their material has been excellent and I'm definitely looking forward to this new album as well!
@ Bleak: Honestly I tend to agree, the emotion in that song is insane and the bass work, while not particularly flashy, does a phenomenal job, atmosphere-wise. For me it's the atmosphere and the mood that makes older DT work stand out and also stand above their later releases, although again, they're consistently great.

Well Damnation still felt like Opeth. Mikael apparently gets really angry at this, people saying Heritage wasn't Opeth, but damn yes it isn't!
What most of the fans love I believe is the beautiful mixing of melodic prog death metal with acoustic interludes. This song structure is important to me. Damnation didn't break this uniqueness of Opeth. It wasn't death metal, it didn't have growling vocals, but still the song structure was there. Up to Heritage, all albums had songs that felt like this structure was in place. I loved about their rock ballads, instrumentals, softer songs, those are not my problem with Heritage. Heritage is just way too different as a whole. Devil's Orchard and Folklore are two songs that I can say "Ok, those are Opeth" but the rest just scream "this is not Opeth" to me. As a whole ofcourse.
Individually, most of the songs in the album are alright. Famine and Haxprocess are pretty bad songs to me. But as a whole, the album isn't bad, it's pretty good and nice to listen. However, as an Opeth album, it just doesn't feel like it.
lol oddly enough haxprocess was my favorite song off heritage. It was a pretty big departure from "regular" Opeth but it's also important to note they constantly evolve with each album. Plus the song writing is stellar on Heritage, it's just a great album.

You sir, are the first metalhead I've ever seen make the claim. They are anything but mediocre.
they've had a few good songs, fewer great ones, but overall I find their output to be pretty mediocre. Just a lot of long, drawn out songs that don't have much to them.
