If you're at or above 5k you should be hitting page 1 multiple times a day. Usually a 5k+ player won't be any higher than page 4-5 (although it happens once in a while). The 3.8k you saw was probably in a party, or he got really lucky and was in a big search range. My main ranked account right now is 5.1k, but I've also been playing another account that is 4.8 that started at around 4.2k. When it was 4.2 I don't think I was below page 10 more than a couple of times, and more in the 15-30 area.

So to answer the other guys question once you're at least 4.5k you will probably be hitting page 1 occasionally, and once you're 5k you will be hitting it consistently. You can hit it when lower but it's unlikely.

pudge wins the lane against sf if both players are equal in skill. not sure why youre making it out to look like sf has the advantage. if sf screws up his first block he will almost insta lose the lane. if he also fails to manage his creep equilibrium before the rune times he will lose his lane. as sf if you are caught out at the river or in the opponents side you will almost always die, unless youve already hit lvl 5 and can just 2 raze and right click pudge from full hp

You know, if RTZ says that SF crushes TA, i don't see a single reason why SF should lose to Pudge, even if they're even in skill.
There is very little amount of heroes who can stand against SF with bunch of souls and Pudge isn't one of them.

rtz is also one of the strongest mid players in the game. he can play sf and crush anyone
and if were going by "what pros said", then the pros saying pudge has an advantage over sf outweigh the pros who say sf wins
no shit if you leave sf to farm his souls youre going to lose. if you give him that time then you are bad because you dont understand the matchup. youre supposed to abuse the fact that he has shit damage and shit hp during the first 2-3 lvls. pudge is one of the few heroes that can punch on at lvl 2-3 and win against most heroes, let alone a sf

Game isn't over after 2-3 levels.
SF can comeback, Pudge can't.
That the difference. And Pudge to be useful will go roam, so SF will come back no matter what.
Even if he doesn't have the ward and overextend to lose early to Pudge.

who said anything about the later stages of the game? obviously sf is going to farm better and scale better if you cant control him. thats the whole point of the hero
we are talking about a 1v1 mid matchup (ie laning phase)

Even in just laning phase, if SF doesn't die or get totally zoned away until level 3, he should usually be ok. Pudge has a few really dangerous timings, but it's not like most ranged heroes with nukes that can basically throw 2 nukes at SF's face for 3/4 of his HP if they get a level advantage.

I'd actually compare it to SF vs. Bat (which consensus among high level Chinese play is that this is slightly SF favored) where a lucky rune or not respecting the early level kill timings can get SF killed and make him lose the lane, but if both players are very experienced and know the matchup well, SF should win because both Bat and Pudge can't play a harass/trading game and can only threaten kills.

It depends on a few things but after a certain point of skill when you're good enough with creep aggro and decent lasthitting if you just start with boots you'll never die to a pudge. You do only get one regen item but basically it ensures you don't die to a lucky hook and it negates any situation where you're out of position and pudge walks up to rot/autoattack.

90% people wont go boots first tho and you can really abuse the first 3 levels with pudge, playing agressively while faking out hook and making them move dumb then just hitting them with autoattacks+rot is great.

Personally I don't go boots first coz not good enough to abuse them but what I recommend is focusing on the block and then just staying near creeps. With a good block and at least 3 creeps alive pudge won't be able to trade effectively unless he hits a hook in melee range with 3 other units near you which is unlikely.
You must gather your party before venturing forth.

There are several vs. melee Bottle-Crow matchups that Pudge can control comfortably against heroes with significantly weaker level 1/2

I may be out of touch, but aren't melee mids totally out of style?
In pubs you see the odd Bloodseeker, Ember Spirit or Kunkka mid, but beyond that all other melee mids I see go mid as counters to Pudge, like Omniknight and Lifestealer.

How do you skill Nyx? Unless there is someone I want to mana burn a lot, I max impale first. Do you skill mana burn or carapace next? In what situations is one preferable to the other?

Seeing as there is no Nyx Assassin, Guide/thread on TL what should you be focusing on in team fights when playing this hero. After you burn your cds do you even attempt to right click or just try to bait carapace stuns?

i've been playing a lot of nyx games lately, here are my thoughts on the subject:

I'd say impale should nearly always be maxxed first, because its damage is higher early game and you don't have the mana to sustain repeated mana burn usage. Mana burn is also a scaling skill that most of the time will deal less damage early game compared to the already-low damage impale. I guess a few exceptions would be like solo mid matchups against int heroes (OD, tinker, skywrath mage...).

The choice between carapace and mana burn then really depends on how well you're doing with farm and what is your build. I'm rather fond of mana boots-blink dagger, which makes me go where the action is the thickest and the more dangerous, so i tend to get higher levels of carapace for the longer disable and shorter cooldown. If you go for a dagon-orientated build, you could argue about maxing mana burn first for increased damage and thus ganking potential. There are also arguments to be made against aoe channelers (cm, enigma) or heroes with aoe skills you really want to stun but are very mobile (batrider), in which cases i would advise for higher levels of carapace so they can be disabled longer/more often. For instance, a batrider diving to lasso your carry naga would be hard to stop with impale, but just blink-carapace into his fire and he gets stopped for 2,4 seconds - enough for your whole team to focus him and foil his initiation.

Bear in mind though i'm by no means a good nyx, let alone a good player; but i really like him and i've been playing him a lot lately and he's become one of my best winrate heroes so far. Take this with a grain of salt but don't dismiss it because i'm no pro =)

Depending on your role (support, offlane or mid core) and your levels/farm, i'd say first priority is to disable as many threats to your team with impales, then manaburn the intelligence-heavy or highly mana-dependent heroes (either to damage them a lot or to prevent them from using spells in fights). If you didn't initiate with vendetta+impale, use vendetta to kill anyone that stands in your path, or to escape a lost fight if the worst comes. try to use carapace on a high-damage spell, but don't save it too much, it's your main survivability skill...
When out of cds, either your team is doing the spell-throwing and you softly slap people with your mandibles (or whatever is it called), or you tank a little, then go back to avoid dying because you're nyx and you most likely didn't get any hp or armor items (if you did, what the hell, you're nyx: use carapace!)

Thanks.

The more I think about it, mana burn is for ganking/pickoffs, while carapace is for team fights. So level accordingly I guess.

Not rly.
Kunkka is safe pick on mid against everything, Ember is legit, there is always good old DK for midlane.
Tidehunter mid is decent in some situations, Beastmaster and so on.

Pudge is just absolutely non-lane dependant hero, so he's a bit different to other.

So I'm playing with a friend who's very new (<10 games) and I want to do a roaming game with them ie. both of us just roam from the beginning. I want to pick potm, so I'm wondering what easy heroes my friend could take to complement that. So far I've thought about VS or wraith king. Alchemist is ok I guess but a little more difficult. Things can go badly wrong with Bane. Another upside with wraith king is we can farm some camps in jungle during downtime between ganks. Any further suggestions?

So I apparently got caught into writing a Nyx Assassin "guide" from my measly experience, if only to have one started so that actual veterans can help improve it.

Do I have to send it to a mod once it is finished to have it checked or will I be able to post it as soon as I end it?
I'm following the hero guide skeleton on the Dota 2 Strategy Forum Guidelines thread and checking periodically if it looks good on preview but i'm still nervous on posting "my first thread"

Just post it in this "Dota 2 Strategy" subform with the name "[Hero] Nyx" and ur fine. Assuming there isn't already one.

E: a quick search indicates that the only nyx guide has been closed since it was literally just some guy pimping his video. Go ahead!

Enchantress/Chen are safe picks, there is no 800 apm requirements as some people think.
Gyrocopter is nice roamer as well if you have some lockdown.
Tidehunter, SK, Lich are other choices.

I don't know tho why you want to roam with him. Nice roaming is way harder than decent laning phase.
