I keep getting caught out and picked off really fast in team fights and I turn two for ones into three for ones for the enemy team. If I stay behind the team all the time it feels like I don't contribute much and I wind up pretty under leveled. I have a hard time telling what kills I can and can't make and how much damage I can tank.

I know that specifics matter but it feels like this happens regardless of what kind of hero I play. What can of map awareness tips exist for baddies like me?

get a routine you check:
for sc2 it was sth like:
top right (res and supply) -> middle (what am i doing/building -> bottom left (any movement/directing army)

for dota is almost the same:
bottom left (where are the others ppl / any1 missing? / other thigns to see)
middle (last hits / denies / pulling camps)
top middle (any1 close to respawn?)

its a bit like when you learn to drive, you have to get used to take a look into all the mirrors of your car. its natural after soome time.

positions in teamfights, it depends really on the heros. so it might be easier to tell you usefull stuff i we know the hero.
in generall, squishy heros like CM should stay behind their team as far as tehy can but still keep the range for all important spells (needs some practise ofc). use the terrain as well, high ground trees and such things can block the vision of the other team so you can spam your stuff from the dark.
forcestaffs or blink are also helpfull to get out of troublesome situations. forcestaff is the more beginner-friendly item since it wont be disabled when you take hero-dmg. also force gives you some str and int.
Ooooh, look at it go

Poisitioning is highly dependant on what you should be doing in a teamfight (hero, role). So first acknowladge that, then go to replays and watch teamfights on very slow speed. Examine what you should be doing and where you should position yourself. If you don't know what is right or what is wrong, get pub/cm replays and watch pro players how they do it.

Then when you go into a game constantly remind yourself of what you have learned and try to focus on positioning and improve it.

250 gpm is nothing.
It's pt/dagger 25 minutes and then only wards.
And you need sentries ALWAYS especially considering fact how popular are invis heroes nowdays, not speaking about warding properly and keeping map open.

the list goes on. pretty much every support hero is good even on their own. the only supports i can think of that might be bad on their own might be like, sd if you dont have a team comp that can make use of disruption.
its all about how you play the game though

Alchemist is useless as solo support, he needs levels and at least some items to be useful.

Basically if you're solo supporting, you need absolutely altruistic hero like Kotl/Dazzle. Even guys like AA won't work as solo support, especially if you're going to be fucked early.

Lina works better than Lion in that case, because Lion has ridiculous manacosts as well as Rhasta, CM is ok, Vengeful Spirit is most altruistic hero in whole game imo.
If you're ok with role of sacrificial lamb support you can go Venomancer, even Jakiro(THD) works.

? do you even know how to play alche support
the whole reason why hes picked is because he is insane at lvl 1 with a huge range long duration decent damage stun. on top of that he has acid which not only increases his stun damage, but can be used to defend pushes by taking creep aggro off tower as well. he does his job as a support through only his skills, but then his added bonus is that he can actually clear jungles and ancients better than any other support and with the help of greed he can get items out quickly too. so now you have 2/3 cores plus a 4/5 position alche who has similar farm to one of your cores anyway. thats the beauty of a support alche. get a early boots and medallion on him and you have a roaming machine that blows people up with a max charged stun. sure he cant babysit your carry, but the kill potential he brings to your team early game is incredible
kotl isnt gonna do shit to support on his own because he is a naturally shit babysitter. aside from specific laning combos that can make use of his chakra, he cant do crap unless he wants to risk pushing the wave out while harrassing with illuminate. he also cant roam, which means he provides 0 support to other lanes.
lina needs a set up skill usually, and his shit attack animation makes him a bad babysitter against decent offlaners because he cant fight 1v1.

If you have position 4 and position 5 and Alchemist is one of them, it's already not solo support, do you know it?
There are a lot of situations in pubs, where you have farming jungle like Doom, farm-dependant offlane like Timbersaw, of course, #1 carry. I doubt, kitty, that you will be able to farm at least something with Alchemist, who needs at least pt/dagger to be relevant.
Else you will just buy wards whole game, have your pt and dagger at 30 minute + if there is a position which was hurt by Alchemist hp-removal nerf on ultimate - it's support position.

Solo support is absolutely altruistic, you need to understand it. Solo support is just signing pact of having boots on 30 minutes and being ok with it. And Alchemist just suck in this position.
And you don't know i guess, how hard can be pain in the ass if Lina got few early levels.
Ah, and also. You can absolutely negate effect of illuminate just by denying creeps, that's all.

every game has a position 4/5, whether or not you like it. you can have a team of five carries, but someone is going to end up being the position 5. its just how farm distribution works in a game with limited resources.
and no, after the 6.78 (or 9 cant remember which) patch, which increased gold for all heroes, its not ok for a support be sitting on 30min boots only. if youre only capable of getting a boots at 30mins because you supported on your own, then that just shows how little you know about how to play the game. you make an argument for how lina can be hard to deal with if she gets some early levels, but then you say solo supports like alche cant get early lvls and so they suck. ????????????????????

I wonder in what level of competition are you playing.
Who will leave Alchemist support? It's absolute fresh meat for other team. Only thing that those 2 retards who sit on each other and whine about lack of shoes can do is throw stun for 180 damage on level 2 if they casted it properly. It's so hard to go duo offlane and just smash those carry+Alchemist who constantly pushes lane with acid and then single pulling for 5 minutes?
Then he hits ult, it becomes a bit harder to kill him ( he has fucking 1 armor and 5 base armor on level 19, about what are you speaking) but he's still fresh meat with his 900 hp if your mid can rotate his ass.

He can't counterplay you. It's not Abaddon, Visage or Dazzle, it's not even tier-2 support.
You pick him only when you push/stack minus armor/when you're Loda and you want to farm because you know that there won't be any duo offlanes.

I hadn't seen any mid-tier Alchemist games.
Either they go mid, get 10 minutes blink and then rape whole map whole game.
Either they feed, get 20 minutes vanguard, try to force some fights and still lose because you can stun him/doom/other stuff.

And about Lina. Lina has fucking 650 range, amazing attack animation and free oneshot on level 6.
What do you need else?

Well, since you are going mek (and thus overall utility) and doom has mana problems earlier in game arcanes do sound like a logical choice.

how to deal with a draw situation?
i just played a game that went for like 97 minutes. we got all three rax but and t4's but couldn't end the game. they had pl, medusa, warlock, dark seer and bounty hunter. we would lose every teamfight but they couldn't leave their base either. we eventually lost pushing trying to finish but i felt totally lost as to what you're supposed to do in that situation.

At a quick glance at the dotabuff for your match, you would have to end it much earlier. I'm not sure when you actually broke raxes etc (might watch the game later if I have time) but Medusa and PL are some of the best heroes to hold against mega creeps with, particularly when they start getting rapiers.

None of you have a Sheepstick, which is one of the best items in the game.

Why i have that strange feeling that plain 10 necrobooks + 5 refreshers (2 necros and refresher per player) would actually manage to finish the game? Just right click all 20 necrounits towards throne everytime megacreep wave goes highground.

And none of them has necrobook-refresher that is actually one of the best counters to stationary megacreep defense towers aka that pl and dusa.

What do you do when you're a melee mid playing vs a pudge and he just bum rushes you at the creeps? He has more HP than you so dancing around together in rot together doesn't help, and if you try make a break for it away from creeps he just hooks you and you're dead

What mid are you that apparently has no nukes? Also unless he's not right-clicking you he's going to draw creep aggro.

right now, i feel like lycan is a really strong pub hero. how do you deal with him? i know the standard advice is to gank.

ok, so we ganked, but we're still at equal ground..his movement speed in shape shift is still really good, and he still hits supports like a mac truck and he can push towers really well.

what do you do in the mid game to deal with him?

Lycan essentially relies on his team not losing 4v5 in the first 15 minutes. Heroes that can take advantage of this to take over the game and snowball can be unmanageable for Lycan if by the time he can start splitpushing, his team has zero control.

Technically you can if you get two necrobooks per hero. Use the first one, refresh, use the second one, and the first ones will remain present.
