The first step is obviously just being familiar with all the items/heroes/spells/basic mechanics of the game (which you're doing right now). Some of the less obvious stuff that you're gonna want to learn include more advanced ward positions, stacking/pulling creeps, teamfight positioning, drafting, etc. You'll naturally get better at laning, teamfighting, knowing the limits of each hero and stuff as you play more. You can always watch professional games and copy what they do (and if something they do doesn't make sense, well that's what this thread is for right?).

Also, just read every post that Yango writes and you'll probably learn a lot.

Is it viable to get mana boots with Tiny if you are safe lane farming?
I used to always build mana boots on tiny regardless if mid or safelane, but then someone way better told me to build treads by default in safe, sometimes phase depends on the game. He told me if i have trouble last hitting because the lane gets contested a lot i can get phase boots.
I played a couple of games with treads/phase but i liked mana boots better.
The advantage with mana boots is you can farm the big jungle camp with your combo and still have enough mana to have your combo ready, it is easier to gank or be safe from ganks because you always have enough mana for your stun.
If you go treads that is not always the case. I usually keep mana boots untill a big item after aghs, usually that is a bkb or ac, and sell them for treads.

both are viable
if you go treads buy a bottle and treadswap
i find with treads bottle wand i never really run out of mana on tiny, and i usually play him with blink

Mechanically speaking, DotA is a really easy game and best way to improve mechanically (knowing/getting the feel of turn rates, attack point, attack backswing, cast point, cast backswing, aoe, cast range, etc) is just to play a lot of games. As for strategy, I'd recommend watching casts of good teams playing (check out Beyondthesummit for instance) to get an idea of how a team can go about destroying the Throne.
As far as tactics and cute tricks go, you could watch streams of good players/watch replays of good players.

Technical one... can anyone (...Yango...) point me to a full list of stuff in WC3 that is softcoded/triggered, and thus should be different between Duel and Doom?

I'm thinking I'll go through and check Duel and Doom in Dota2 systematically. I've found enough weird interactions already that it's probably worth doing. Apparently Duel in WC3 uses ladder doom only, while Doom's ult uses ladder doom + extra coding to disable softcoded/triggered spells.

From what I've seen so far, they've actually been pretty faithful in replicating the WC3 behavior. Juxtapose and Kraken shell, for example, both work during Duel and not during Doom, which seems to be correct but unintuitive.

I recently started too, and have played about 200 games. My first bit of advice is to not take it too seriously, as although it requires skill you are also reliant on teammates, so to start with it's probably best to play around them and just have fun while you learn.

As for learning resources, watch a few pro games (team liquid calendar has them) to get a feel for the laning. Low level players lane like bots do, but if you think about it a lane has a finite amount of resources (xp and gold) so by putting more than one person in a lane you are just splitting the resources. So the first strategy I would look at is learning when and how you need to be in the lane in order for the other person there to get the most resources. If you are the person farming the lane then you can think about when is a good time to move around (from mid or offlane) to help others.

Later in the game the things to think about are getting farm whenever you have time, but only in a place that it is safe to do so. Always carry teleports and keep an eye on the minimap so that you can move asap to help allies.

As for a new player buying items I suggest just trying to fill in the weak spots of your hero/team, rather than trying to improve the strong points. Do you often think that team fights start badly for your team? if you have an aoe disable, buy a blink dagger so that you can start with that. Are you dying to magic spells? get a bkb. Etc.

It may be worth spending an hour playing with passive bots and learning to stack and pull jungle camps. Apart from that, it just takes time to learn all of the different abilities etc.

i am personally not a fan of building blink because it is an expensive item that doesn't add stats or damage.

however, i see a lot of people playing LC with blink. i want to get good with this hero, so i'm wondering if blink is necessary for her item build. could i feasibly go shadowblade for a little attack speed and sneak potential? i was experimenting with building her like a typical right click melee carry and was having good success until we were behind in a game.

my other question, are people laning with her maxing q and w first with a point in e at 4? or w and e with a point in q at 2? how was she built in dota1?

the blink is more to "snipe" low heros that try to escape.
with blink you get close and duel them to death, SB wont get you there fast enough.
SB would be more like sth to start teh fight while blink is sth to clean up the leftover.

yeah i get what its for, i just dont know how i like its functionality in pubs where there is little chemistry in terms of initiation. i suppose it can make me self sufficient and its obvious when im catching a retreating hero.

i just doubt a pub's ability to initiate WITH me.

EDIT: i've also seen a bunch of page-1 pubs with LC's building the shadowblade..so i was curious what TL thought

Most of the time you can right click>watch game of friends who are playing/watching another game. Is there a reason why sometimes the "watch game" option doesn't' appear or is this just dota being dumb?

The thing with LC is that she gets damage from winning duels, which in turn improves her passive and ability to win future duels. In that sense, blink dagger is buying you future damage by the ability to cherrypick targets to duel. I'm even starting to think she might be best played as a ganker starting jungle or mid getting bottle brown boots and dagger, carrying late game with all the bonus dmg she gets.

I've tried shadow blade but it doesn't have the same level of chase and initiation as blink. Delaying your potential for a bit of bonus dmg and worse mobility doesn't make sense in my eyes.
I think esports is pretty nice.

Private custom games, tournament games, game privacy features are on for them, or the game doesn't think you can connect to their server (lost connection to steam, dota network down, their game server's connection to the network being down, etc)

if you wanna know which is better, i'd say a blink is much better. Just the oppurtunity to initiate on someone without having to rely on SB's high cooldown, or them not having vision, or without them having some other blink ability to get away. SB at it's best can only follow people at a faster speed, but if they can force staff or blink dagger you can get easily outplayed.

Lothar's is fine out of lane. Blink-first builds don't have as much solo-kill potential, and with safelane freefarm, you can end up as the most farmed hero in game so your solo kill threat can be abused against many heroes.

Out of jungle, you pretty much have to go Blink first. It sucks when you get pubs that can't gank well with you, but the thing is, off jungle farm you simply aren't going to get to the point where you can pose a solo kill threat against anyone other than a support.

The advantage of LC jungle is that you can get Blink in ~7 minutes and start ganking and snowballing the game, which you HAVE to do with LC to win the game. With safe lane farm, you have a little more leeway, but with jungle, your comparatively low farm means you have to start doing things as fast as possible or you become irrelevant.

Q+W in lane, E+W in jungle.

Can anyone tell me how to exactly install the NBA announcer that Draskyl is using? I downloaded the zip file, but unsure how you install it. The readme file is pretty clear:

"Just extract this to the dota 2 beta folder (the one with dota.exe in it), overwriting any files"

but I don't want to fuck anything up. If I extract it, won't the entire dota map be replaced? Because all the files in the zip-file are located in a map called "dota". How does that work?

Also, I assume that I need to turn of my mega-kills announcer for it to work but can I still keep the other part of the announcer?

EDIT: just tried extracting it and nothing happened. It didn't ask me to replace any files but when I played vs bots it didn't change anything. The files where there but nothing worked. What am I doing wrong?

Another thing about blink vs. shadowblade that's worth noting is that with blink, you often have time to PtA yourself and nuke them before you blink in. It's much more difficult to get both of those out if you're initiating with shadowblade.

Personally I think the damage you get from your skills makes blink come out even in ganks. Not so much in teamfights where you don't need the element of surprise, of course.
