during diretide'12 i got the krob-announcer. yesterday i opened my wraith-present and go another krob-announcer. but than i saw that the diretide-one is called "elder announcer" but there seems to be no change in the lines and such between them. so why is it called "elder" than? just to prevent 2x items with the same name?

Isn't the "Elder" tag is a tag which was the "Vintage" tag? Elder/Vintage is a tag for an item that has been removed from the store nor droppable, but players that have owned it before it got erased will keep it and have the "Elder" tag item on it. As far as I know there's only one item that has the "Elder" tag, which is Void's Timebreaker.

the timebreaker is called vintage, and thats the only item with this label, thats right. thats why im confused about the elder-tag, havent seen that before.

Fed up with pubs, too many awful scrubs, too little coordination. Is there a way to clone yourself so this game might be enjoyable?

I just saw someone in D2L wants to trade both "Elder Announcer: Death Prophet" and "Elder Cruel DIretide HUD Skin". Perhaps.. this is it lads. This is the end of Diretide.

I assume they made elder versions of the stuff that drops in the welcome chests, otherwise those mythicals would have crashed to like $0.01 due to being owned by literally every person playing dota.
I would assume existing versions of the HUD, the boar, the announcer and maybe the ward all got elder-ified. Not so likely with the random commons.

the original items are worthless now, doesn't matter that they have a slightly different name. They will eventually drop to 0.01 at some point,

Any rhyme or reason to Rubicks spellsteal?
Just played a game where I literally tried to steal epicenter and necros sycthe, and I only got it once very early. Never got epicenter despite 15 + tries

With the exception of a certain few, you should never pick rubick to get "that big ulti", as people almost always will 1. be aiming at you and 2. use another spell right after to make sure you don't get it. Of course you should always try to get them, but as you've noticed with your 15+ tries, its not very easy. The spells you should be looking for are regular powerful spells that the enemy doesn't expect you to take or can be bothered to stop you taking. Try to get that flaming lasso, try to get pudge's hook, see that spell that Visage has that does infinite dmg? Take that one too! Vengeful's stun? Awesome, take it. Don't hold out on that "big spell" that either never comes or is too hard to catch, you'll just end up useless to your team if you do. Rubick is the hero that makes other heroes afraid to use their own spells.
That said, there are a couple of spells you are forced to wait for. Enigma's black hole for example. As long as you are alive and can't be caught with your teammates in one blackhole, he literally can't use it without you stealing it and turning it back around on him. Its worth being slightly less useful in teamfights if it means no black hole to instantly wipe your entire team.

It also depends on the hero. One of the biggest components in stealing the spells you want reliably is knowing the cast points of the heroes in question. Heroes with fast animations or 0-animation spells will be virtually impossible to steal from if the player is aware and uses a lower-value spell immediately after. Sand King and Necrolyte both fall in this category--Sand King is a 0-animation hero and Necrolyte's Death Pulse has no animation (Scythe does), so any competent player should be able to immediately cancel into their low-value spells after using their ult.
The heroes that are easiest to steal from are those with very long animations--many of these heroes also have high-value regular spells balanced around their long animations. Jakiro and Earthshaker are the best examples of this--with two high impact AoE stuns, balanced around the fact that they have 0.65 and 0.7 cast point respectively. Since Rubick uses his own animation rather than that of the hero stolen from, these spells are incredibly powerful with Rubick's 0.1 cast point.
Honestly in the case of Sand King, it's often going to be better to steal Burrowstrike anyway, as even getting Epicenter, it's unwieldy to use.

as for stealing epi, chances are you won't see him channeling it and he'll have burrowstrike'd after blinking in.

Is it viable to get mana boots with Tiny if you are safe lane farming? I used to always build mana boots on tiny regardless if mid or safelane, but then someone way better told me to build treads by default in safe, sometimes phase depends on the game. He told me if i have trouble last hitting because the lane gets contested a lot i can get phase boots. I played a couple of games with treads/phase but i liked mana boots better. The advantage with mana boots is you can farm the big jungle camp with your combo and still have enough mana to have your combo ready, it is easier to gank or be safe from ganks because you always have enough mana for your stun. If you go treads that is not always the case. I usually keep mana boots untill a big item after aghs, usually that is a bkb or ac, and sell them for treads.

When should i get the robes first vs the sobi masks first when going orchid on storm?

I solo-queue as well, and after I switched to playing just cm and cd, I've found that people communicate a lot more and make more of an effort to play as a team. There are still going to be trolls / scrubs though.

Mechanics-wise it steals the last spell the target hero cast... not when they pressed the button, but when the spell actually "cast" and goes on cooldown. An example is SF - Even though you can see that he's started to cast his ult, what with the windup and sound effects, you cannot actually steal the spell until after he's cast it.

I've just started playing a little while ago, (just played my 50th game tonight) and i have very little sense of what makes good strategy builds to use etc. I just pick the skills i find logical, focus on last hitting and staying alive, and buy the recommended items. Where do i go from here and what are good learning resources for me to use?

There is another passive slot on Rubick that never filled with spells the entire game, I had thought it would fill with a passive ability or something, do you need scepter to access it?
|
The extra slot is for when you steal certain skills that have sub-abilities aassociated with them. For example, SD's Shadow Poison unlocks the Shadow Poison Release sub-ability in the other slot.

That being said, that shouldn't make it hard to steal epi, you can steal it when he's channeling if you see him and he can't do shit about it ^^ if you're trying to steal epi the best thing to do is just not let him do it in the fog, though that's pretty easy to say and not as easy to do. But if you can see him, it's easy.
