Beginner here.

I'm trying to practice last hitting in bot-matches (or solo custom games) and sometimes with ranged heroes it feels that my projectile misses the creep?

Usually the scenario is something like:
- I rightclick a creep
- Wait until the projectile fires and starts flying
- Move before the projectile hits the creep *
- Projectile does nothing to creep. (no damage)

* It also seems that If I dont move between firing the projectile and waiting it to hit, it always lands (does damage.)

Is this just my imagination or is there some mechanic that i'm not aware of? I don't believe it is caused by lag, because it seems to happen even when i'm all alone (afaik creeps don't deny each other.)
Play random or die trying.

Moving has nothing to do with it.

Projectiles can miss when shooting up cliffs (mainly a problem for middle lane) or the creep could get killed milliseconds before your shot hits.
But unless you shoot uphill you will always hit a creep and most heroes unless they have evasion (brewmaster, phantom assassin, carrying a butterfly).

In general you never want to stand still unless your animation canceling (attacking a creep and pressing s repeatedly until it's low enough to kill in a single blow) and I'm not sure what I think about that either. Always moving randomly at least makes it a little harder for heroes to land skillshots on you.

I may be a little dense or dumb, but how the hell do I find/join guilds?

In this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=419092 there is a mention of finding a TL.net channel. But as my steam is in portuguese it is different. I can't find a "canal" or "channel" anywhere in dota (or steam community for that matter).

And I can't find a "guild" option anywhere either. Am I really that dumb?

From this page http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=154054221 it seems guilds are actually called "clãs" in Portuguese. But it only lets me create one. I can't look for one or anything...

TL:DR how the hell do I join TL guild?

Is there a way to prevent friendly spells from casting on you? or removing buffs?

Had a keeper of the light who go so butthurt over this Bounty hunter not helping him he started standing in the well and warping me back over and over (because i was well farmed and killing everyone).

Anyway to block this?

So... I'm thinking Midas on safelane carries is really hard to punish in pubs.

What's the actual window of opportunity? Let's say it's a PA or void or something and our lategame isn't as strong. If I see a battlefury going up I know I should try and get the team to gank them and push 5v4 before he gets rolling, but midas comes up so fast and gives such reliable income that I'm not really sure how to respond.

Few questions:
  • If you're playing a hard carry and you're getting shut down in your safe lane, either from your opponents, or because your teammate is making things difficult - what's the best option? Should you cut your losses, buy some items that will help you jungle and go there?
  • If I understand correctly, the hard carry is supposed to farm heavily, even if the middle of teamfights unless they are absolutely needed. In public games though usually one team will start to stomp the other in teamfights, so is it better to just proceed as planned (farm) and hope to carry, or should you join the teamfights?
  • How detrimental is it for a player if they are playing support (the 5 position let's say) and they are teleporting around trying to set up ganks, but it's not working out? For example, if I am a Lion and I am moving to top, bottom, mid lanes a lot trying to setup a stun and hex gank, but the ganks aren't working, I won't be getting any gold (which is fine for the most part), and I won't be getting any experience (can be problematic). Sometimes I roam, get a lot of kills and everything is fine, but I don't know if I should just cut my losses and continue to lane if my roaming doesn't work, or just keep trying.

So I still have no idea how to play, from what I've heard the matchmaking is pretty terrible and unbalanced, but for me I don't think that makes a difference. I'm still having trouble last hitting, not feeding, and everything, but I don't know who to choose and what lane to go, the basics of trilaning, or any strategies in dota. As a beginner, what's a good lane to start out with, what role is good to start out with, what are the basic heroes, item builds, and other things I should know about? I read all the beginner guides, like welcome to dota you suck, the transition guide from league to dota, and nothing's helping or answering where I should go, what to buy, etc.

Matchmakings fine. People who complain only notice the rare games where the skill levels are really skewed and ignore the the vast majority of games where it's even. There's also players who have an inaccurate perception of their own abilities, and bitch about getting matched with worse teammates when it's not the case.

With 100+ heroes in the game, people are bound to play different heroes at different levels of skill. Also consider that people very frequently play with friends a lot better or worse than them. It's pretty unrealistic to expect perfect matchmaking the way you would with a game like starcraft (where it's 1v1 and most players stick to one race). I made a second account a while back, and was shocked at how quickly it started matching me vs people of my skill level.

I learned Dota mostly by watching pro games. Obviously you don't want to copy pros 100% of the time, and a lot of things they do are irrelevant in low level pub games, but it'll still give you a general idea of what heroes lane where, and over time what items to buy in what situations.

Forum posts and featured streams can be good too.. One thing to be aware of is that lots of pros troll and do stupid things on their streamed games for entertainment, so be careful with how much you take away from those games.

it depends on your hero, but in most cases you want to go for your usual items. for example if youre medusa or spectre, you want to be going linkens/diffuse asap and would rather not make a pit stop and get drums in between etc. if youre antimage though, whos strength comes in accelerated farming speeds, dont keep pushing for a battlefury when its past 20mins already because you have already lost most of what makes you strong, so just get items that let you fight now.
if the teamfight is happening around towers or rosh then you almost always want to be there. even if you dont get kills the experience and potential assists are useful, and you being there or not could be the difference between defending/taking a tower or securing rosh etc. however, if you think nothing will come out of the teamfight in particular (no important objectives secured), farming is usually better, especially if you have a chance to solo a tower yourself. also pubs dont handle split pushing well, so despite losing 4v5 you can still splitpush your way to victory quite often.
dont roam all over the map to "look" for kills. thats how bad supports stay bad because they dont end up getting much xp/gold and they find themselves getting 2 shotted mid game. in other words, dont roam around the map to look for heroes to kill just because you can. time is a valuable resource in dota, and any time wasted walking across the map is bad for your development. usually you want to rotate between 2 lanes, mid and whichever side lane you started at/whichever lane has the highest priority target. hold a tp for cases where you need to travel from one side to another, almost never walk it. also, in between ganks make sure youre either pulling or stacking camps whenever possible for 1-3position heroes to clear, or hiding behind your teammates in anticipation of a gank so that you can save your teammate or counter gank, even if you have to stand there for a minute. leeching exp is vital as a support mid game. you pretty much never want to show yourself after the initial laning phase. also, as long as your ganks dont end up as a triple kill for their team every time, you never want to "cut your losses". the fear of ganks plays a huge part in how much risk the opposing team can take, such as when farming far away from towers etc. which is why its so important to stay hidden at all times when youre a support

My mere opinions:
First one is one of my challenges, also. There is a reason for being shut down(playing worse then opponent, retarded mates, bad picks etc..) and it is very hard to overcome by just yourself. I think there is no solution to the cases that forces you to change your item build after 15 min. Just pray for the opponent to do dumb mistakes and comeback. Best option i think , do not press the same style you played and look for different things like 5 manning, blind jungle or changing the lane etc..

Most of the time team fights are good opportunities for you to farm and push hard. Unless you think you have an impact in the fights, I suggest you to participate but it depends you hero and your team. Both skill level of your mates and your hero tells the story. BF-treads AM shouldn't be in team fights ideally but a treads/diffusal spectre should participate after the first set of spells are used. Most of the time your team shouldn't be in need of your participation and can deal 4v4 or 4v5 with tower support.

I don't use teleport that much as a roaming support since you don't have that much gold in any point in the game and losing 135 gold(lets say gank failed) is about to have a set of wards for your team. Walking to mid is better since you wouldn't gain too much gold from last hitting. And it is okish to sacrifice some xp/gold comes from jungling. With new patch, it is worth more to gank. Ganks let you win mid lane even if kills are not secured.
A big 'unless' is, considering your carry farms well without being harassed too much. Sometimes it becomes very hard to farm in pubs because of the picks and lack of trilane. At this case stick with the caryy no matter what.
