What are the "best" carries to play and why by the way?

I realize that having aoe damage and a built-in escape mechanism is a good thing, but what else? Are carries primarily agility-based, like in LoL with AD carries?

I see carry tags on almost 1/3 of the champs I play vs, I have no idea what good they are.

He's really weak at low levels, most of the heroes he combos best with are really awkward to draft with him, and he's quite poor in lane. Someone like Nyx has a much more rounded kit, even though there are scenarios where Tusk does better.

Tusk IS really good against low-mobility melees lategame (e.g. Naix) because Walrus Punch, Ice Shards, and Frozen Sigil are all decent for fighting against them (Frozen Sigil's slow is ridiculously powerful, you just have to be able to keep it alive), it's just generally pretty troublesome to find a draft that would make him work.

Since Dota-heroes usually tend to fill more than one role, there is no "best carry" per se. If we are speaking about public games, heroes that can have an impact early in the game usually dominate. Good examples are Phantom Lancer, Naix, Sven or Obsidian Destroyer. As you already see, carries are not always agility, allthough the hardest ones usually are. Dota has a lot of heroes that can somewhat "semi carri", thats why a lot of them are labeled as carries, allthough its not their primary role. For example Windrunner and Lina can be played as supports but can also carry quite decent. Hero roles are much more flexible in Dota than in LoL.
There are only a few "hardcarry only" heroes i can think of: Antimage, Medusa and maybe Faceless Void.

There is no "best", but there are carries that are currently more viable than others.

Lifestealer is very strong because his rage skill is a built in bkb, his infest lets him initiate with a teammate and he is quite a good laner(feast lvl 1 is pretty strong)

Gyrocopter is strong because his flak cannon lets him attack everyone in 1000 radius lategame. His early game is quite strong with rocket barrage and calldown being really strong in early fights.

Alchemist is on the way of becoming one of the most picked carries because his ultimate gives him the lowest Base Attack Time the game has ever seen, a ton of regen and more max hp. His unstable concoction is at 4 seconds one of the longest stuns in the game giving him plenty of killpower. He does have weaknesses, but luckily he can alternately be played as a support.

Weaver is another carry that's relevant because he has very good mobility and is ranged, which is already enough killpower. In short, its just very hard to catch him ever, while it is relatively easy for him to catch other heroesyou.

Those should be the most common carries right now.
Honorary mention for Lone Druid. He has incredibly good everything because of his tanky bear unit. It dies when he dies, but he gets a lot of hp from his ult, too. He is regularly banned or picked in Alliance games because Admirabulldog is quite the notorious druid player.

The best carry really depends on the teams in play. Some carries have aoe, some are really good single target, some are good early game, some are good mid game, some just dominate late game, some farm fast, some can gank pretty well, some are tanky, some are mobile, some push really well, some have huge teamfight ultimates, some can solo, and some can even dominate their solo lane. There are too many factors to have only a handful of best carries. Sure a Medusa and Faceless Void are probably some of the hardest carries, but their viability is questionable (not so much Void...but still he isn't picked that much)

I think if you don't have your hero picked, you won't get an abandon, but I'm not even sure if that's intentional right now.

Thanks, I think I'm either going to do that when someone makes an idiotic pick or I'm just going to give up on non-5 stacked Dota.

Was pretty confused by something during a game today. Just want to check, does Tidehunter's Kraken Shell remove Fiend's Grip from itself once the damage threshold is met?

I didn't think of fiend's grip as a buff... so I was confused why he seemed to be able to shrug it off (I was casting it from a Rubick via spell steal, though don't think that matters.)

edit: Thanks for reply below, didn't know that.

Kraken Shell removes any debuff except Doom including stuns and channeled disables like Fiend's Grip and Dismember.

you can leave after picking and it still doesnt give an abandon. the system is retarded and many ppl abuse it. of course if you report those people all is good.

I've never understood how this actually works, though. Is it before game timer or creep spawn or leaving the base or what?

I often wonder which leavers actually get punished for it and which ones need to be reported...

Are there many pros or high level players who never played the original DotA on WC3 engine?

I guess the follow-up question would be did they have HoN/LoL experience as well.

edit: I guess I should say I'm interested if there are any well-known players who played DotA 2 as their first ever MOBA (flame-shield on) type game.

Many top level players came from dota1, especially the chinese and eastern european teams. a good number of very high skill players came from HoN, but I don't think there are any notable players who came from LoL unless im mistaken.

I think most of the high skill players who came from HoN also had played DotA 1 before that. Fnatic is a team that most if not all of their players played competetive HoN but I know for sure at least n0tail and h4nn1 played DotA 1.

What matters more is which game the players played to get to a high/competitive level. Players like s4 did so on HoN. No doubt he probably had a little experience with Dota before, but it's not even worth mentioning. There's a handful of players who went competitive on HoN and then eventually got there on Dota 2 aswell, I'm just not sure if they were high level on Dota.

Is there a list of heroes categorized in earlygame, midgame and lategame heroes?

(obviously most carries would be lategame and most support earlygame, but there are carries who can fight midgame and carries who really should wait for lategame. Naga and Alchemist are even played as support and carry.)
